X6 Dance Collective[edit]

X6 Dance Collective (who published a magazine called New Dance) do not have Wikipedia entries for some reason. Only last night they came together again (less one member Maedée Duprès) to discuss the period at an event at Chisenhale Dance Space in East london. The main members of X6 Dance Collective were: Emilyn Claid, Fergus Early, Jacky Lansley, Mary Prestidge and Maedée Duprès but many dozens of people made events in the old tea warehouse that was X Block at Butler's Wharf. X6 was the top floor reached by old wooden stairs and the whole of the top floor had a beautiful maple wood tongue and grooved floor that was perfect for new dance which entailed a lot of rolling about on the floor! Eminent guests included Steve Paxton and Lisa Nelson with their [contact improvisation] workshops and Mary Fulkerson with her 'release technique'. Sally Potter and Rose English were closely associated with the space. Anne Bean had a studio in Butler's Wharf and spoke last night. Many of the users of the space used co-counselling as a tool for liberation (which might be considered as the underlying purpose of much of the experimental activity in that period). Feminism was a powerful influence. There were also close network associations with the London Film-Makers' Co-op (esp. Annabel Nicholson) and the London Musicians Collective (esp. Paul Burwell) I write as someone who used the space and helped put together New Dance Magazine for a year or two.
