Discrepancy?

The article says Mayinga was the index case, but the photo caption states she was the third case. Can someone clarify?StvnLunsford 13:59, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"The index case is the patient in whom the disease first indicated the existence of an outbreak. The index patient always remains the same person irrespective of whether earlier cases are discovered later. The very first case is called the primary case, not the index case. Later secondary, tertiary, etc. cases can follow." -THB 14:21, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The article sounds rather more like an obituary than a Wikipedia article !, is there somewhere we can source information about nurse Mayinga to improve the article? Bobbyshabangu talk 19:42, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There are several books about the Ebola outbreak which reference her case and have conflicting information. Two I'm familiar with are The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston, and Virus X by Frank Ryan. Preston identifies her as the index case, but Ryan mentions an earlier case of a schoolteacher from Yambuku, the village where the outbreak began, as the index case. They agree on many details, and I'm hoping to go through and add citations when I have some time this week. Any thoughts on resolving the index case questions in the case of conflicting sources? --Rachelwalexander (talk) 15:33, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Did some research and found multiple sources identifying the index case as a schoolteacher from Yambuku, where the outbreak began (including, notably, the WHO report). I've edited the article to reflect that, added some citations and done some other cleanup on this page and the Yambuku page it links to. If anyone has further suggestions for improvement, I'd love to hear them. --Rachelwalexander (talk) 19:25, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
