Epidemiological studies of toxicity outbreaks in Indian village children[edit]
An interesting study was just published in Lancet regarding illness and deaths in Indian village children linking harvest-time consumption of many litchi nut fruits and lack of an evening meal to fatal sequelae. Methylenecyclopropylglycine[edit]
@Wuerzele:: I'm an organic chemist, but I'm not familiar with methylenecyclopropylglycine and its appearance in lychees. Still I'm puzzled why this compound is listed as the dangerous substance in lychee seeds. It seems that the article conflates methylenecyclopropylglycine with methylene cyclopropyl acetic acid, yet they are completely different compounds. I was directed to this article from Lychee by clicking on the word methylenecyclopropylglycine but the blue link there led me instead to this compound - not even via a redirect. Also, the overview of this article begins: "Methylene cyclopropyl acetic acid (MCPA) is a compound found in lychee (Litchi chinensis) seeds, and it then cites Reference 1, yet nowhere in reference 1 is there any mention of MCPA. I can believe that MCPA might be a metabolite of MCPG, but ref. 1 clearly states that MCPG is the compound present. It seems to me that we need a separate article on MCPG, and then we can move many of the content to that page if that is more appropriate. Also, if MCPA is a metabolite, then it would be good to explain that, and to show the pathway from MCPG to MCPA. What do you think? Thanks, Walkerma (talk) 04:40, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
