Versions[edit]

The versions section should be changed to reflect each title separately, and the platforms for which it has been released, along with release dates (multiple if different per platform).

There's a lot of good information for previous versions on the MobyGames site linked in the External Links section. Can we reference any of that without breaking any rules? --ZeroWiki 166.33.94.6 14:02, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The box on the side incorrectly only notes MS-DOS as the platform, although the text is more specific that it is widely multiplatform across all its versions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Santaduck (talkcontribs)

Is the 10th Edition equivalent to a chessmaster 10000? so it's the one after 9000 right? 70.111.251.203 02:10, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. --ZeroOne 12:08, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

well, no not really. chessmaster got bored of 4000 5000 6000 9000 so they put up 10th edition even thought it isnt even the 10th edition (count it). i play chessmaster 10th edition. its good. splitz is good too... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dark wizzie1 (talkcontribs) 21 September 2006

Well, yeah, in the sense that the series started with Chessmaster 2000, it's the ninth edition. And if you count the games listed at MobyGames, you get the result that it is the thirteenth edition. But the "10th Edition" still is the one after Chessmaster 9000, which was the point. --ZeroOne 14:31, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

yes. rite. oh and bat the 10h edition sounds good. you should listen to the oening music:) anyone here likes chessmaster10th edition?I LOVE IT:) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dark wizzie1 (talkcontribs) 23 September 2006

Kinda makes you wonder what kind of people they have working at Ubisoft.

"Sir, we're all finished. Chessmaster 10,000 is ready to ship out."

"Wait a second. I don't like that title. Chessmaster 10,000 doesn't sound very good."

"Well, we can use a different title. How about Chessmaster 10? Or maybe Chessmaster 10K? We could use a Roman numeral and call it Chessmaster X. What about Chessmaster 2004?"

"No, none of those are any good. Wait, I've got it! We'll call it Chessmaster 10th Edition."

"But sir, the first game in the series was Chessmaster 2000."

"Right."

"Which means that this new game is the ninth game in the series."

"Yep."

"So it's the 9th edition, not the 10th edition."

"What's your point?"

Update[edit]

There are almost no references on the new ch10. I think the article should reformed.--GrWikiMan 18:00, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Just for the heck of it, will anyone care to check the website and see what happened? I simply don't have the time. ~user:orngjce223how am I typing? 19:44, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-Chessmaster Chessmaster?[edit]

Searching for "chessmaster" on the World of Spectrum website [1] gets results for two ZX Spectrum games: The Chessmaster 2000 and a game titled Chess Master. This second game was published by a company called Serin Software in 1984, two years before the first edition of Chessmaster was published. Interesting that lawyers never got involved after the Chessmaster games got popular. DT29 06:33, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 07:56, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of amateur computer chess enthusiasts?[edit]

"The personality feature has inspired many amateur computer chess enthusiasts to attempt to find more optimum personalities. Notable among these are Kurt Utzinger, Wilhelm Hudetz, Jason Kent, Dom Leste, Milorad Madjar, Graham Banks and Ray Banks." I don't mean any offense to these guys, but I question how notable are these computer chess enthusiasts outside of their own small group? Tony75 (talk) 02:57, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree; these names don't add anything to the article. The second sentence of your quote is now deleted. GregorB (talk) 17:27, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Graham and Ray are co-founders of the CCRL rating lists. 125.236.132.139 (talk) 00:22, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Web vs. Chessmaster 8000[edit]

My copy of Chessmaster 9000 includes the game "The Web vs. Chessmaster 8000." I was planning on adding it to the "notable games" section, but apparently it isn't quite so notable because I can hardly find anything about it on the net; just some throwaway references on message boards. I'm sure it's not quite as notable as Kasparov vs. the World or Larry Christiansen vs. Chessmaster 9000, but it's amazing how little record I can find of it, given the organizing and publicity required for these kinds of matches. It's like it never even happened. The year is given as 2001, but the PGN doesn't give a location. (The game select screen gives the location as "Discovery 1", but this is a mistake -- "Discovery 1" is the location of the game between Frank Poole and HAL 9000 from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is also included in Chessmaster.) Below I've posted the move list of the game (which ended in draw by agreement), in case it can be of any help.

Merge proposal[edit]

Chessmaster: The Art of Learning has been proposed to be merged with this article.

Support the merger, as long as there is a redirect from Chessmaster: The Art of Learning.--DThomsen8 (talk) 11:29, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support. SunCreator (talk) 00:06, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support The Art of Learning page adds nothing, and all the information is available on this page too. Arnie Side (talk) 20:45, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was proposed over a month ago and no one disagrees with the merger, so I'm doing it. Bubba73 (the argument clinic), 20:52, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The merge was probably a good idea but now there is image and info box overload on the page. I can't see the benefit of having the second infobox tied in with the two or three line section. 3 screenshots (2 from the same edition, none of them the latest) seems a bit excessive given the length of the article and it isn't clear what critical commentary they're providing.--Crossmr (talk) 11:49, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chessmaster Challenger... versions...[edit]

No mention of the different versions: Chessmaster Challenger available from http://store.steampowered.com/app/37200/ _looks_ to be a cut down version of the latest in the Chessmaster Grandmaster etc series?... 122.148.41.172 (talk) 12:02, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New publisher[edit]

Hello, I heard Ubisoft is no longer publishing Chessmaster and it has been taken over by a new company. Does anyone know who that would be? Thanks JunoBeach (talk) 14:58, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is no new company, it's retired and unavailable now. From Chris @ Ubisoft Support, Dec 22, 2014 at 04:47 PM EST: "The Chessmaster series unfortunately is out of publication and the ability to purchase the game is now unavailable. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused." Caswick 15:44, 24 December 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caswick (talkcontribs)

There is no public URL for the ticket reference number 01881143 where this response is registered, therefore, it's original research and I can't put it on the main page. --Caswick 15:50, 24 December 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caswick (talkcontribs)

Sales Figures Lack Substantiation[edit]

Hi, the article claims that "It is the best-selling chess franchise in history, with more than five million units sold as of 2002." however the footnote provides no support for these assertions. Do you think I should remove them? I looked back at earlier versions of the footnote-referenced page at archive.org and couldn't find any support for it there either.
