Copyright problem, Jyoti Basu[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm afraid that material you added to this article seems to have duplicated other source(s). The material was copied from: http://jyotibasu.net/?q=node/25. The article has been restored to the version that existed prior to your edits. That text must not be restored, unless it is duly released under a compatible license. (For more information, please see "using copyrighted works from others" if you are not the copyright holder of this material, or "donating copyrighted materials" if you are.) For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or published material; such additions will be deleted. Contributors may use copyrighted publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences or phrases. Accordingly, the material may be rewritten, but only if it does not infringe on the copyright of the original or plagiarize from that source. Please see our guideline on non-free text for how to properly implement limited quotations of copyrighted text. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with these policies. Thank you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 18:19, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are continuing to copy content into this article from other sources, including http://cpim.org/content/life-sketch-jyoti-basu. Please stop. As it says at the bottom of every edit screen, "Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted." While Wikipedia welcomes your contribution to this article, we cannot accept content copied from other sites. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:26, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright block[edit]

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating copyright policy by copying text into Wikipedia from another source without verifying permission. You have been previously warned that this is against policy. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make constructive contributions. Please take this opportunity to be sure you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to quote non-free text. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:57, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The chronology that you added included the following text:
  • "Takes leave from CPM politburo but remains a 'special invitee'. Continues in the CPM central committee."
The source you cited, [1], said:
  • "Takes leaves from the CPM politburo, remains a special invitee . Continues in CPM central committee"
This is not completely rewritten.
You wrote:
  • "Admitted to hospital with blood clot in the brain caused by a fall at home."
  • "Warned Left could lose seats in Lok Sabha election. Proved prophetic."
The source says:
  • "Admitted to hospital with blood clot in the brain caused by a fall at home"
  • "Warns that Left Front seats may fall in Lok Sabha elections. Proved prophetic"
Additional material was copied from or minimally changed from that source.
Given your restoration of this material and the fact that as an IP you were also advised of copyright violation, as well as your adding sentences from other sources, I have temporarily blocked your account. Please do not continue copying content onto Wikipedia. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:57, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

there were more than 15 points in that chronology and u found similarity in 3 of them.........amd u say its a copy right violation!!! u cud have deleted these 3 points.....instead of deleting the entire section! There were some real good info there......why did u do that i can't understand

I didn't find similarity in three of them; I mentioned three as example. There was similarity in more. (For one more explicit example: "Starts trade union activity among railway men. Elected General secretary of BN Rly Workers Union."; "Starts trade union activity among railwaymen. Elected general secretary of BN Rly Workers Union". There is also minimally revised material that is a copyright concern as a close paraphrase of that source: "Withdraws candidature from Baranagore constituency on the day of polling. Alleges massive rigging."; "Withdraws candidature from Baranagar constituency on the day of polling, alleges massive rigging of election". There is more. These are just examples.)
It is a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy, of which you were advised multiple times here and at User talk:59.93.240.49, to copy material from previously published sources onto Wikipedia. You have done this now multiple times. While your first copying was more extensive than later, you have persisted in copying content in spite of all warnings, and even, as I said, restored some of the content here. This can't continue. Wikipedia's copyright policy is clear. You cannot copy material from previously published sources unless these can be verified to be public domain or compatibly licensed with Wikipedia. You can sometimes use brief quotations, but these have to match the circumstances at Wikipedia:Non-free content.
The purpose of the block is to give you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's copyright policies so that you will be able to comply with them for future contributions. In this way, you may be able to continue contributing without having your edits deleted (as it says at the bottom of every edit screen, "Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted.") and your account permanently blocked. We welcome your contributions, but every contributor must comply with these policies.
If you want to add a chronology to the article, you're going to have compile one yourself and not make small changes to the one that they compiled. Not only is the language protected by copyright, but the overall outline of their chronology is copyrighted as well. Facts can't be copyrighted, but a chronology can be "creative" in that the creator chooses what facts are significant for inclusion. Certain facts are going to be common to any chronology of significant events in a life--date of birth, date of death, dates of election to prominent positions, for example. But to avoid infringement, you will need to be sure that your chronology doesn't mirror theirs in great detail. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:23, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
