Please note that it is fairly well established that future sporting events can have their own articles. The criteria for writing about future events is that the article should be informative. These articles are too long[edit]

--Do we really need to have this much information included? Like under the UTEP game, I don't give a hoot about the "Pickaxe" stuff, I think you should talk about what happened in the game. These articles (2005–2008 Texas Longhorn season(s)) are all obnoxiously too long. Thanks for the feedback. I think these details are important. To many fans, the ceremony and traditions of college football is what sets it apart from most other sports. Space is not a consideration on Wikipedia since Wikipedia is not paper. Also, we will probably eventually split more of the game summaries into their own articles. That is what we did with the 2005 Texas Longhorns article, which is recognized as a Featured Article on Wikipedia. We have already done it with 2008 Texas vs. Oklahoma football game as well. Longhorn vs. Longhorns[edit]

Shouldn't these UT football seasons be "Longhorns" not "Longhorn"? Here is my reasoning:

Consistency: This would be in keeping with the "Texas Longhorns football" article, the "Texas Longhorns" athletics article, Texas Longhorns men's basketball, other UT sports articles (women's bball, baseball, volleyball), and all the basketball seasons format. All of those use the plural "Longhorns". Also, all other colleges' sports-related articles use the plural of the teams' nicknames (not counting team nicknames that are actually singular like Stanford Cardinal, Tulsa Golden Hurricane, etc.).
Semantics: I can sort of see why someone would use Longhorn (as in "this Longhorn football team"), but in the context (as in "the 2008 Texas Longhorns football team"), it doesn't sound correct in the singular. I believe in this context, that the plural is actually the correct form.

Hi Strikehold, thanks for your suggestion. When I started the 2005 Texas Longhorn football team article, it was the first or one of the first articles on a particular sports season. So, there was no precedent on Wikipedia. I settled on the singular form because:

It seemed to me UT used the singular form a little more often
To my ear, the singular sounds a little better. In my way of thinking, "Longhorn" is being used as an adjective to modify "team". In English, it seems like we typically use the singular form when the word is being used as an adjective (E.g. "a 8 once bottle", "a 50-yard punt", "30-degree weather", "Shriner Hospital", "Christian center", etc.)

I know that a lot of other Wikipedia articles have gone with the plural form. I don't have a strong opinion either way. I look forward to hearing other opinions. Best, Johntex\^talk 02:22, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plural is generally used when referring to nearly any sports team I can think, and the texas website seems to use it predominantly (texassports.com). Looking at the category page for the 2008 season, this is the only article not using the plural. I vote to move it. Ryan2845 (talk) 03:33, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, as it doesn't seem that Johntex is opposed, I am going to go ahead and move this, as well as all the other UT football season articles to the plural form of the title (with redirects from the singular titles), in the name of consistency across WikiProject College Football.
