Newhaven[edit]

Hello. I see you've contributed a fair amount on football in East Sussex. Do you know whether the club competing in the East Sussex League under the name "Newhaven & Cement Works" and then "Newhaven" is the same club as Newhaven F.C.? The latter are listed as winning the RUR Cup in 1904–05, around the same time "Newhaven & Cement Works" became "Newhaven" and won back-to-back league titles (at least according to this site). Cheers, Number 57 15:44, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Number 57: I've had a look on the British Newspaper Archive, but can't find any articles covering Newhaven & Cement Works dropping the 'Cement & Works' part of their name anywhere. Also having had a look through the archives, I believe the club had already changed name (if they are the same club, which I believe so) by the 1904-05 season, so I need to amend the East Sussex League table for that season on my website you've linked to above, apologies for the slightly misleading information! No problem. Seeing as one continued on from the other, I had assumed they were the same club, but can't find any reference to "Newhaven & Cement Works" beyond your website (I don't have access to the Newspaper Archive). If there's anything that links them to the Towner family, I guess that would be definite confirmation that it's the same club. Cheers, Number 57 19:51, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Number 57: Okay, this is getting complicated! I've been trawling through the Newspaper Archives and it's difficult to keep track. What I understand to have happened is that the original Newhaven club merged with Seaford in 1891, the Towner brothers were involved with founding 'Newhaven Rovers' who I assume to go onto become 'Cement Works Rovers' later 'Newhaven & Cement Works', however that is only me making assumptions, as press coverage is a little vague during this era. The Towner brothers involvement seems short lived as by the mid 1890s they're not mentioned in AGMs/smoking concerts etc... My theory is that Newhaven Cement Works became the strongest side in the area and eventually took on the name and identity of the original club formed in 1889. However since this is based on vague information from Newspaper archives and me forming a theory around it, it's probably not that helpful to you. When I get some more time, I'll have to try and dig a bit deeper if I can. Sorry I can't give you the exact info you were after! HFH 1066 (talk) 14:37, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's really helpful. If there are specific newspaper articles that give this info, it would be great to have the article title, newspaper name and dates, so they can be used as references in Newhaven F.C. Cheers, Number 57 14:57, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Number 57: "Seaford - The Football Club" - Sussex Agricultural Express, 18/09/1891 - Merger of Newhaven and Seaford clubs. "Newhaven - Football Club" - Sussex Agricultural Express, 16/10/1891 - Founding of Newhaven Rovers FC. That's all I have at the moment. HFH 1066 (talk) 13:53, 8 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for February 14[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Hastings & St Leonards United F.C., you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Southern League (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi there, I notice you recently changed the club name and added an end date for Chalkley's spell at Hastings. As you seem to be familiar with the subject, I'm happy to bow to your knowledge in terms of distinguishing the clubs, but did you have a source for the dates? Thanks, Nzd (talk) 12:53, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting back to me, and for adding the ref. I've just added a bit to mention that the club was wound up, and another ref to show him still playing there in 1910. Cheers, Nzd (talk) 18:00, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
