"Sicko Mode" genre(s)

Hi SnapSnap, hoping you can help, I'm unsure about which genre(s) exactly Billboard is calling "Sicko Mode" when they say it broke "the mold of what a rap-turned-pop record should sound like" (out of pop-rap, hip hop or/and pop).
And whether either of these statements is definitive in calling the song hip hop:

  • "Meyers used his expertise behind the camera -- which has graced many of the 21st century's most iconic hip-hop videos"
  • "It's going to be interesting to see the impact the now multi-platinum certified "SICKO MODE" has on creativity and song structure in hip-hop going forward."

The Musical Hype saying "There's some country, some reggae, and some pop." does not mean a country, reggae and pop song. Metro saying "and including country-reggae in the case of uninviting opener Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed." mean a country-reggae song. Can you help me out? 2402:1980:24D:56EB:5BE3:C24B:5742:51FC (talk) 06:40, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

March 2019

SnapSnap it might be worth investigating Musicfan122 as sock return of previously blocked user. The user literally started editing on January 3, 2019 and all the edits seem to be like an extremely experienced editor. Which is completely fishy. —IB [ Poke ] 12:24, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

@IndianBio: I did find it odd that the user seemed to know a lot about the guidelines, even though they've had that account for two months. Any idea of possible socks? snapsnap (talk) 18:26, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
I'm gonna ping a couple of users here. Hey @Ss112: and @SNUGGUMS:, does this user, Musicfan122 (talk · contribs) edits remind you of someone? The account just started in Jan 2019, but the editing is too polished for a newbie. —IB [ Poke ] 17:40, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Nobody else comes to mind right now, though for what it's worth, that user has been blocked for 72 hours due to edit warring. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 18:04, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
There seems to be a whole bunch of disruptive editors who frequent racially sensitive topics like White people and Slavery and across over to music articles, so I had some ideas, then I saw their response on their talk page and they don't speak like anyone I know. However, maybe one could ask Bbb23 to check if they're a sock of a blocked user? Ss112 00:04, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
SnapSnap, @Ss112: and @SNUGGUMS:. So guys turns out User:Musicfan122 was indeed a sockpuppet. What a waste of time for everyone. —IB [ Poke ] 13:33, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
At least the account has now been indefinitely blocked. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 14:36, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi SnapSnap. News.com.au says "electro urban pop of Dark Horse". "Urban pop" is related to urban contemporary. "Electro" is not a genre since probably electronic or electrotype. Can you please remove redundant for "pop"? 2402:1980:244:7D7A:79B7:2BA1:F066:DC72 (talk) 18:37, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Oh yes. Can you please remove redundant for "pop" too on Sweet but Psycho? 2402:1980:244:7D7A:79B7:2BA1:F066:DC72 (talk) 19:29, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Confused about how 7/10 rating is different from 7/10 star rating

A change of a PopMatters citation at Halcyon (album) was reverted because the archived version stated 7 out of 10, while the current version shows 10 stars, 7 high-lighted and 3 greyed out. To me, those both say 7 out of 10. Why is the old system preferred over the current star system? Mburrell (talk) 19:52, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

@Mburrell: When the Halcyon review was published, PopMatters reviews still used a 10-point scale. They didn't start using the star system until May 2015, so the original ratings for reviews published before that must be preserved. snapsnap (talk) 21:08, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
I won't promise to remember that rule, but I won't fight or question other future reversals by you. I will point out that their star system is also 10-point scale, and they did not adjust the rating, so 7 points out of 10 or 7 stars out of 10 imply the same score to me. Mburrell (talk) 02:27, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
@Mburrell: What I meant by a 10-point scale is that the site's former rating system consisted of integers (from 1 to 10) rather than stars – see WP:ALBUM/SOURCE for more information. Even if "7/10" and "" imply the same score, we're still supposed to stick to the source (in this case, the original 7/10 rating). snapsnap (talk) 08:34, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

User:PantherCoulee

Hey, I see you've been keeping an eye on PantherCoulee. Next time you see them add fake chart positions or unsourced information to an article, I'd say just go ahead and report them at ANI with a couple of diffs and say they've been warned sufficiently. It's gone far enough, and they haven't responded to or apparently heeded any of your warnings. Ss112 01:00, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

@Ss112: Will do that. Cheers. snapsnap (talk) 17:47, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

Banks is Jewish, unfortunately it takes OR to note that 🤷‍♀️

Many months ago I provided a source that was evidently reverted, an obituary of her grandfather which states clear as day that she comes from a Jewish family. Some people think obits are admissable while others think they violate BLP. It’s just loathsome that people can’t seem to grasp that it was one ancestor (her great-grandmother Rose Cohen) that was born in England, and her parents are not in any way shape or form emigrants. It’s a conflation from the Sydney Morning Herald and an assumption based on her surname. All of her immediate relatives are from California. That’s why the note was placed there. People seem to think that just because she had an EP called London that she’s Lily Allen. Eventually, one would hope she clears that mess up one day. Trillfendi (talk) 01:57, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

@Trillfendi: Banks has never publicly referred to herself as Jewish (not that I'm aware of). How can that obituary verify that Richard Montgomery Gold really was her grandfather? Sure, it does mention that one of his grandchildren is called Jillian (no surname, though) and that he passed away in Tanzana, where Banks grew up, but other than that, there's no explicit connection between Banks and this Richard man. Even if he really was her grandfather, the fact that he was living at the Los Angeles Jewish Home before his death does not confirm that Banks comes from a Jewish family, given that the Home is not exclusive to Jewish people. I removed the note because, as I said, there are no sources that explicitly support Banks being of Jewish origin or having a grandmother from London. Stating that Banks "has some English ancestry" while the Sydney Morning Herald article says that she's "the daughter of English parents" goes against WP:STICKTOSOURCE and WP:SYNTH. If that particular piece of information is disputed, the SMH source should probably be removed. snapsnap (talk) 04:05, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
Publicly available records (including the CA Birth Index which shouldn’t really be there because that’s just distasteful) validate that Richard Gold was her grandfather; at the very least it corroborates that her mother is Gail Robin Gold, the daughter of Richard Gold and Judith Grossman (all born in California), the daughter of Rebecca Miller who was born in Colorado. That aligns with ancestral records that confirm her ancestors were Jews who immigrated from Poland, Russia, Austria, and Hungary. But I’m no anthropologist, alas I don’t recall which was which, it was way back. I do remember once seeing a picture of ancestor who was buried at a Jewish cemetery, as some ancestry website had it. Folks can just go on Instagram to see Marissa is her sister though. Trillfendi (talk) 04:53, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
@Trillfendi: We'd still need reputable publications as sources, rather than birth records or Instagram. For instance, take a look at the sources used in Natasha Lyonne#Early life. To be honest, there doesn't seem to be much information about Banks' family online, other than the fact that her parents divorced when she was younger. snapsnap (talk) 06:02, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Notting Hill

If Notting Hill is a ‘comedy-drama’, then other Richard Curtis rom-coms like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and the Bridget Jones’ films should be termed comedy-dramas as well, but they are not, they’re categorised simply as ‘comedy’ or ‘romantic comedy’. I believe you have to be consistent about things like this, hence why I keep changing it back to ‘comedy’ in the lead. Think before you accuse me of doing things ‘for no apparent reason’ Scf1985 (talk) 15:20, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

@Scf1985: We're not supposed to classify films based on similar films/other films by the same director just for the sake of consistency – doing so falls under WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. You rarely provide edit summaries, so there really was no apparent rationale for your changes to the lead section. snapsnap (talk) 16:26, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

That’s fair enough. I’ll try and remember to provide edit summaries in future Scf1985 (talk) 16:42, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi SnapSnap, could you change the cover art to one of these better quality versions without the PA sticker please? ([1], [2]) Theo Mandela (talk) 22:22, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

@Theo Mandela:  Done. FYI, you can upload files yourself as well by going here. snapsnap (talk) 05:22, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Formatting

Hi SnapSnap, sorry to ask, but could you update the page and infobox layout for Left My Heart in Tokyo please? I'm not sure if we should be using hlists or asterisks in the box columns, as well as other formatting guidelines. Theo Mandela (talk) 23:37, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your contributions! In reply to your poster update, you actually reduced the dimensions. Have you seen my last edit there, where I linked WP:IMAGERES? It says that most common pictorial needs can be met with an image containing no more than about 0.1 megapixels, allowing common cover art to be shown at 250 × 400 pixels. Please comment, as I must say it should be updated back, dimensions can be checked again using this tool. M. Billoo 19:10, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

@M.Billoo2000: Hey. WP:IMAGERES also states that "images should be rescaled as small as possible to still be useful as identified by their rationale, and no larger." The maximum width displayed in the film infobox is 220px – I don't see a reason why the poster should be any wider than that. JPG is a lossy format, so images wider than 220px will result in a quality decrease when added to the infobox. If this were a PNG file, enlarging the image wouldn't be an issue. snapsnap (talk) 23:23, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Entertainment Weekly

Hi what is the stand on Entertainment Weekly's sidebar for genres? Is it alright to use or not? 82.132.226.147 (talk) 14:44, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

I don't think there's a consensus for EW's sidebar genres, but it's probably the same logic as AllMusic: only genres mentioned in the review itself should be used. snapsnap (talk) 23:26, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
If that is correct then please see The Beginning (The Black Eyed Peas album) as that uses it too. 2A02:C7F:70ED:C900:1866:8C3F:8800:45AB (talk) 06:04, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

Please provide sources for the images you add

Hi. Please start providing the source for where you have gotten your images. You replace the image if it's still a JPG on near every article you edit, so you absolutely should be providing the website you sourced your PNG from. Yes, I understand source= or website= is not a required parameter of Template:Album cover fur and its variants, but I don't think you should be relying on the template to cover you and automatically say "The image can be obtained from the record label." Unlike your edits, that seems lazy. You should be providing a source so other editors can verify it's a reliable source, otherwise you could have gotten the image from literally anywhere, and that's not good practice nor is it the best way to source images. Thanks. Ss112 01:57, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

I second what Ss112 said, and seeing no source URL at all for an image makes me suspicious regardless of who posted the upload. It can seem like someone's trying to hide that they pulled it off a fansite or, even worse, fabricated it altogether when they use the label description as a potential disguise for unofficial cover art. This often prompts me to find a link to use or delete the image from an infobox if I can't find any viable source for it. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 02:20, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
Will do. snapsnap (talk) 17:54, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

@Goldfeathermil: Wikipedia articles cannot be used as references to another Wikipedia page, per WP:CIRCULAR. Secondly, album genres require sources that refer to the album as a whole, not individual songs. snapsnap (talk) 07:13, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Blondie is listed but the is no number of certificiados meaning like this: https://i.imgur.com/8mEN6Ca.png so if there is not a number next to artist/album does not that mean is not a certified gold record? Everywhere else it states the number with mostly platinum ones. Where are the numbers for all the other ones? Dhoffryn (talk) 10:57, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

@Dhoffryn: There's no "Certificados" column for gold certifications, because unlike platinum certifications, gold certifications are not numbered. (The BVMI does issue awards for 3× Gold and 5× Gold, but that's an exception to the rule.) There's a "1999 Oros" sub-section that begins on the page before the one that lists No Exit (see here), meaning all those albums were certified gold in 1999. Besides, what would be the point of listing albums that were never certified? snapsnap (talk) 16:18, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

That was my thought, why would all those albums be listed if they are not certified, but under Bjork Vespertine, Cranberries and some other gold other albums was visible that column with number 1, and the others were not (like Blondie on that page), so I was a bit confused. Thanks for the clarification. Dhoffryn (talk) 23:42, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

PNGs

When an editor asks me why PNGs are the preferred file format for album and single covers, I only really know to show them WP:IUP#FORMAT that recommends PNGs be used (of course, JPGs are compressed as well, which is an additional reason). Or is there another clearer explanation somewhere? I feel like there is but I don't know it. If you can point to me another if it exists, it'd be appreciated. Thanks. Ss112 20:30, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

@Ss112: I usually cite MOS:HOTLINK, which states that PNG is "useful for storing graphics that contain text, line art, or other images with sharp transitions." There's also WP:IUP#FORMAT, like you mentioned. Otherwise, I'm not aware of any hard guidelines that specifically favor PNGs over JPGs for cover arts. Most music editors seem to prefer PNG covers simply because it's a lossless format and that should be reason enough. snapsnap (talk) 23:59, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi @SnapSnap: Since "alternative rock" is already sourced, another genre "rock" seems far too vague for it. 2402:1980:824B:8697:457F:1CDB:F954:6137 (talk) 17:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

ANI

Hey. I'm getting some slack regarding my ANI. Any chance you could also mention the ongoing battle that repeated warnings don't resolve with this user? I'd be grateful. Robvanvee 18:24, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

Much appreciated! Robvanvee 05:09, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
@Robvanvee: No problems. Hopefully this will get sorted out soon snapsnap (talk) 06:22, 11 October 2019 (UTC).
I'm struggling to keep my cool with this guy! His ignorance of policy and suggestions of there being no disruption is bewildering. If I didn't know better I'd assume they are new to Wikipedia or like to just hang around ANI dropping WP:NOT PERFECT into conversations to antagonize editors. I guess we soldier on. Robvanvee 09:57, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
@Robvanvee: Agreed, that user's inability to perceive the unconstructive nature of Tmayerferg101's edits is beyond frustrating. He isn't even an administrator, and his input so far has been nothing but useless, mentioning policies that are completely irrelevant to this particular case, while ignoring the one policy that actually matters. I'm sure he didn't even analyze Tmayerferg101's edit history. We need an actual admin to step in. snapsnap (talk) 18:20, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Hey SnapSnap. It's starting to look like no one is going to review this case and after 72 hours of inactivity it automatically gets archived, which will be a bummer. Robvanvee 10:44, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
@Robvanvee: Unbelievable... Well, if Tmayerferg101 resumes their unconstructive edits, I say we either file another ANI report (and hope an actual admin chimes in), or we this directly to WP:AIV. snapsnap (talk) 16:34, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Facepalm! Robvanvee 18:18, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Hey Snap. How weird is this ANI case? Seems no admin is prepared to look at it. How much experience do you have at ANI? I've been there quite a bit and this will be the 2nd time it gets archived due to inactivity. I'm almost tempted to change some punctuation just to keep it there until someone looks at it but will probably be told off for doing so. I guess we follow your earlier advise and wait for it to happen again before opening another case. Your thoughts? Cheers! Robvanvee 05:18, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
@Robvanvee: It really is odd that no admin has gotten involved. I have no previous experience at ANI since this is my first time commenting there. I see that Tmayerferg101 continues with their unsourced, unexplained edits (sigh). I might drop a line on their talk page explaining exactly what they're doing wrong, since the warnings and the ANI report don't seem to be working. If the user doesn't stop, WP:AIV might be our only solution at this point. snapsnap (talk) 18:28, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Cool, thanks! Yeah and as such I have added it to the list at the ANI discussion. Another 72 hours for an admin to check, I hope. I've seen people indeffed for this sort of thing but I just want an admin to caution the dude. Let's see what your line dropping does. Robvanvee 18:36, 18 October 2019 (UTC)

Keep an eye on Dua Lipa discography?

Hey there. Have seen you edit Dua Lipa discography before. Anyway, the user U990467, who likes to make over 20 contributions in a row what they could do in a few has decided it's their latest target, and changing widths and what single is from what album when it's already been implicitly, if not explicitly agreed upon is not the way to do things. They've been warned and told to discuss any changes, but this user has been a bit of an edit warrior in the past. If you could, could you help keep an eye on the article? Thanks. Ss112 22:55, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

@Ss112: I did use to edit that page quite often, but it's not on my watchlist anymore. I'll try to keep an eye on it, though. snapsnap (talk) 03:10, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
