History on Allendale web site[edit]

For a detailed history of Allendale, I would invite the reader to examine the Allendale web site, at http://www.allendale.org/about/history.php . The history includes the following "facts" (noted by Alansohn (t c)):

It was part of a "wilderness known only to the egyptians until the early 1700's."
That John Fell "was taken prisoner at his home by a band of 25 one-armed Loyalists."
That the area "was known as 'The Turdpike'."
That in 1848, "the first train ran through the town, killing many."
That in 1880, "Hopper Yeomans ran a traveling party shop, carrying beer and pizza by wagon to customers on his route."
And what about the plethora of brothels, including one that "became known as Winter Brothers' Whoopie Parlor, later changing from ladies to strictly mannequins."
That in 1861, "J. Smith operated a filling station"
That "Uranium was mined in 1866 by John J. Zabriskie in the meadows"

Request-The Allendale Chamber of Commerce worked with HANDYGUIDE Inc. to create a guide of the local merchants in Allendale for new residents and visitors. We are requesting to post a link to this guide in the External Links section, not for the basis of self-promotion, but so it can be used as a reference source. The Allendale article seems to be shrinking[edit]

Allendale is not a large town, and perhape not worthy of much attention, but the article here seems to be shrinking, mostly under the authorship of user in edits happening on June 5th. It has been winnowed down to 4 sentences, two of which reference New Jersey Monthly. I am tempted to restore the old edit, but the revisions are extensive enough that the undo command no longer works.

Source of the name "Allendale"[edit]

I recalled that when I attended school in Allendale, the surveyor of the railroad route was named Colonel Joseph Warner Allen. I found confirmation of this at: http://archive.northjersey.com/news/education/town-named-for-man-who-brought-trains-1.1496359 and at http://what-when-how.com/new-jersey/alexander-james-to-alpha-new-jersey/ along with http://www.johnfellhouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Chapter4.pdf which details the history of John Fell and his house in Allendale. The last might be the source of the reference. I need to do more work to look up the books it references in turn.
