Though this cooling technique was first applied to ions, it has since been generalized to trapped neutral atoms. Currently atomic physicists use "atom" to refer to either neutral atoms or ions, when ions are not specifically meant. Also, resolved sideband cooling has not yet been demonstrated in a Penning trap.
