Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, MasterOfDesaster99. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the article Polkadot (project), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. Editing for the purpose of advertising or promotion is not permitted. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:32, 17 January 2018 (UTC) At the moment I am not employed by Parity or the Web 3 Foundation but am a CS student. If this status is going to change in the future I will obviously disclose those changes MasterOfDesaster99 (talk) 20:23, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

MasterOfDesaster99, you are an WP:SPA for this topic. Do you have any connection in any way with this subject (any of past, present, future), or with any party that has? Or any other account here that has, or through any other party? What other accounts have you edited as? Your first edit [1] was to say you're a contributor, so you've edited with another account, right, else that wasn't correct when you said that. Widefox; talk 19:05, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any other accounts, I do edit on the fly with my phone mostly without signing in because my password is way to long for me to remember it, only did spelling checking though. If you don't consider that to be a contribution that's fine with me. I don't really get how to answer to any talk pages on the phone and I think it's nicer to discuss with a name than with an IP address. I am active in the cryptocurrency field and have put some money into the Polkadot ICO, am not employed by Parity or the Web 3 Foundation. I had the opportunity to meet some of the wonderful people behind this project in person. Obviously I am going to disclose any changes in this field in the future. The reason why I got a Wikipedia account was because of this project. I thought it would be fun to proof read the article and make it a bit easier for the world to get to know Polkadot. Tbh it's quite annoying to be met with suspicion rather than to be welcomed into the community. I don't know much about the inner workings of Wikipedia but this whole experience makes me question if I am going to contribute stuff in the future. MasterOfDesaster99 (talk) 20:55, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We welcome editors; many of us enjoy proofreading and creating content. Wikipedia, however, has become ubiquitous and many people see it as a means of promotion because Wikipedia articles get favored by search engine results. We (volunteer editors) have also had to fight against paid editors that abuse the community's trust in order to promote particular subjects, misinforming the audience. This is why the Terms of Use require full disclosure. Since you have a conflict of interest in this area, it's best you never edit articles like Polkadot. But with thousands of other articles on Wikipedia, there are many other places you can contribute. I've found that I edit best about subjects that neither I nor anyone else care about because it maximizes objectivity and minimizes drama. Chris Troutman (talk) 21:05, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
