It just occurred to me - should we make this a list of species of the genus Boletus or all Boletes (i.e. Boletaceae or Boletales............) Cas Liber 10:33, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm all for turning this into a list of Boletales. While the list will inevitably become bulky and will need regular taxonomic updating, I feel this is the best solution to avoid ommission of species all belonging to several genera and even families all at once in their synonymy, such as Gyroporus castaneus, Gyrodon lividus, and Buchwaldoboletus lignicola.--Paffka (talk) 19:03, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm of the opposite opinion: Boletus alone has over 300 species, and I think is evidently size-worthy of its own list. The 9th ed of Dictionary of the Fungi (now 8 years old) says 1025 species in the Boletales. How about instead I start genus-level articles for all the Boletales genera that are currently missing, and then add species lists to each of them (or split off individual "List of .... species" when numbers warrant it)? That is also all right, but I don't know how we'll get over the problem of species belonging to several genera and shifting taxonomic opinion. It's not as easy as separating Lactarius from Russula. My guide is generally Index Fungorum in determining current classification and species independence, the only regret being the lack of confirmation for many taxons local to North America and other continents.--Paffka (talk) 13:25, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
