Pictures

Although the length and content of this article itself is dismissable, the photos on the page are also quite unpleasing to the eye. For example, some of them are blurry, the subject is covered in haze, and the skies are brown. I myself do not live in Delhi, and cannot take new pictures. However, if we can all try to improve the pictures it will make a big difference. Also, in addition to the map in the city infobox on the page, we can have some picture of New Delhi, or some seal or emblem or something. For example, if you look at the Taipei page it has a picture of a famous landmark, along with the seal, etc. of Taipei. -Vamooom 20:21, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Copyvios

It seems that some copyvios are being made inadvertently by user:Nikkul. He added the text: "Delhi is a cosmopolitan city due to the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural presence of the vast Indian bureaucracy and political system, and expanding economy. Crime

I believe the high crime rate of the city, in particular sex crimes, is worth a mention once the article is expanded.

Scope of this article

Placement of map

Page appearance before the edit.
Page appearance after the edit. Note that the page text begins far below the images, and that the "New" from "New Delhi" is separated from the rest of the text.

A recent edit has moved an image in such a way as to disrupt the flow of the page at 800x600. What was the reason for moving it up? --Doradus (talk) 17:53, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

The reason for moving it up was to keep it from overflowing into the other section. Keep in mind that your view is large text and that it differs from the way most computers view the page. Change NCT to Delhi

"NCT" is not nearly as widely known as "Delhi", and the latter causes no ambiguities I'm aware of. In fact, National Capital Territory of Delhi is nothing but a redirect to Delhi. Article improvements

If you think that the article is missing something, why not try to improve the article rather than ranting how bad it is. Also, not all cities have an HDI value. Here are some major cities that don't have an HDI value: New York City, Paris, London, Tokyo, and Cairo. Languages

Hindi is the official language of Delhi. Both Punjabi and Urdu are second official languages of Delhi. That's why there are three languages listed in the introduction. Yes, english does not enjoy the primary status even though we hightech gurus think that way! I just replaced english from the primary spot with hindi. I don't think there is any city in INDIA that has a english in the primary state. capital of India

I could not find a provision in the constitution or a law nor a presidental decree making New Delhi the capital. As I see it, the capital is Delhi and all supreme institutions of the republic (president, parlament, prime minster, supreme court) happen to be in New Delhi, which is just a central part of Delhi.

Sorry, but your supposition is incorrect. New Delhi is the capital of India, as you can verify from any number of sources (example, [1], [2]). While it would be interesting to figure out which act of the parliament, or administrative action, made it the capital, such questions are best asked at wikipedia's reference desk. The other side of Delhi - New Delhi Railway Station - street children

i wonder if the section is about New Delhi or poverty of Bhihar and UP. When people of Bhihar and UP are not concerned of their children then how should they expect that people of Delhi will help them. The section only claims that it is Delhi Govt's responsibility to help them. Proposal to merge in Delhi

I just came across Delhi & New Delhi articles, as far as I know both have same information and means same city so why two different articles for the same? Can someone please clarify why isn't New Delhi merged into Delhi article? Cr!mson K!ng (talk) 19:13, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

This is for the fact that Delhi is a union territory and one of several metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Chennai etc. New Delhi is capital of India and hence qualifies to have separate article. Delhi is not capital of India and hence deserves separate article just like Pondicherry. --Onef9day (talk) 17:45, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

They are two distinct cities. Old Delhi has a rich history and is a distinct city, it has irregular streets amongst other things. New Delhi was formed in 1911 as a separate city when they switched the capital of india from Kolkota Oppose Profitoftruth85 (talk) 21:13, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Strong Oppose:New Delhi is one of the nine districts of Delhi. It is the capital city of India and the article should not be merged into Delhi. There must exist a seperate article for New Delhi. The difference between this article and the article Delhi is that New Delhi encompasses only the India Gate, The Secretariat and other Government offices. Whereas, Delhi has Red Fort, Qutub Minar and several other monuments. However the article has to be corrected a bit as Akshardham and Humayun's tomb are not located within New Delhi I guess, but their images are used in the article. Airport

Population

Could someone clarify with an up-to-date reliable source just what exactly the population of New Dehli and the metropolitan area is? The lead section and the infobox were contradicting each other, and we have received complaints about the article's accuracy at WP:VRT. Thank you, Skomorokh 10:53, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

This is a problem of confusing the different entities of Delhi that crept into the article when no one noticed. "New Delhi" (India's capital) is part of "Delhi" (National Capital Territory, technically a city, but classified differently by the government) which is itself a part of the "Delhi Metropolitan Area". The correct population census figures are sourced in the section New_Delhi#Demographics, as per the 2001 census. However, as with many articles on cities, this one intermixes the census figures and the 2009/2010 estimates from World Gazetteer. In addition, the entities are often confused: "National Capital Territory" and "National Capital Region", the former includes only Delhi, while the latter includes other cities including NOIDA, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad or parts of them, based on the source. The number that you removed is probably from one of those definitions, but given that it wasn't sourced, it's hard to say, and doesn't belong. That said, this has also identified a bit of a problem with the metro population in the infobox. I'll change to this. —SpacemanSpiff 11:26, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Material more suited for Delhi article

More stuff has crept into this article that properly belongs in the Delhi article (and mostly is there). Removing it from this article, and doing some tidy up. There is still material that may not be applicable here that I'm not sure about. In particular, should the 'Independent India and Autonomy' section also be moved to Delhi? Imc 20:35, 11 September 2005 (UTC) I think it should be. Alot can be told by the crime rate in a city/county. Delhi Montage

This article currently uses the image File:Delhi Montage.jpg, same as the Delhi article. But as New Delhi is just a small part of Delhi, the monuments in the image are not located in New Delhi. Lotus temple (Bahá'í House of Worship) is located in South Delhi, Humayun's Tomb is located at the confluence of Mathura Road and Lodi Road in South Delhi (correct me if I am wrong), Akshardham at the border of East Delhi and NOIDA. India Gate and Connaught Palace are the other two in the picture and are both located in New Delhi. New Delhi also includes Parliament of India, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Secretariat Building, Laxminarayan Temple, Safdarjung's Tomb, Lodi Gardens.

For the Tourist places in New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC area) see this link. As, the photo cannot be used in this article, I searched for other Delhi montages and found, File:Delhi Montage 3.jpg, File:Delhi Montage New copy.jpg and File:Delhi Montage copy.jpg, neither of which is of New Delhi. The article is very similar to Delhi and needs changes from an expert. These are my thoughts and correct me if I am wrong. --WorLD8115(TalK) 13:26, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Montages are nice to have, but they aren't required or even necessary. Just find a good image of something that is in new Delhi, and use that. Something goverment-related would probably be good. In time, someone can put together a montage of actual New Delhi locations, and we can add it then. - BilCat (talk) 17:54, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
I didn't see this discussion, but this is the wrong one for this page, I only noticed it while editing the infobox today. Copy editing

3rd paragraph

In the middle of the first paragraph we read,

"New Delhi is situated within the metropolis of Delhi..."

In the third paragraph, we read:

"The metropolitan area is the largest in the country with a population of more than 21 million. The urban agglomeration is the 7th largest in the world with a population of 23 million people. The metropolis has the highest urban spread in the country." (italics mine)

In the third paragraph, it is not clear to what "urban agglomeration" refers. If "the metropolitan area" is New Delhi, and "the metropolis" (mentioned in the first paragraph) is Delhi, what is "the urban agglomeration? It is obviously larger than New Delhi. By "the urban agglomeration", did the writer mean Delhi? If so, I think this should be made clear. If not, it should be explained. Also, the final sentence, "The metropolis has the highest urban spread in the country" is a bit vague. It seems to refer to the geographical size of the city. Why not use words that make it clear this sentence is about geographical size, and not population?CorinneSD (talk) 23:27, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Establishment

At the end of the second paragraph in the section headed "Establishment", we read the following sentence:

"Lutyens laid out the central administrative area of the city as a testament to Britain's imperial aspirations."

This sentence is a little vague. The phrase "laid out" is not clear. Does this mean "built", "designed", or "unveiled his design"? I think one of these phrases would be clearer. The last sentence of the third paragraph in this section headed "Establishment" is as follows:

The phrase "flanked out of the Rashtrapati Bhawan" is not clear. It also breaks up the flow of the sentence and makes the sentence difficult to understand. Thank you for the explanation. I also found the following sentence near the beginning of the article on the Secretariat building (from the link you provided):
"Situated on Raisina Hill, New Delhi, the Secretariat buildings are two blocks of symmetrical buildings (North Block and South Block) on opposite sides of the great axis of Rajpath, and flanking the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House)."

CorinneSD, perhaps this historical photograph will help explain the relative positions of the buildings:
  • The circular structure seen on the right is the Parliament House (Sansad Bhavan)
  • The two parallel buildings to its left are the North and South blocks of the secretariat
  • The road running between the two blocks is Rajpath, which leads to Rashtrapathi Bhavan, also seen in the photograph.

The second sentence in the third paragraph in the "Establishment" section reads as follows:

"However, it was rejected by the Viceroy when the cost of acquiring the necessary properties was found to be too high."

The antecedent for the pronoun "it" in "it was rejected" is not clear. To what does "it" refer? If it refers to the "reports" submitted by the committee in the previous sentence, it should read, "However, the reports were rejected" or "However, both reports were rejected". However, a few sentences later, the southern site was chosen for construction. So perhaps it should read, "Both reports were initially rejected". I've taken the liberty to combine all these sections under the title of copy editing as it becomes difficult to respond to individual messages in multiple sections. Also, I think you may want to hold off for a bit now, I've just seen the article after many months and there are quite a few errors currently (e.g. the UNESCO sites are not in New Delhi and so on). At present there's way too much info in the article related to Delhi that is passed of as stuff related to New Delhi. At this point I'm not sure whether to remove the errors individually or to scrap sections entirely and rewrite them. I'm creating the list below to arrive at that decision -- feel free to add to the list (and if possible sign with three tildes (~~~) so that we know that the information has been verified to not belong here. Lede: Nine/eleven districts issue needs explanation so it's probably best left out of the lede; centre of the govt of NCT isn't entirely right as it's a bit more nuanced -- the Secretariat is in IP estate, but legislature and Lt Govs offices are in Civil Lines; UNESCO World Heritage sites aren't in ND; I can't see the ref, but it's a stretch to say that ND is a microcosm of India, Delhi perhaps, but not ND surely; does peripheral size info on NCT and NCR belong in the lede? —SpacemanSpiff

Infobox stats: CM/Lt Gov etc doesn't belong here as the territory they cover encompasses this; it should be NDMC officials if I'm not mistaken such as Mumbai where BMC officials are included or Chennai where Chennai corp officials are included; pincodes are fewer than the xxx set which belongs to Delhi -- as far as I know there are only four numbers and even one of those is not entirely that of ND; metro population shouldn't feature in the infobox; the city doesn't have any different official languages from NCT, so Urdu should be added too. —SpacemanSpiff

Climate

I have a question about the section on "Climate" in the larger section on "Geography". I noticed that there was a comment for editors at the beginning of the "Geography" section that is visible only in Edit mode:

"The section should provide data only from the New Delhi area under NDMC. Not of the entire NCT."

I'm sorry, but I don't know what "NCT" is, but if it means the Delhi metropolis, then I wonder if the second-to-last sentence in the section on "Climate" should be there. It gives the high and low temperature extremes for Delhi metropolis. – CorinneSD (talk) 19:19, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

New Delhi as both a Municipal Corporation & District

It should probably be made note of somewhere in the open paragraph that unlike the other municipal corporations in the National Capital Territory (Delhi and Delhi Cantonment) that New Delhi District and New Delhi Municipal Corporation are coterminous (share the exact same borders). It appears that along witht the reorganization of the municipal corporations within the National Capitol Territory (going from 3 to 5), that there was also a reorganization of the administrative divisions of the territory. Most importantly, it appears that while Delhi Cantonment still retains its local government, that it is now under the administrative division of New Delhi instead of South West Delhi. This needs to be made note of somewhere on New Delhi's page. I guess what I'm saying these many years later is that it needs to be made explicitly clear that New Delhi is both a local government (municipal corporation) within, and an administrative division (district) of the National Capitol Territory with the only difference from my last post being that the district includes more territory than the municipal corporation. --Criticalthinker (talk) 10:27, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
At least for the 2001 and 2011 population censuses, the district of New Delhi and the municipal council of New Delhi were not coterminous. The New Delhi municipal council has parts in four districts: New Delhi (but administrates not the entire district, as the Delhi Municipal Corporation administrates a small part, at least as of 2001), Central, South West and South. Apart from the recent reorganization of the municipal corporation of Delhi (split from one entity into three different municipal corporations), I can't see any other changes for the administrative divisions of NCT of Delhi. I assume that the Delhi Cantonment still is within the borders of the South West district, but as before, administrated by the military which probably have their headquarters in New Delhi MC. This page (List of districts of Delhi) clearly shows two charts, with the old showing Dehli Cantonment as a subdivision of South West Delhi administrative district, but with the new charter showing the cantonment as a subdivision of New Delhi administrative district. Did someone not compose these lists, right? Quick question: What are some services that the New Delhi district would handle that the New Delhis municipal council not handle? I ask, because it seems odd to me that a territory this small and tightly packed would be split into municipalities (3 corporations, 1 council, and 1 cantonment) when you could probably effectively govern the entire area with one municipal corporations, or not have any municipalities, at all, and govern it at the administrative district level. I have found content for some of New Delhi's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. Map is so confusing that it approaches worthlessness

The map in the infobox does nothing to clarify where New Delhi is relative to Delhi. I understand from reading the article that New Delhi is within Delhi, but the boundaries are completely unclear in the map (unless it's the purple line circling it all. I agree. It shows New Delhi in the right place, but then the label "Delhi" appears right above it, in smaller letters, implying that's a less important place occupying a small area just a little bit north of New Delhi, and that both are small parts of whatever the purple boundary is meant to represent. In fact (see File:Delhi map.PNG), the purple boundary is Delhi. I've just expanded the caption to clarify that; I wish there was a way to tell it not to show the "Delhi" label as it does.
