In addition to the Russian Caucasus, the Montes Caucasus is "a rugged range of mountains in the northeastern part of the Moon ... Mare Imbrium to the west with the Mare Serenitatis to the east." Apollo 17 landed at the south-eastern "shore" of the Mare Serenitatis (the "sea of serenity"). Two crew landed on the Moon, Eugene Cernan (commander) and Ron Evans (command module pilot); Harrison Schmitt (lunar module pilot) remained in lunar orbit.
