This course provides a transnational, intersectional overview of gender-based violence in a range of forms. From interpersonal and domestic violence to sexual harassment and violence within the criminal justice system, gender-based violence has been the focus of local and international policies, activist priorities, and academic research. In GWST 3450, we will take a critical stance to interrogate the ways that the categories of race, class, sexuality, ability, and citizenship expand and contract survivors’ social and legal experiences. We will explore a range of theories, from carceral to abolitionist perspectives on justice, that all strive towards a single goal: to create a violence-free, more equitable world for all.
