WP:DYK section of portal discussion moved to Portal talk:Textile Arts/DYK. Cirt (talk) 19:07, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Intro text is deficient

Portal:Textile Arts/Intro

Someone should either:

  1. Expand this intro text on their own, using some nice wikilinking and such, or
  2. Find a good "main article" as discussed above (or write a new one for Textile arts) and then bold the wikilink to that article in the intro text. The WP:LEAD from that article could serve as the intro text for this portal.

Cirt (talk) 20:35, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

I have done these things:
How would we feel about changing out the image in the Portal Intro to the one used in the article (right}? It's more representative and more colorful (and easer to tell what one is looking at). - PKM (talk) 20:26, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Commons link in portal

How can we link our Commons link in the footer to Commons:Category:Textile arts rather than Commons:Textile Arts, as the Religion portal does?

I have done a bunch of cleanup in the Commons - more is needed. - PKM (talk) 22:50, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

I'll fix that soon, and the whole "sister links" section as well. Cirt (talk) 22:55, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Cirt. Also see just above re: the textile arts article if you missed it in my flurry of changes to this page today. - PKM (talk) 23:33, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Intro, and/or namechange of this portal?

There is no such article on Wikipedia "Textile arts" - but there are two other closer ones:

  1. Fiber art
  2. Textile

Anyone think we should move this portal to one of those names? Or, conversely, that someone should create an article for Textile arts? (Currently a redirect to Fiber art) Cirt (talk) 16:42, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Personally I think it'd be better if someone just creates an article for "Textile arts", so that this portal has an obvious main article for it. Cirt (talk) 20:59, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually that got bot-redirected on January 15 because the article never developed. DurovaCharge! 23:03, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Weirder than that; Textile arts got redirected to Textile art (not the same thing!) and thenTextile art got redirected to Fiber art, which makes perfect sense.
I do think we need Textile arts as a survey article. - PKM (talk) 17:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, then at some point someone should remove the redirect and recreate the article. Would make for a good WP:DYK. Cirt (talk) 17:59, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

I've started a survey article at Textile arts; will expand today. - PKM (talk) 18:28, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Wow, looks good. Cirt (talk) 05:14, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, thank you. DurovaCharge! 01:19, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Surprise in Unassessed

I have some good news. I am working on clearing out Unassessed and came across Knitta, a article rated as GA. This should help in the ongoing bid for Featured Portal Status. Geoff Plourde (talk) 20:46, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Knitta, thanks. I'll add that one soon. Cirt (talk) 21:50, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Where do we stand?

Cirt, could you give us a summary of where we need to prioritize our efforts? If I understand correctly, here's where we are:

  • Basic articles: 12 in rotation, exceeds the baseline of 10.
  • Images: unknown number in rotation, but plenty of high quality material for featured candidacy.
  • DYK: 21? 24? more than enough, with plenty of accompanying images
  • Biography/Fiction: Here's the sticking point, right?
  • Navigation: FWIW could we make it easier for a portal visitor to navigate into project space?

DurovaCharge! 21:13, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Current standing of portal
  • (25) Selected pictures, all free-use, w/ link to an associated article.
  • (12) Selected articles, all of "B-class" or higher, all w/ associated free-use image.
  • (7) sets of (3) WP:DYK hooks, all had previously appeared at T:DYK, all with one associated free-use image.
Things that still need some work
  1. Biography/Fiction -- Personally I'd rather go with a "Selected biography" section, start it with the 4 selections, above, and get them all up to at least "B" status. Then, we'd only need 6 more... Cirt (talk) 21:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  2. Associated Wikimedia -- Currently is using Template:WikimediaForPortals, I'd rather have it have its own subpage to transclude, I can work on this myself, and I'll model it after other Featured Portals, not too hard to do, just a matter of getting to it. Cirt (talk) 21:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  3. Main topics -- Nice, but a little skimpy, consider other versions from other Featured Portals. For example, Portal:Sustainable development. Cirt (talk) 21:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  4. Things you can do -- Also a bit skimpy, I could reformat this modeling after other Featured Portals, like Portal:Comedy and Portal:Sustainable development. Cirt (talk) 21:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  5. WikiProjects -- Looks sort of oddly formatted, could use some minor tweaking, modeling it after other Featured Portals. Cirt (talk) 21:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  6. Selected quote -- Not required, but I'd like to add this section, I think we could find at least 10 quotes from individuals with both existing Wikipedia articles and with free-use photos. See for example Featured Portal, Portal:Television, for an idea. Cirt (talk) 21:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Those are some thoughts going forward. The big hangup is the "Selected biography" section, the other stuff shouldn't take too long at all really. Cirt (talk) 21:25, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

I should be able to work on some of those. Maybe I'll begin with converting some of the fiction entries into selected quotes. The biography issue is really going to bite. We'd better start with a list of what we've got and see what we can build upon. DurovaCharge! 22:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
I'd rather have the "Selected quotes" be from real people, ideally, instead of fiction. I'll set up a "Selected quote" section, so you see what I mean. Cirt (talk) 22:13, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Selected quotes

Biography discussion threads have been moved to Portal talk:Textile Arts/Selected biography. Cirt (talk) 19:58, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

DYK

The new lead article textile arts made DYK on 15 February. I've self-assessed it as start class; would appreciate someone other than me determining if it's ready for B-class. - PKM (talk) 03:32, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Done, added to a new set of potential 3 at Portal:Textile Arts/DYK. Cirt (talk) 05:47, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure that there are at least a couple more relevant DYKs, if someone wanted to go scouring the older archives at WP:Recent additions... Cirt (talk) 16:06, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Knitta was DYK on 28 Dec 2007. That's one! - PKM (talk) 17:06, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Done, added that one, thanks. Cirt (talk) 17:11, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
That was fast!
Textile preservation on 19 June 2007. - PKM (talk) 17:13, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Done, that completes the most recent set of 3 (7th), for 21 hooks total. Cirt (talk) 17:17, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

DYK Next round

I just found Kasuti and tagged it for our project. DYK 26 April 2007. - PKM (talk) 17:26, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I moved one around so each set has an image, 2 more to complete an 8th set of 3. Cirt (talk) 17:33, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

More DYK

Slip (needlework) appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know? column on 28 February 2008. - PKM (talk) 23:48, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Done, has been added to the portal. Cirt (talk) 23:50, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
1 more needed to complete the lastest 8th set of 3. Cirt (talk) 23:51, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Where do we stand? (redux)

I did some work on other parts of the portal recently, and once we have (at least) 10 bios in the "Selected biography" section that are of "B" class or better, well-sourced with a good WP:LEAD, and preferably an accompanying free-use image, this portal will be more than ready for a 2nd WP:PPREV (just to double check things) and then WP:FPORTC in short order. Cirt (talk) 01:41, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Okay. I've expanded the to-do list for the portal and will go to work on biographies. Assume as a starting point that I will not be able to bring us up to 10 B-class biographies all by myself; I've been recruiting all the help I can get with that. DurovaCharge! 21:25, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Notes on what to put into rotation

Articles

  1. Cochineal
  2. History of silk
  3. Knitta
I added this one because it has a free-use image and it is WP:GA class, after all, but the lede could still stand to be expanded a bit, both for the article itself, and for the "blurb" for appearance in the portal. Not a big priority issue, just thought I'd note that here. Cirt (talk) 16:01, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
  4. Palestinian costumes
  5. Navajo rug
  6. Knitting
  7. Smocking
Can't go with this one, it's only "Start" class, not very well sourced, not that great for a portal selection. WP:LEAD is a tad bit short too. Cirt (talk) 18:54, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
I'll try to expand this. DurovaCharge! 01:20, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Added some. Might still be too short? DurovaCharge! 08:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Added this one. Cirt (talk) 22:46, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
  8. Tyrian purple
  9. Textile preservation
  10. Weaving
  11. Wool
Can't really use this one, the WP:LEAD is way too short, and it's not very well sourced either. Cirt (talk) 18:52, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
  12. Indigo dye
Nice image, but again, the WP:LEAD would have to be about double its current size for this to work well in the portal. Cirt (talk) 18:55, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
  13. Pleat
    B-class, well-sourced - PKM (talk) 05:27, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
B-class, good sourcing, but the WP:LEAD of the article is way too short, would have to be about double current size for a good portal addition. Cirt (talk) 06:24, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
  14. Darning
Currently start-class (Durova, do you think this is ready to bump up to B-class, or still too short?) - PKM (talk) 05:35, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
According to Cirt, we're okay with ten of these. Could you add to the fictional works further down, or to the portal intro? DurovaCharge! 05:49, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
We only have 8 that Cirt has accepted. - PKM (talk) 22:13, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
  15. Bayeux Tapestry
B-class, nice image, could work, but the WP:LEAD could be expanded a tad more. Cirt (talk) 16:30, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  16. Hemp
  17. Goldwork (embroidery)
  18. Luddite
Adding four more for consideration. DurovaCharge! 09:01, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
  19. Valois Tapestries
I've just upgraded this to B-class (was still marked as a stub from the day I started it before it made DYK). I think the WP:LEAD is long enough? - PKM (talk) 17:10, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Added this one. Cirt (talk) 22:46, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
  20. Baldachin
I just tagged this for our project and rated it B-class. - PKM (talk) 19:44, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Added. Cirt (talk) 23:21, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Images

Note

Images discussion has been moved to Portal talk:Textile Arts/Selected picture. Cirt (talk) 19:11, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Images

Are there accompanying articles that could be highlighted/go along with the above images, i.e. to incorporate a brief bit from those articles' leads for the text that will go along w/ each Selected picture? Cirt (talk) 16:17, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I'll write up some description text; some of the related articles are in poor condition. What I've been doing overnight is downloading and restoring some more high quality graphic files from the Library of Congress. That's one area where I can raise the quality on the material pretty quickly. DurovaCharge! 23:08, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Best way to retrieve them in all their glory is from DIFFs to T:DYK, or the WP:Recent additions archives. Cirt (talk) 10:27, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Weaving

I would like to draw your attention to the following DYK that appeared on Main Page on 28 November 2007:

- P.K.Niyogi (talk) 01:11, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the heads up. :) DurovaCharge! 04:40, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Added that hook into portal rotation. Cirt (talk) 01:04, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Growing the portal

Is there any general best practice around maximum numbers of items in rotation in the portal? Would 50 selected pictures be too many? Or 20 bios (if we had them)? - PKM (talk) 18:11, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Nope. Portal:Film has a bunch more in a few subsections. Cirt (talk) 18:12, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

New DYK

Swift (textiles) was recently featured, and the articles Mechlin lace, Valenciennes lace, Velcro and Brussels lace have been nominated. The combined hook for Mechlin and Valenciennes lace has been approved, as has that of velcro. Once I can think of a halfway decent hook, Chantilly lace will be nominated too. Loggie (talk) 20:43, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

I think I already added some of those, but I will double check. Cirt (talk) 20:47, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
So, Velcro went up on May 15th, 2008 along with a combined Mechlin lace and Valenciennes lace. Brussels lace was May 17th, 2008; Chantilly lace May 19th, 2008. Blonde lace just went up today, and Antwerp lace has been nominated. Loggie (talk) 16:05, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh boy, lots to work on, okay, will get on it, thanks. Cirt (talk) 20:38, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Thank-you for doing this. Loggie (talk) 22:07, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Done, thanks for the notices. Cirt (talk) 01:14, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

In an attempt to keep you busy, Bucks point lace also went up, and I have nominated three more: Binche lace, torchon lace and nap (textile). Samite also was a DYK recently, but I can't claim credit for that one. Loggie (talk) 06:16, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Preferably tell me in the future only about those after they have successfully gone up at T:DYK, that will make things much easier to keep track of. Thanks again so much for doing this. Cirt (talk) 06:20, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Done, added Samite and Bucks point lace. Cirt (talk) 06:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Weaving

I have started some clean up on our fundamental topic weaving, but it shows the results of creation by tomany hands over a long time; there is much repetition, rather a bit of poor writing, repeated wikilinks, and unevenness of tone and approach. It also needs serious referencing.

I don't think we have enough active participants to make a formal collaboration of the month, but informally, I'd appreciate help from anyone interested. - PKM (talk) 19:24, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Updating the portal

Time for some fresh content. I have added the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries to the Selected Picture rotation and English embroidery to Selected Article. - PKM (talk) 04:01, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! Cirt (talk) 04:05, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Per Cirt's request, I have moved Embroidery and English embroidery from the Selected Article rotation as they have not been rated. It would be good if someone would rate these. I'll ask around. - PKM (talk) 05:46, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks PKM (talk · contribs). Cirt (talk) 02:53, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Fingerweaving

I'd like to add this 1825 portrait of David Vann of the Cherokee Nation to our selected picture rotation with links to the article fingerweaving. Thoughts? - PKM (talk) 02:51, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Sounds fine to me. Cirt (talk) 02:53, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Done. - PKM (talk) 05:56, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Updating the portal

I have added the featured picture File:Table-cloth 2008-1.jpg to both the quality content section and the selected picture rotation. (It is also an English Wikipedia Picture of the Day for 7 May 2009.)

There is also a bot identifying former "Did You Know?" items - apparently damask was a DYK back in 2004. Does anyone see an issue adding these to the DYK rotation? (I am going to deal with the lack of references on damask.) - PKM (talk) 20:12, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the update. Do you have more information, link(s) about this bot? Cirt (talk) 20:14, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
The DYKHousekeepingBot is described here.- PKM (talk) 02:39, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
How did you utilize the bot, to find that article damask? Cirt (talk) 00:16, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
I didn't; I had talk:Damask on my watch list and the bot edit showed up on my list as "(Article appeared on DYK on 7 December 2004, adding {{dyktalk}})". I assume damask just happened to be one of the edits in the test run of the bot. - PKM (talk) 02:36, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Ah wow, neat! Thanks, Cirt (talk) 02:47, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

DYK

Note to self/the group mind, we should add Shed (weaving) to the DYK section of the portal. I'll do it when I get a chance if no one beats me to it...can't do it tonight. - PKM (talk) 03:51, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

I think someone already added Pill (textile), but there is also Reed (weaving) that should be added, and nominated for DYK are a combined hook with Moire (fabric), calendering and grosgrain (though grosgrain is only a 4.7 expansion, so I'm not sure it will be used) and selvage has also been nominated. Loggie (talk) 12:32, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the heades-up on those! - PKM (talk) 03:08, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Group 21 is now in rotation, and Group 22 is started with Shed (weaving). I'll keep an eye on your talk page to watch out for these. Great work! - PKM (talk) 03:24, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Group 22 is live. Kudos to Loggie, who has contributed four textile arts-related DYKS, one of them a triple, in the last two weeks. - PKM (talk)

Another biography

We're very short of biographies; I'd like to add Lily Yeats which I have just expanded and nominated for DYK. Any objections? - PKM (talk) 03:34, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Is it B-class or higher in quality? Cirt (talk) 03:41, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Someone other than me would need to rate it.  :-)
But I suspect it's a Start. - PKM (talk) 01:47, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Another article

I have added English embroidery to the article rotation; it has been assessed B-class. - PKM (talk) 01:08, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. -- Cirt (talk) 01:12, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

I have assessed Beauvais Tapestry as B-class and added it to the article rotation. - PKM (talk) 02:45, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Remember to wikilink the bolded article name, in the blurb text. -- Cirt (talk) 02:46, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Oops, thanks for fixing that! - PKM (talk) 01:58, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
No worries, -- Cirt (talk) 01:59, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

New template

I have made and deployed a new template {{Tapestry}} to match our others. - PKM (talk) 02:35, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

DYK to use

There is a DYK in this set that is relevant. Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 05:58, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, Cirt! I missed that one; it's queued up for the next batch now. I have been doing a massive assessment run-through, and found several DYKs for our portal, including thimble from 2004, and my Holy Grail tapestries was on DYK last night. I have added batches 24 and 25 to the rotation. - PKM (talk) 18:01, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Assessments

I have assessed all but three unassessed textile arts articles - of the three remaining, I wrote 2 and was involved in a small dispute over another, so someone else will have to assess those.

We could use expert review of the tons of "people" articles, especially those involved in knitting and quilting where I am far from an expert. Many of these may not meet Notability guidelines.

As a project standard, I would suggest that people rated Mid or higher importance should be added to the appropriate navigation templates, and those rated Low should not, but I would like the opinions of others. When in doubt, I have tended to rate people and things lower rather than higher. - PKM (talk) 21:10, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Bronwyn Bancroft

Bronwyn Bancroft is a textile designer, and I have tagged her for our project, which gives us our second FA. I have added her to the Bios section and updated the FA list on the portal. - PKM (talk) 17:03, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

New DYK

Textiles of Mexico. -- Cirt (talk) 20:01, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, Cirt! Adding in...- PKM (talk) 02:18, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
