Hello! I’m a Director at Mossley AFC. Our badge was changed over a year ago and I’ve been trying to update it today. I’m new to Wikipedia and aren’t very tech savvy so have been trying for guess what to do. I’m happy to sign over use of our badge and have sent a message saying this is okay through the form on your site. Hello,

I’m sorry but you misunderstand.

I’m a club volunteer - none of us are paid.

There’s no conflict of interest - I’m just trying to make your page for the club accurate, which right now it’s not. You’ll see I edited the players today in good faith and you’ll happily accept that but then still block me for an innocent mistake.

I repeatedly changed the image because I didn’t know why it wasn’t working. There is no copyright issue as earlier on I completed your form giving permission for you to use the club badge image.

Please show some kindness and understanding by explaining what I now need to do. Please remember I’m not paid, I’m a club volunteer at a semi professional football club.

Hello. Even though you are unpaid, you still have a conflict of interest with the organisation and should not be editing the article. If you are unblocked you should suggest changes on the article talk page.

Regarding the club badge, I am not sure you fully understand the ramifications. To allow the image to be on Commons, the club effectively has to give up copyright on it – this means anyone will have the right to use or reproduce it. On top of this, there is simply no need to do so, as the image exists on English Wikipedia at File:Mossley AFC logo.png in a copyright-compliant format. Plus this one has been cropped and had transparency added to it, whereas the image you uploaded to commons has a load of non-transparent whitespace around it.

Finally, regarding the block, you were asked not to revert the image and it was explained clearly above that the previous image file had been updated and you should refresh your cache. Instead, you added it in again. You then ignored a message asking you to undo your change. When the change was undone by someone else, you reverted it in twice more despite having received a warning that this was a copyright violation. I now understand why I should suggest edits on the article talk page. I didn’t know this existed as I’ve not edited before and thought anyone could. Lesson learnt!

Re: Commons, you’re correct, I thought I was just uploading the image and misread and misunderstood. I have since tried to undo this.

You said the badge exists on English Wikipedia at File:Mossley AFC logo.png but the badge was incorrect so I tried to upload the new one. I’m not sure I understand about the white space issue but have several files of the badge so must have used an incorrect one - apologies.

I didn’t understand the messages coming through about changes and didn’t deliberately ignore them. As I’ve tried to explain I’ve not done this before and was just trying to make things better. For example today I updated the website link from a website that is not ours yet your page claimed it was the official website. I updated the link so it’s now accurate. I did the same with the squad section which was a year out of date.

As I’ve explained previously I don’t understand some of the more technical terms used on the updates sent to me so I thought I was doing it incorrectly and tried again - I genuinely didn’t mean to ignore requests, I simply did not understand them as I’m not as good as you.

I’d really appreciate it if I could be unblocked so I can use the talk page instead to suggest edits - I now understand this function. If I’m allowed to do that and no more then your page will be infinitely better. If I don’t follow that then I’d understand blocking me again but it’s honestly a genuine error and lack of understanding on my part.

I hope you can understand that.

The whitespace issue is that the image on commons has lots of white empty space around the image. The one on English Wikipedia is cropped to the edge of the badge, and the remaining white bits around the image are transparent. If you ever need to update the logo again, there is a 'Upload a new version of this file' button at File:Mossley AFC logo.png where you can do so.

The image on commons has already been nominated for deletion. You could leave a comment on the discussion (Commons:Deletion requests/File:Mossley AFC Club badge.jpg) agreeing that it can be deleted. Number 5 7 21:16, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don’t appear to be able to leave a comment - it keeps telling me I’m going to create a new page on commons and I’m nervous of doing that.

One last question - should I suggest edits on the talk page of the club page? Or can I make small edits like adding new players or updating the web link to the official Website?

You have accessed the talk page because you have left two comments on it. But your comments are both asking if you can update the article itself, which has been made clear to you that you can't. Why is this so hard to understand?
