Professor Alan Livingston CBE[edit]
Alan Livingston is best known for his leadership of the development of University College Falmouth between 1987 and 2009[2]. He has also played significant roles in creative industries education in the UK since the early 1980s[3]. in 2006 he was awarded the CBE for services to Higher Education. He is now a member of the UK Design Council, and Visiting Professor in Visual Communication at the University of Ulster.
Early Life[edit]
Alan Livingston was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1947. He was educated at Methody (Methodist College Belfast), followed by Ulster College of Art & Design (now part of the University of Ulster), where he graduated in 1967 in typography and graphic design. Between 1967 and 1978 he was a designer practising in Belfast, London and Preston, where, having become an Associate Partner in Building Design Partnership (BDP), he moved into teaching design in 1978.
The Public Sector[edit]
In 1978 Alan Livingston made the critical move from the private sector of design to the public sector of design education: he assumed the role of Head of Division of Graphic Design at Preston Polytechnic (later Lancashire Polytechnic, and since 1992, the University of Central Lancashire). In 1982 he became a member of the Graphic Design Board of the CNAA (the Council for National Academic Awards – the degree awarding authority for the non-university sector in the UK between 1965 and 1992). He also became the Head of the School of Design at Preston in 1982, later to become Dean of Art & Design in 1983, and Dean of Arts in 1985. The title of Professor was conferred by the Polytechnic in 1986.
