Kim Jae-hwan (Hangul:김재환, born May 27, 1996) is a South Korean singer. He is known for finishing fourth in Produce 101 Season 2. Out of the two seasons of Produce 101, he was the only individual trainee to place in the top 11. Subsequently, Jaehwan became a main vocalist for the South Korean boy band Wanna One.[1]

Career[edit]

2012 - 2016: Pre-debut[edit]

In 2012, Jaehwan auditioned for season 2 of Korea's Got Talent held in Daegu..[2] He performed his own rendition of Miss A's song "Bad Girl Good Girl" but wasn't able to advance to the next round. However, he made an impression so much that judge Kim Gura made a special request for Jaehwan to perform again in Seoul. Jaehwan tried again and, this time, got the two votes needed to continue on in the show. He made it to the Semi-final round before being eliminated.

Jaehwan originally signed with The Music Works and formed a "hybrid rock" band named Shelrock. The band frequently busked on the streets of Hongdae prior to debut.[3] Unfortunately, debut plans fell through, and Shelrock disbanded in August of 2015.[4] Jaehwan eventually left The Music Works, and appeared on the singing show SBS' Voice War: God's Voice just a few days later. He challenged and won over veteran singer Yoon Do-Hyun to become the show's first winner. [5]

2017: Produce 101[edit]

In 2017, Jaehwan became a participant on Produce 101 Season 2. He was one of the five individual trainees, or trainees without a label, in the season. He quickly garnered attention for his strong vocal skills in the first evaluation with Super Junior's "Sorry Sorry". [6] He continued to impress with his vocal skills in his subsequent performances of I.O.I's "Downpour" and the original song "Never". The song "Never" managed to place first in various music charts and eventually achieved an all-kill on Instiz. [7] For his performance, Jaehwan was praised for his powerful vocals even while dancing intensely.

In the finale, Jaehwan finished in 4th place with 1,051,735 votes, which secured him a place as a member of Wanna One. He is the highest ranking individual trainee from both seasons, and the only one to end up in the top 11.[8]
