Million Dollar Promo[edit]

I'm just wondering why the million dollar promotion is not mentioned whatsoever in this article? As I remember, it was a major draw for people to purchase the game (though not necessarily the only reason they did so) and it was cancelled as Majesco began their financial spiral. 66.41.67.211 10:40, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orson Scott Card's comments on Advent[edit]

I'm not certain where it would be appropriate to add this to the article, but OSC has made a few comments on his site which are certainly enlightening.

First, he indicates here that he believes the publisher rushed the game, causing it to fail (as anyone familiar with the game industry will understand):

"There were lots of expectations before Advent Rising came out, but it was a premature release with a buggy implementation on some platforms, which is death to a game. You can't rave about it to your friends if it keeps crashing or locking up. Which is a shame, because the design was great, it LOOKED great, and if the publisher had just waited a little longer, it could have been released in perfect shape. I think then it would have been a smash hit."

(This echoes personal experience with the problems in the game, as well as some of the reviews I have read, BTW.)

He also states elsewhere that Donald Mustard is currently working on another project involving OSC:

"He's working on a project entitled "Empire" with a novel being written by ... um ... me.

As to Advent, I hope it does NOT disappear ... but for now, Mustard has moved on; it may be that at some future date it will be retrieved, but encumbered as it is right now, I doubt it will be soon - or if it IS revived, it will be by somebody else, which would be, I think, unfortunate. I speak of the future purely from my own speculations, however, not being privy to anyone's plans."

How come nowhere in the article nothing is mentioned about how the game failed critically?

What movie was it akin too?

Similar games?[edit]

Other games articles on wiki have lists of similar games. It'd be nice if such a list appeared for AR. I'd start it, but I'm not familiar with too many such games - hence why I'd like a list :)

BTW - it's not similar to any specific movie, the descriptor refers to it as being similar to a TYPE of movie.

Should it?[edit]

Should the name of the Aurelian capital cit be added? As the game states several times that the name is Arnis, as well as the fact that the minor character Soron should be added, as he has some small storyline significance.

Unclear connection to Ender's Game[edit]

* Torn - Commander of the human forces in Bahr Han City. Torn believes that the Seekers are another species of the buggers seen in Ender's Game.

Card's influences are noticeable in the terminology which has been carried over from Ender's Game. The terms "vids," "Buggers," and "ansible" are all references from his critically acclaimed novels (though the term ansible was coined by Ursula K. Le Guin, and was not actually added to the script by Card himself, but by Donald Mustard).

Could someone familiar with Advent Rising and Ender's Game clarify the nature of the connection between the two? Are they intended to take place within the same fictional universe, or do the characters in Advent Rising mention the Buggers as if they knew that they were fictional characters?
