Hi- you tagged this as no source. I think I've figured out where it came from (a Bell Labs newsletter), and their copyright page does indeed indicate that we can use it. What should I put in the image description? Just free text like "Source: ...", or is there some special template I should use? Thanks. —johndburger 03:26, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, glad you were able to investigate the source. I've tagged the image properly--take a look and let me know if you still have any questions. ~MDD4696 15:54, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Well that was simple. Thanks, now I know yet another little way to improve WIkipedia. Argh, you beat me to Dennis_Ritchie.jpg! —johndburger 18:56, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

cheers

Ta for removing the deleted image from my page. Nice of you to be looking out for little things like that :) What was it removed for, anyway? TrianaC 14:54, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I deleted the image because it did not have any source information after having been tagged for 7 days. It was a regular Om symbol; there's an alternative at Image:Aum.svg. ~MDD4696 15:22, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, no worries, I've replaced it. --TrianaC 16:11, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

The discussion in Wikipedia talk:Music samples seems to have stopped suddenly. What happened? I was happy with the improvements that we were making in order to create this guideline. I wish we could restart the discussion. Thank you. CG 17:48, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I'd like to continue discussion as well. The page is still on my watchlist! I've just been busy "in real life" recently. ~MDD4696 17:34, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Mdd4696,
Could you please specify which version you support in Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Hippo pod? Thanks, --Fir0002 08:23, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Featured Picture

Your Featured picture candidate has been promoted
Your nomination for featured picture status, Image:Hippo pod edit.jpg, gained a consensus of support, and has been promoted. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates.

Congratulations! Btw, do you mind if I delete your edit? I didn't gain support and is not used anywhere else. Thanks! --Fir0002 23:32, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem. ~MDD4696 00:06, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Toolserveraccount

Hello Mdd4696,
please send your preferd login-name, your real-name and the public-part of your SSH-Key to . We plan to create your account soon. --DaB.

You made this moving calling it a "spelling correction". The USC Sura 74 spells it the original way... the issue isn't which is wrong--neither are--it's which transliteration we choose to use. It doesn't particularly matter but you should discuss changes like that rather than saying the other way is incorrect. There are differences in transliteration for many of the sura. Thanks. gren グレン 18:20, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

I know absolutely nothing about Sura or Arabic. I changed it to be consistent with the only reference there and the page on Commons. Sorry I didn't have a more accurate edit summary. ~MDD4696 19:24, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Music samples is now a guideline

Wikipedia:Music samples is now a guideline. Thank you for your active participation in the discussion. The guideline will always be open for new proposals and amendments. As for now I invite you to join to the discussion in Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion#Proposal for Music Samples to adopt a new samples-related CSD criterion. CG 15:30, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Sprotect

Haha, yeah I didn't realize that only an admin could sprotect an article. I guess that this makes sense. Funny that it kept the vandals away anyway. Do you know who to contact or how to contact an administrator? There has been a persistant problem with an anonymous vandal for quite some time now on the Buffalo, NY page. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tommycw1 (talkcontribs) 02:20, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm actually an admin, and I've been watching the page. I did actually protect it for about a week a while back. If the anon adds it a few more times, I'll protect it again. What an annoyance this is. ~MDD4696 02:37, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

As for your vote on the Late Night Killers deletion issue

I wish to clarify that my objection is not that the original article be kept, it is that policy was not followed regarding the speedy delete... "not notable" is not cause for speedy delete, but rather failure to even claim notability... while my article I now realize was inappropriate and would need to be entirely rewritten that is precisely what I was trying to do, but was not given warning that this was the issue... Now that the real issue has been uncovered, I wish the subject to be unprotected so I can write a proper and appropriate informative article on the subject. The band DOES meet the notability criteria, and though it was not as clearly expressed as it could have been, a couple of these points were discussed in the original article. I do not wish the original retrieved and reposted. I simply wish to start over again and write a more suitable article on the grounds that the proper deletion process was not followed. - feedkillchain

The deletion was perfectly justified. If you don't understand Wikipedia's policies in detail, I suggest you focus your efforts elsewhere and attempt to learn them, instead of trying to create a hubbub. Your other article, Eric "Red Mouth" Gebhardt, seems to be doing just fine. ~MDD4696 14:13, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Aesthetic appeal

Cyan, ugh! Please use a different color! Perhaps a contrasting color... there's already a ton of blue on the page. ~MDD4696 16:16, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

What color do you have in mind? joturner 16:19, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Social Problems Buffalo, New York

What part of the social problems article that I wrote would you dispute? Have you ever even been to Buffalo? I see what I wrote in there on a daily basis. Roc 04:07, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Of course I have been to Buffalo. I've lived in Western New York all of my life. I mentioned the reasons I removed the social problems section at Talk:Buffalo, New York#Social Problems. If you wish to discuss this issue furthur, please do so in that section on the article's talk page. However, I suggest that you read WP:NPOV and WP:NOR first. ~MDD4696 15:48, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Okay I responded to you there. You are also welcome to edit the template. Be bold :) --Cat out 16:28, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Nevermind you already have. I have modified it a bit after ya (I did not readjust the sizes). I bolded english field. What do you think? --Cat out 16:33, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
I like the template better now :). ~MDD4696 17:21, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Please will you take a look at the speedy tag that I've contested. --Dweller 16:03, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Would you like me to create a proper disambiguation page? ~MDD4696 16:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
It's not a disambiguation issue. It's possibly a list issue, but probably a full sub-article to historiography. I'm a bit cheesed off you deleted it without further debate. If you look at my contributions log, you'll see I've been buzzing around contributing variously this afternoon. In my efforts, I've been doing some work on historiographical schools. I didn't regard that stub as a place-marker and I don't think you should have been so quick off the mark to speedy it. --Dweller 16:20, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
There's really no debate here. It wasn't a stub. The speedy was justified.
Please don't take offense--it's not an attack on you and I'm sure that the article has a place here. It's not like I deleted something you had been working on for hours! When you have something substantive to contribute, feel free to re-add it. But until then, there doesn't need to be a one-liner of links to other pages. If you want to create a list, a better article name would be List of Schools of History. ~MDD4696 16:26, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
You could have waited to speedy it until after you'd talked to me, not the other way round, especially as I'd asked for your advice on your talk page, which drew your attention in the first place. --Dweller 16:30, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
You only asked me to take a look at the speedy tag you contested. I did, and I judged that it was a valid speedy tag, so I deleted it. Honestly, it's not the end of the world. Just recreate it with an introductory paragraph explaining what a School of History is with links to those three that you had previously mentioned.
I have to go now, so I'll leave you with a quote from Category:Rouge admins: "We promise to block IPs for 61 years, block and protect the talk pages of editors we edit war with, and unprotect the main page on April Fool's day." ~MDD4696 16:47, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Probably. There's most likely going to be more submissions about it. -The Splendiferous Gegiford 20:34, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

WoW Fair Use Pictures

I could be wrong and it should be checked out, but I believe Blizzard's stance on screenshots is that they do not object to them on non-profit fan sites. They have encouraged the building of WoW community sites and, as such, I do not think they have a problem with the type of things we have on Wikipedia. Just a thought, though. RobertM525 07:05, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

The problem with fair use, is that it does not apply if there is no commentary behind the picture. It has to have a reason for being there, not because it looks good and things like that. As for Blizzard's stance on screenshots, it dosn't matter as Wikipedia is anal in this regard. Using images that have not been released under GPL, can not be used, meaning any screenshot of games, or as with Warcraft, images of characters etc. from the game. This does not apply to games that have been released under GPL. Havok (T/C/c) 07:33, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Not to mention that Wikipedia's goal is to build the free encyclopedia, and that fair use images work against this goal. ~MDD4696 18:16, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Supposing a Blizzard representative said that they did not object to the use of these screenshots—then what? I plan to look into the matter, but I'm not sure there would be much point if they were bound to be deleted anyway, no matter how they were tagged. RobertM525 18:46, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Unless they released them under a free license, Wikipedia would still consider them fair use screenshots like all of the rest. We have a deprecated tag for images used with permission, {{Copyrighted}}. ~MDD4696 19:00, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok. Then I interprete the rules otherwise. Oh, and please give me the exact paragraph and sub paragraph of the US copyright law which stats that "fair use images are not to be used on Wikipedia, if no no critical commentary is given." I have contacted BradPatrick and asked for his clarification on this subject, as it's all very hazy at best. Until then, we leave the galleries as they are. Havok (T/C/c) 09:29, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

It's not my job to teach you about fair use. It is your burden to ensure that the images fall under fair use. You can read the U.S. code yourself. ~MDD4696 00:11, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
But seeing as it's still not written in the policy; I can't be burdened to read the law of the United States, as I am no citizen of your country. I have asked BradPatrick to look at the matter, and give me his view on it. If he says it's illegal I will either add critical commentary to them, or I will remove them. Until then, I see all removeal as vandalism. That is my way of interpreting the rules. Havok (T/C/c) 09:08, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Vandalism or not, it sure makes the articles significantly more boring/ugly. :) RobertM525 18:46, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

re: Ranga (slang)

G4 is only for when the article is a substantially identical copy. If you review the old version that was deleted via AfD, and then look at the next version, which was created by a different user, they are completely different. I don't think speedy deletion was appropriate. --Aguerriero (talk) 23:21, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

I'd bet that it is the same person, or a meatpuppet that recreated the article. When it was first created, we had all sorts of problems from the high schooler and his friends who created it. Anyways, the new article is about the exact same subject, with no new material that would justify a Wikipedia entry. It's still just a dictionary definition.
If you undelete the article I won't get into a wheel war with you; I made my best judgement and did what I believed to be the most appropriate action. ~MDD4696 23:39, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
I'll trust your judgement on it since you obviously know more about the history than I. I'm sure it would get deleted anyway :) --Aguerriero (talk) 23:52, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Marking images with no fair use rationale

Hi, Mdd4696. I noticed that you marked quite a few images with the {{no rationale}} tag. However, this tag is only for fair use images using the {{fairuse}} or {{fair use in}} tags. Please make sure that you do not apply the tag to images using specific fair use tags such as {{promotional}}. Thanks, Pagrashtak 17:30, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, a few of us have addressed the notability of this article's subject, both in the article itself, and in its talk page. Would you be willing to re-visit and weigh in again? Matt Fitzpatrick 05:05, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Image

Thank you for deleting it. I think this was the reason why my Userpage was vandalized by Korean (61.xxx.xxx-nearly 220s.xxx.xxx, etc.) vandals using racist attacks. They have been blocked since. --D.F. Williams 17:06, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

How could they miss it?

No joke, where else would I put him? Uh.. I'd like to establish a "Astronauts in popular culture" section or an Astronauts in popular culture page, there would be alot that could be added to either (think movies and games). Thought I may need help with the creation and setup. What do you think ? Thanks, Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 09:25, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

This section would be kind of touchy... you'd have to make sure it's worthwhile. Do some research and see what you can find. Ideally you want to find a report or something someone else has published on Astronauts in popular culture. You need to be careful to avoid doing original research (for example, if you compiled a list of movies that feature astronauts, that'd be fine. Saying anything about those movies is probably OR unless you read it from somewhere else).
Images are generally meant to be a complement to the article text on Wikipedia. Adding an image for decoration, like the Lego image, can get out of hand real quickly. Imagine the Bulldozer article containing images of every bulldozer people uploaded.
Lastly... about SVGs. Although there are programs that can convert from raster images to SVG, they don't do so very well. If you want to create SVG images, download Inkscape and create the image from scratch.
Good luck! ~MDD4696 16:40, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Spoken WIkipedia

Hi. I would very much like to participate in Spoken Wikipedia, but as the talkpage shows, I have had a running battle with my microphone. I've finally got it working and my voice clear, but no matter how I do it, I cannot eradicate background noise, at least not without damaging the recording. I saw your name on the Recording how to - is it ok if I send you a sample recording and see if you can deal with it? Dev920 16:51, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes... either email me using "E-mail this user" in the toolbox (I'll email you back so you can send me the file) or upload the file to Wikipedia or Commons. I'll see what I can do :). ~MDD4696 17:38, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Here you go. I hope it's just me being technologically retarded and don't need to buy new recording hardware! Dev920 22:09, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Gates of Ishtar

Hey. You created Gates of Ishtar/Temp last December. Is there a reason why it has been hidden on a sub-page for almost a year? I didn't move it to Gates of Ishtar yet. Thanks, Prolog 20:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

I have noooooo idea. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I've moved it. ~MDD4696 02:44, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Notability Guidelines

Hey. I was wondering if you could share with me the pages to see what qualifies as notable so that I could consult it for future reference :) Thanks, Bgold4 02:26, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, there are numerous pages at Wikipedia:Notability that you can read. However, remember that they are guidelines. There will surely be instances where the correct course of action would be to go against them. Use your best judgment. ~MDD4696 03:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi. You added an importance tag to the Device paradigm article in November 2005. I have added a lot of material to this article, including a number of external links that discuss and deploy the concept. Can we now remove the importance tag? --RichardVeryard 00:37, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
