The Solution RS Noticeboard

[RELIABLE SOURCE NOTICEBOARD]--Inayity (talk) 08:26, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Ref poor quality

Ref to YouTube are not allowed.--Inayity (talk) 13:10, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

They are if considered reliable enough for the claims they refer. And an interview posted by the owner of the channel seems perfectly reliable. Sportfan5000 (talk) 15:21, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
Can you please show me where YouTube is considered a RS for a living persons bio? WP:BLPSOURCES And please do not in your haste delete tags which say this article does not have sufficient quality ref.WP:NOYTAnd prior to reverting, you see a talk page discussion join that first.--Inayity (talk) 15:58, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
I have told you already in the above why they are not. You do not say something is RS and re-add it when I have just said they are not. If they are reliable sources please clear it with the . [Reliable Source noticeboard]--Inayity (talk) 05:44, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

The subject of this article is a YouTube blogger, some of the sources are also on social media and are perfectly acceptable for what they are sourcing. Youtube can be an acceptable source, especially if the person who controls the channel is posting the videos themselves. Likewise all the other sources are used in that manner and support the facts being stated. Is there any one in particular you doubt? Let me know and I'll try to explain it, as maybe we need to make it more clear what these sources are or what lams they are sourcing. Sportfan5000 (talk) 07:51, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

My first problem is when I tag and article and take issue with a YouTube as a RS, I do not expect you to tell me "They are RS" and revert. That is not how it works. I have given you specifics links to Wikipedia criteria esp on a BLP, yet I have not seen you provide sufficient refutation. I am engaging the talk page to establish Reliability and quality of this persons Bio. I am following procedure. Why not just verify on the RS noticeboard that they can be used or show me in the wiki policy that YouTube is RS in this instance. So disruptive is failing to sort out a dispute on the talk page but deleting tags. WP:DETAG And apart from your opinion, i see no back up for your activity.--Inayity (talk) 07:57, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
You started this all off with a false statement that sourcing to YouTube is not allowed. That's simply not true. And there is no BLP issues here as we are not making any negative claims against this person. What BLP offense do you see that I'm missing? I'll start a new section regarding the sources you keep deleting. Sportfan5000 (talk) 08:10, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Can you show me a person who has a Grade a page that is using YouTube? What part of the issue am I missing. YouTube is not an RS! That is the start and end of it. Stop your edit war and learn to use the talk page. Makes no difference the point is I rather have no ref than a YouTube ref. --Inayity (talk) 08:19, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Actually you dispute the YouTube can be a reliable source but even Wikipedia pages on the subject say that it can be. The main concerns seem to be if the video is altered or a copyright infringement. Neither of this scenarios are present here. Sportfan5000 (talk) 10:28, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Notable people do not need YouTube as a RS

The problem with self-published videos as RS then it begs the question How come you cannot find something outside of YouTube to verify these things? Now fortunately I am actually a Fan of Brownlee. But in the interest of quality ref to a living person bio need a higher threshold of inclusion. As this is the Wikipedia policy not my opinion. Other Youtubers and Bloggers are NOT using YouTube as a RS. Alex Day, and Alex Jones. --Inayity (talk) 08:12, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

These sources are all being used within acceptable limits of WP:Reliable sources. As i have stated i will start a section devoted just to them so you, and everyone else, can see the reasons fro their use. Sportfan5000 (talk) 08:14, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
You are talking in circles, Can you please refer me to Wikipedia Policy where it says YouTube is allowed on a BLP? It is as simple as that. Or can you do a RS noticeboard post that others verify that you are correct. The bases of your argument is Your Opinion. My argument is based on the very link you post to RS. YouTube is not included. It is not used by any notable person on Wikipedia.--Inayity (talk) 08:21, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
This is being addresses at the reliable sources noticeboard post you started. Sportfan5000 (talk) 08:58, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
The worry is anyone can come here and ask for this article to be deleted. Per WP:NN. There is nothing in Wikipedia that mentions his name i.e. Orphan. And that is a problem. --Inayity (talk) 11:20, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Disputed sources

1. Interview with Marques Brownlee!. As the title suggests this is an interview with Brownlee conducted by Martin Shervington, and posted to Shervington channel. This 30-minute interview unsurprisingly covers a lot of ground, and is used as a general source as they do confirm many basic points that article raises, and they also noted about Browlee that Vic Gundotra, Senior Vice President of Google Social, calls him the "best technology reviewer on the planet right now." This source, among others was removed and a "citation needed" flag was added in its place.

The source also confirms the statements; He currently is a marketing student at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is majoring in business and technology, while minoring in Information systems, and marketing. And Other than producing content and school, he plays golf, and is a former professional ultimate frisbee player with the New Jersey Hammerheads. And His first several hundred videos were primarily hardware tutorials, and freeware. And He was later approached by companies to demonstrate their paid software and hardware, but only reviews products that would be of interest to his audience of technology enthusiasts.

2. The statement "The channel is said to be one of the fastest growing channels and one of the most subscribed-to in the technology industry." was also removed, this too can be attributed to the first source and I will accept it was an error not to have it with a source. The same user who deleted several sources then added a "citation needed" flag, didn't flag this statement but just removed it.

3. Management team – Company – Google. Is the website of Google management confirming that Vic Gundotra is indeed who we say he is, the Senior Vice President of Google Social. This was the second of three sources removed and replaced with one "citation needed" flag.

4. Vic Gundotra - Google+ - New MKBHD Video is live! I spend a lot of time in thought…. Is Vic Gundotra's own post confirming that what we said he said is accurate and verifiable. This was the third of three sources removed and replaced with one "citation needed" flag.

5. Pocketnow VIP, episode 3: meet Marques Brownlee from MKBHD! | Pocketnow. This is another online interview with Browlee that confirms a lot of basic, non-exceptional information in the article. It was removed as a source for the statement: He is majoring in business and technology, while minoring in Information systems, and marketing.

6. G Flex Self Healing Demo. This is one of Browlee's hundreds of videos, and the only one that is presently mentioned in the article, about someone who is notable for making YouTube videos. It is a demo of a particular product and is used to source " As of Dec 2013, the video has over 3,032,947 views." This source was also removed and replaced by a "citation needed" flag.

All in all these are not questionable sources and I think they fairly support the claims they are referencing. I think it would be nice to have more sources but this is also a new article, a short article, and until these sources were removed, most of the exceptional statements were easily verifiable. I think it can all be restored and I don't see any BLP violations as has been suggested but maybe someone can make it more clear what they are. Sportfan5000 (talk) 08:40, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Please read WP:RELIABLE and reply to that criteria. Feel free to show me where YouTube is mentioned as usable as a RS for a notable person's BLP? It is really that simple. --Inayity (talk) 08:53, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
I think WP:YOUTUBE, and Wikipedia:Video links covers it just fine. It's understandable to be cautious against using online videos as they can be a copyright violation, if the poster doesn't have the rights to post the video, and are often not appropriate for external links, which is not how they are being used here. We have three online videos all being posted by the people who control the channels. I think we are well within acceptable use here. Sportfan5000 (talk) 09:02, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
By having substantial YouTube videos you are undermining Notability. I think that is what we got from the Quest contributions. I would suggest a min usage of YouTube and you have to go and find 3rd party and other independent sources. It is not what You and I believe, as stated I am a fan. But to make this page quality we cannot have YouTube as the main ref to his notability. We need independent sources. And not blogs or forums. See remarks--Inayity (talk) 09:18, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
I think you really need to step back a bit. YouTube is not the newspaper or reporter serving up this information. It is simply the main houser of video producers, an industry standard. Your blanket refusal that anything in video form is unreliable, or at least not reliable on a BLP is simply false. Sometimes, and i think expressly in this case, those videos can be used. And wether the main sources are print, video, or books does not matter at all. That's a systematic bias favoring books as better than magazines, better than newspapers, etc. Instead we should look at each source to see if it is reliable for the claims made. At the interviews with Brownlee are used minimally and with care. This is a new, and very short article. These sources are fine for what they support. The premise that all video sources are false is simply wrong. Sportfan5000 (talk) 10:34, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
This issue has already been answered by other editors.--Inayity (talk) 10:42, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Then you are fine that these uses constitute acceptable uses for primary and secondary sources per Wikipedia:Video links? Sportfan5000 (talk) 10:43, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
No, because if these events are so notable that they deserve a wikipedia page then you should have no trouble finding non-YouTube video ref for the bulk of the article. I will accept 1 or 2 YouTube but YouTube should not be the majority by a long shot, no matter how short or long the article is. --Inayity (talk) 10:51, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Actually you don't control what content and sources are allowed or not. But to steep things in your take, we use exactly one Self-published Video from Brownlee and it only reports how many times that video shows it's been played. All the other video sources are independent of Brownlee and are talking about him or interviewing him. I did find other sources and might add some of those as well. Sportfan5000 (talk) 10:57, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Oh yes I do, because I am an editor on Wikipedia and I did not just join 1 year ago. So you need to get agreement here for edits there on the article. If you cannot find independent sources then the notability of the subject should not be included, at the risk of this page being deleted. If you are unclear about this go back to the editors who have already made this clear. --Inayity (talk) 11:01, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

No, anyone can edit any article and even after filling up this page and making me spend an enormous time answering your claims on a noticeboard there is no good reason not to restore everything as it was. You even just now deleted a reliable source that the article needs for an exceptional claim. If you insist on the more references needed then that's your issue. If we need to have more people look at this then we certainly can do so. Sportfan5000 (talk) 11:09, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

I would suggest putting energy into making this article better by providing quality references that work (as opposed to dead links) sourcing solid external sources and formatting them properly. This is why we are here to make it better not to just promote a YouTube Channel. --Inayity (talk) 11:17, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
I wasn't aware there were any dead links, I'll look to finding where the underlying pages have moved to, and get the alive again. That little jibe about here just to promote a YouTube channel isn't helpful, I've done nothing but try to improve the article as the history shows. Sportfan5000 (talk) 11:21, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Good, now let us improve it more. Because I cannot be accused of making it worse by asking we do some more work to find non-YouTube 3rd party sources. After all when we add better ref is it hurting him? It means no one can pass and make the remarks I just made. I am actually trying to help him by making his page solid. Removing dead links and bad ref that do not help. Where is his Facebook page? Where is his Twitter account, focus on these things. We do not need anymore YouTube. add the other good ref where applicable. --Inayity (talk) 11:25, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
I think you might have missed an important point in all this sometimes YouTube and video sources are perfectly acceptable, as blogs can sometimes be. It depends on who controls the content of them. There is no quote for how many video sources we use here and all we should focus on is getting the best sources possible. I'm sure Wired or someone will do a story all about him but he's a young guy so what we have in the article might be it for a while. Sportfan5000 (talk) 11:44, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Re-read the comments, [1 and 2. --Inayity (talk) 11:48, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
"But generally articles should use secondary sources." This is what I'm trying to do. You seem to think all video sources are controlled by him but they are not. And by extension you are implying that I am doing original research to make claims which are untrue. Can you point to anything in the article that is untrue? That Brownlee stated about himself that someone else disputes, or you do? Have you watched, listened to the interviews? It's fairly obvious it isn't investigative journalism but then we have no reason to believe Brownlee deserves hardball treatment. I feel you are rejecting sources without really measuring them up for how we are using them. Sportfan5000 (talk) 12:15, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Independent is not a video interview with your mates

Have a look at a 3rd party independent source Alex jones I suggest you find these to establish notability. In Books, in popular places other than buddy buddy interviews. It is just not serious. --Inayity (talk) 12:22, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Primary sources can still be reliable sources. WP:USINGPRIMARY If Brownlee is asked a question and he answers it about himself, I expect him to be the best authority on himself. What was his motivation, when did he start, what sports he likes, etc. Accusing him of doing interviews with just his friends is completely dismissive unless you have evidence that this is true. And the same would hold true if he was in a print article or book. He could be friends with the author but what do we know? He could actually be a nice person who no one despises publicly. Sportfan5000 (talk) 12:40, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
If he is talking about himself then it is not independent! If someone who does not know him, is writing about his work as in the link i gave you then that is 3rd party. Surely important people are discussed outside of their opinion of themselves. As for what we know? We know he has no independent RS. Or should anyone with a Following, or a Facebook page now have a Wiki-page? --Inayity (talk) 16:20, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
If a person is being interviewed suddenly the source is not independent. I think you may have to rethink that as news media interview people a lot! Sportfan5000 (talk) 09:45, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

How Many Fans do you need on YouTube to get a Wikipedia page?

I begged that we bring this article up to speed. My actions were not seen by all as helpful. Someone is now issuing warnings on my talk page to leave this page alone. What I wanted to avoid was the tag that this page should be deleted. The way I was trying to avoid this page EVER being deleted was to get rid of the self-published YouTube (be serious now) references and get some solid content up there. As oppose to do that MORE YouTube ref were added prompting a question of Notability. The issue is clear, and I will frame it in a question. How Many Fans do you need on YouTube to get a Wikipedia page?--Inayity (talk) 10:57, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Link to non-notable link not reliable

only links from his page are allowed or verifiable independent links. you were told this already by other editors. --Inayity (talk) 00:29, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

You are again mistaken. YouTube links are perfectly acceptable as long as they are controlled by whoever owns the YouTube channel, and there are no copyright concerns. And there are no copyright concerns at all, it's an interview withe brow lee who is interviewed about his work. And despite your allegations the is zero evidence the Brownlee controls this person who shows every sign of being independent of him. Sportfan5000 (talk) 09:44, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
You could have just left it alone as it was, adding these YouTube ref hurt the articles notability. WP:INDEPENDENT(Maybe Wikipedia is mistaken in its definition).--Inayity (talk) 11:03, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

External links are missing

They should be added. As one or two references can't be used as refs, but external links. Bladesmulti (talk) 13:06, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Middle name Some speculation has existed for what the "K" in MKBHD stands for. Many names have been suggested including, more recently by the Youtuber Tquo,[1] Kumar. However, Brownlee has since denied that his middle name is Kumar.[2] Brownlee's mother has registered for Twitter saying his middle name was Kramblebamble. Which was obviously a joke, if you google Marques Brownlee's name it will show you a short description, such as when and where he was born, filiation and education. If we search for Marques dad's name (Marlon K. Brownlee), we can see Kumar as his middle name, which was also his father's name (Milton Kumar Brownlee), so we conclude that Marques inherited his father's middle name, which inherited from his father. So K is confirmed as Kumar.[citation needed]

Swap brand identity/logo for portrait photo

It may be more beneficial for article readers to see Marques Brownlee's portrait instead of his brand identity/logo.

There is a high-resolution portrait of him available via his official Web site, which Wikipedia can use under fair-use clause: http://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/47391746/Portrait.0.0.jpg

As the article is currently semi-protected until Feb. 2017, I am unable apply this article update myself. What do you folks think of this recommendation? Does it make sense to replace the brand identity/logo with a portrait photo? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zeeshan m (talkcontribs) 04:09, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

I agree a photo of him would be nicer, but according to WP:NFC#UUI, non-free photos of living persons are not acceptable as a replacement for a freely-licensed photo which could be acquired. I'd suggest you to contact him and ask him to release a photo under a free license. This guide may be useful to do that, and these examples may prove helpful as well. His tweet said that the initials and middle names were the same, not necessarily the first name. Is there any way to add an image? Niyazali Haneef (talk) 09:09, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Marques Keith Brownlee (incorrect?)

Hey Everyone, The wikipedia for MKBHD says Marques Keith Brownlee, i just deleted that line because as we see in this video Keith is not his middle name.

Thanks, Smiley .521 (talk) 12:41, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

@Smiley .521: Marques claimed that his middle name is Keith on twitter. In this case, twitter is allowed as per WP:SELFSOURCE. You will need to provide a reliable source which contradicts this claim in order for it to be removed. Terasail[✉] 14:27, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Not done, It does say 11/3/1993. The perceived "1" is just an over-sized slash. Thanks, EDG 543 (message me) 20:03, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

On Oct 16, 2015 MKBHD uploaded a video named "iPhone 6s #Chipgate:Explained!". In that video the information provided is totally wrong. Brownlee says that bigger chips provide better performance. Instead, as we know the smaller the chips the better the performance. Sg54sg (talk) 15:49, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

I would like to update the outdated picture and use a more recent picture from when he was not a child. 162.247.87.12 (talk) 03:18, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. The existing picture is from when he was 21. That's not "a child". And what image do you want to use instead? We can't just use an image copied from the web. Do we have a more recent, good quality free image uploaded? Meters (talk) 04:54, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Photo

Ok, that photo is TERRIBLE. It's very low quality. Someone needs to change it. Pineappman (talk), 1:37, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

I agree that the photo is absolutely horrendous, but there are literally no other copyright-free images of him. I get that the point of having a photo isn't to look good, and you're generally supposed to use an image if one is available, but it my eyes it's so bad that it detracts from the quality of the article. I personally liked it better when there was no image of all. Saucy[talkcontribs] 07:40, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
The image definitely needs to be removed. It's low quality, 7 years old, and Brownlee is making an unsettling expression in it. It is too distracting from the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ComplainingCamel (talkcontribs) 09:24, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
It's the only free image we have. Don't remove it unless it can be replaced with a superior free image. Meters (talk) 08:09, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
@ComplainingCamel: I've emailed Marques asking if he's willing to license a new photo for this page. Hopefully he responds... Saucy[talkcontribs] 08:12, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
Everyone, sorry for the changes I've been making with the photo and middle name. I'm gonna keep them as they are now. ComplainingCamel (talk) 17:20, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
@ComplainingCamel: Don't worry about it. Anyway, mission accomplished; there's a new photo now! Saucy[talkcontribs] 07:44, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request: NY Empire also won AUDL Championship in 2022

In reference to the sentence "Brownlee is a professional ultimate frisbee player for the New York Empire (AUDL), who were the 2019 AUDL champions." If the sentence is going to list the New York Empire as the 2019 AUDL champions, it should be updated to include the Empire's 2022 championship: "Brownlee is a professional ultimate frisbee player for the New York Empire (AUDL), who were the 2019 and 2022 AUDL champions." Otherwise remove reference to the championships, but, as it is a national championship, I would recommend including the update, as this seems fairly self-evidently relevant to a biographical page. (Source for 2022 championship: https://theaudl.com/league/tuesday-toss/2022-audl-championship-weekend-recap-new-york-empire-perfect-season) (numerous other sources available upon request, including the broadcast of the entire championship game on Youtube) 24.151.103.37 (talk) 04:11, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
