Objectives[edit]

Wikimedia UK's objectives	Residency's objectives
G1: Develop Open Knowledge	Be an advocate or open knowledge within the University's collections and community, which would enrich Wikipedia and sister projects and enhance the University's role in open knowledge and public engagement. Identify opportunities for content improvement and image releases.
G2a: Develop, involve & engage WMUK volunteers	Organise and host workshops for University staff, students and public to enable them to directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles.

Outcomes[edit]

This month has been focussed on laying the foundations for the many editathon events we have planned for Autumn/Winter this year as well creating video tutorial content & reaching out to instructors & learning technologists at the university who may be interested in working with us.

I have shared & learnt a great deal of good practice from attending the annual Wikimania conference in Esino Lario, Northern Italy, from 23-27 June 2016. During which time I made a number of contacts and learnt a good deal about relevant initiatives as regards Content Translation, Wikidata, Wikisource, Wiki Education, Wikicommons and GLAM among other things.

I also liaised with Dr. Cathy Southworth at the Centre for Regenerative Medicine to finalise arrangements for the Eurostemcell editathon on 20th July which make links with the Wellcome Library residency and European partner labs. The expectation is that this will be a regular event every year for Stemcell Awareness Day.

I have liaised with sixteen learning technologists and academic support librarians to arrange a 'Train the Trainer' event for 23rd August.

I met with Dr. Charlotte Bosseaux of the Translation Studies MSc course who is keen to use Wikipedia's Content Translation tool in next semester's course. I also continued to liaised with Professor Alexander Chow who wishes to include a Wikipedia assignment in next semester's World Christianity postgraduate taught course.

I have met with Sally Kerr, Open Data Manager at Edinburgh City Council to discuss how council & library staff could better integrate their work with Wikimedia projects. I have also agreed to run a 4 week Wikipedia training course during the Summer for the Online History Msc students beginning 18th July. I also met with Amy Woodgate, MOOCs Project Manager at Edinburgh University, to discuss how Wikipedia could possibly be incorporated into MOOCs going forward.

I have continued my Skype sessions with Richard Nevell at WMUK in addition to Histropedia's Navino Evans, the National Library of Wales' Jason Evans and the Bodleian Library's Wikimedian in Residence Martin Poulter. This has assisted with the arrangements & content for next month's Wikisource & Wikidata Showcase on 2nd August.

I ran 3 Wikipedia training sessions at the end of June and beginning of July and received interest from students on the Edinburgh Digital Ambassador programme to complete Wikimedia activities as part of their 50 hours of digital skills training they need to undertake & evidence. In particular, Annie Caldwell is going to take high quality pictures of buildings around Edinburgh and upload them to Wikicommons.

I lead the training of the History of Veterinary Medicine editathon on the 4th of July which has led to increased interest in running a follow up session in early September and several staff wishing to become Wikipedia trainers.

I also set up & attended working group meetings to discuss the upcoming events for Edinburgh Gothic, Day of the Dead and Ada Lovelace Day editathons.

Partnerships[edit]

Partnered with the Vet School to deliver the History of Veterinary Medicine editathon for staff and Wikipedia training sessions for staff (& students potentially too) in September.
Partnered with Gill Hamilton (National Library of Scotland) and Imogen Gibbons of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery for the Edinburgh Gothic event - which will be supported, if not attended by Penny Fielding (Grierson Chair of English and Head of English Literature at the University of Edinburgh). The University of Sheffield's Centre for Gothic Studies are also wanting to be involved and/or run a syncronous event in Sheffield.
Partnered with the Library & University Collections' team to run 'taster' training sessions for staff and look into the best way of bulk importing CC-BY images from the Luna image database.
Partnered with Hamish Macleod of the PgCAP course to embed Wikipedia within the course design for this year and future years.
Partnered with Kacper Lyskiewicz to run a 4 week Wikipedia training course for the Online History MSc course starting on 18th July 2016.
Partnered with Sian Bayne & Christine Sinclair of the Digital Education MSc course to see if Wikipedia training can be embedded in their course design.
Partnered with James Smith (Vice Principal - International) to deliver an International Alumni editathon event in October 2016.

'International alumni - Vice Principal (International), James Smith, has been authorised to erect a number of blue plaques celebrating the contribution of Edinburgh University's international alumni on the international stage. I have been tasked with identifying suitably notable subjects for our historians to investigate & help create articles on. (To be confirmed).
Vet School editing training for Staff CPD - mooted for September 2016.
Eurostemcell editathon - Booked in for 20th July 2016 at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Regenerative Medicine.
Digital Education Msc - Discussions to take place about how to embed an element of Wikipedia training within this course.
National Library of Scotland - Kelvinhall relaunch Wikimedia event - To be confirmed as project is delayed).
Edinburgh Gothic - Planned in for 12th November which will cover art, architecture, music, literature (historic and contemporary), film. Penny Fielding at the English Literature department is supporting the project as are the National Library of Scotland (hosting the event), the National Galleries of Scotland and the University of Sheffield's Centre for Gothic Studies.
Translate-a-thon - Reaching out to international students to translate articles from English Wikipedia to their own native language Wikipedia. Pencilled in for 28th September as part of the Translation studies MSc course.
Festival of Architecture 2016 - Have contacted a number of people at the Edinburgh College of Art about potentially running an architecture-themed editathon to celebrate the Festival of Architecture 2016.
Day of the Dead - An editathon for Halloween/Samhain 2016 celebrating the lives of those who have passed on through creating Wikipedia pages utilising obituaries from Scottish newspaper archives.
The Library & University Collections - a number of recommendations have been submitted to the L&UC team for suggested editathon events which may be the best vehicle for making best use of their collection materials and opening them up to a global community. Taster training sessions have been identified as the way to take this forward.
Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology - Cara Jones, Adopt-a-Monument Project Manager from Archaeology Scotland, has suggested a collaboration on an archaeology editathon, which was one of my suggestions to the L&UC team.
Botanic Concrete - Collaboration proposed with Viviana Checchia, Public Engagement Curator at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow.
Divinity editathon - to be held at New College immediately prior to running the Wikipedia assignment as part of the World Christianity MSc course.
The History of Nursing editathon - mooted for Friday 4th November 2016. Liaising with Marshall Dozier, Academic Support Librarian, about this and about potentially being involved in educating secondary school children about information literacy through Wikipedia.
