Around Germanou Patron Street[edit]

I tried finding Tabakhane and Germanou Patron Street on a Google map, but found it hard. Much of the lettering was Greek, which I ought to be able to transliterate, but maybe somebody else can figure out whether "around" is the right preposition. Funfree (talk) 06:03, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The origin of the Turkish and Arabic Domination of the Tanning industry in Tabakhane[edit]

Tabakhane is located on the East side of Tophan, the old artillery barracks outside whose Famagusta wall everything was destroyed by some 50,000 cannon balls fired during the siege. The tanning district thus dates to the rebuilding in 1539 after the invasion of the Ottoman Turks and is famous for its Tabakhane Leather used for high end leather jackets, couches, handbags, book bindings, belts, boxing gloves, automobile interiors wallets, shoes and skirts.

Historically Nicosia dates to the middle bronze age when it was a crucial part of the Mycenae Greeks trade with the eastern and southern Mediterranean. was originally Assyrian, later Greek and Byzantine. Still later it was a subject of Rome who used it to control its sea trade with India. This purpose continued through the the crusades following which it came to be dominated by Italian merchants from Genoa and Venice and later the Ottoman empire which brought in the Arabs and Turks. The 12 districts of Nicosia were named after the 12 Ottoman generals who captured the city in 1539.

Even though with the fall of the Ottoman Empire after WWI the British eventually gained control of Cyprus and Nicosia the tanning guilds continued to rule 9 blocks in Tabakhane. Wikipedias timeline for Nicosia in the 16th century shows how that happened. In 1539 Ottoman Turks attacked Limassol with 80,000 men on 1 July. On 25 July besieged Nicosia which fell on 9 September 20,000 20,000 Nicosians, Greek and Latin patriots were killed and 1000 survivors sold in Constantinople as slaves. In 1571 Cyprus became a Venetian colony following which 28 bloody uprisings occurred.Data and Lore (talk) 14:49, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
