personal life

The para about Chris Rock’s disability has correct sources but the content is factually wrong. Suggest to change to:

On September 18,2020, Chris publicly revealed that he was diagnosed with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder. A nine-hour battery of cognitive tests conducted earlier this year made doctors identify the disorder, or NLD, in Chris Rock. At 55, the comedian understood that he has difficulty understanding non-verbal signals and ends up interpreting many things in the literal sense.[73] [74] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.153.43.164 (talk) 20:27, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

Fired?

Where is the evidence that Rock was fired from SNL for drug use?

He wasn't; he left of his own accord to join In Living Color before the show was abruptly canceled that season. BabuBhatt 05:05, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Controversy

Why is there a controversy section here? The stuff from Never Scared never drew any fire, please provide a source for that because comedians say a lot of outlandish things. The Academy Awards thing doesn't seem like much controversy, nor does his parody of Kanye West seem like controversy. I'm considering removing the whole section since it's rather pointless.

Who had mostly forgotten the remark

How does the author know what the telivision audience forgot with regard to Sean Penn/Chris Rocks remarks at the 77th Oscars. Indeed how does the author know that Rock was one of the 'Preeminent' comic minds of his generation (thats definately arguable but here it is presented as a given).

This is one more example of why Wikipedia really wont ever be a serious academic tool.......Adam777 22:57, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

I disagree, wikipedia is serious that is all. Volt M 22:14, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I changed the sentence and removed the phrase "to the surprise of a television audience that had mostly forgotten the remark" - that is just conjecture, the author has no way of knowing if the TV audience was surprised or indeed what they had or had not forgotten. Adam777 15:10, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Birth date?

IMDB says he was born in 1965, but here it says 1967. Which is right? -- 65.93.81.198 07:09, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I have a book written and autographed by Chris Rock....Rock This! He claims to have been born on February 5, 1966 a few times in the book. Few people forget the year in which they are born. Quit saying it's 1965. I'll even scan one of the pages claiming this if i have to.please do.-wikirockroll

Do we have a clear source for this information? 1965 and 1966 seem to be distributed evenly across the internet. Hotwine8 01:41, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
The 1965 date might stem from the fact that on Never Scared, which was recorded in March 2004 -- ie. after his birthday -- he starts off his "Rap Standup" segment by stating "now I'm 39, right". That would make his date of birth 1965. But yeah, there are other equally reputable sources claiming different things... IMDB says 1965, AOL's biography says 1966, Allmusic says 196? ... -/- Warren 02:19, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
I have the book... and it does in fact claim he was born in 1966 once, but then there's the issues with him saying otherwise, as well. I was going to propose we go with 1965, seeing as he actually said he was 39 in March of 2004, but now I'm hearing his spoken word contradict this. Perhaps he wants to create some confusion?Bryanedp9 07:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Questionable passage in Comedic style section

A tagged passage in the Comedic style section reads:

"Rock is uncomfortable with the idea of being seen as a larger than life figure in standup comedy as opposed to some of his heroes like Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy or Richard Pryor; when pressed for a statement during an interview with Playboy, he hesitated and finally responded: "I talked about race differently. I'll go that far".

What does this mean? When pressed for a statement? A statement regarding what? Shouldn't the passage indicate what the question was that he was responding to? "Statement", by itself, doesn't mean anything. Without the question, the answer he gives about talking about race differently is completely decontextualized, and makes no sense. And what does his discomfort with being seen as larger-than-life have to do with his comedic style? Nightscream 02:33, 11 February 2008

Excellent point; I tried to clarify what the original author appears to have meant -- that becoming famous obliged Rock to fill an "ethnic spokesperson" role with which he was uncomfortable; it's a point I've heard Rock discuss in interviews, and one I've heard fellow standup David Chappelle make as well. Zoidbergmd (talk) 00:38, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Okay, but the passage needs to be clarified so that the contextual relevance of the answer he gave to the point you explained above is clear. No offense, but as it stands now, the passage makes little sense. In addition, you have to cite the exact source. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 04:50, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Done. My aim had been to retain the author's original language, but his point did seem to dart around and then dropped down the rabbit hole. I did, however, source the original Playboy quote; it came from an interview in the September, 1999 issue—conducted by David Rensin, his co-author on the memoir. Zoidbergmd (talk) 10:16, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Verification

Added verification/citations for the "Recurring SNL Characters" and "Celebrity Impersonations" sections; all entries are verifiable through the (fairly complete) site "Saturday Night Live Transcripts" (http://snltranscripts.jt.org/). Zoidbergmd (talk) 17:06, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for responding to the citation tags. However, there are a few problems. The citation given for the recurring characters does not establish that Nat X was a recurring character. It merely is a transcript from one episode in which Nat appeared, which does not indicate his recurring status. Second, no citations are given for the others. Instead, you wrote in the citation, "The rest of the characters from the "Recurring Characters" section may be found on the site as well". This is not an acceptable citation. All of the individual characters asserted in that section need to be sourced. If they're found elsewhere on that site, then the urls have to be given, and the webpages must establish their recurring status as well. Lastly, the source you provided for the Celebrity impersonations section is simply a reiteration of the source you provided for the Recurring section, and makes no mention of Idi Amin, or any of the Impersonations, giving only the same explanation about them being supported elsewhere on the site, to which I reiterate the same answer. Nightscream (talk) 05:20, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
"Celebrity Impressions" Sourced and verified every impression; no record of a "Mike Tyson"—on the other hand, the writer had left out "Nipsey Russell" and 2 Live Crew's "Luther Campbell." Zoidbergmd (talk) 09:54, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
"Recurring Characters" Sourced and verified each of Rock's character. Whew. Zoidbergmd (talk) 10:18, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Sentence fragment in Live Earth section

The Live Earth section currently reads, "At the London Live Earth concert on July 7, 2007, which was broadcast live on the BBC. Before introducing the Red Hot Chili Peppers Rock called the crowd 'motherfuckers.'"

The period after "BBC" should be changed to a comma, and the "B" in "before" changed to lower case. I'd do it but I'm unable to edit the page.Chrysanthememe (talk) 11:39, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Strange statement on Kill the Messenger

At about 00:49:49 of his new special Kill The Messenger, Rock says that, in 1989, he worked washing dishes on a Red Lobster. He adds that he wasnt working his way to college nor to telling jokes. All right. The problem is that he appeared in Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987, and Get You Sucka in 1988. He was also, since 1986, doing stand-ups on Catch a Rising Star. Well, I guess that means he sort of "manipulated the truth" regarding his status in 1989 so as to appear to be some kind of working class hero. I feel that part was also important for him to counterpart the impression he left early on the show of being rich - the house that cost millions. Anyway, the main idea is that he wasn't a shrimp scrapper with no plans for future (and I quote him: "That was my life, 1989"). He was clearly aiming at a show business career. What do you think about that? Should it be included on the article? (TSA from Brazil - 11/06/2008 - sorry for any bad English)

Anecdotes that stand-up comedians relate in their routines should not be taken as literal accounts of their lives, as they tend to mix truth, hyperbole, and humor in order to entertain an audience. If he said this in an interview, though, that would be different. Nightscream (talk) 15:32, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
I dont know man, if he just wanted to tell a joke, he could have thrown another year, say, 1986, before he appeared in an hbo comedy special. He was 21 at that time and had probably dropped out of school already. There was nothing funny about the date itself, 1989. But I guess your explanation is good enough. (TSA from Brazil - 11/06/2008 - sorry for any bad English)

Phrasing

I understand the need to edit-protect, I really do: I grew up in the (still!) racially polarized southeastern US, believe me, I know. And Chris Rock, like many of our other best comic minds, says in-your-face stuff to make people think. This will often enrage the simple-minded, who don't like a mental challenge, and won't be forced to think about anything except the weather, the ballgame, and what's for dinner. But can WP really continue to include "...with whom he managed to hang out with" and "He was voted as the greatest..." anything. Even the teen magazines are better than that. Someone is going to have to spend some time with this article at some point, and my guess is that very few admins have that kind of time, or it would not be in the shape it's in. Just a thought. 69.171.187.15 (talk) 22:47, 16 February 2012 (UTC) Well, that and because Chris Rock is a wussy little prima-donna who'd start playing a whole deck of race cards if anyone actually dated to criticize him on here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.53.149.227 (talk) 00:48, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

The term "Black humor" is still there and I think it is fine. If an editor or reader clicks on "Black humor" he or she will see there is an unfortunate double-meaning: either 'dark humor' or "humor that makes light of subject matter usually considered [off limits]." Clearly, in today's political landscape, Chris Rock is strongly in that later category. -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 16:25, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

New NEWS today, for future editing

Chris Rock makes a lot of sense and will be noted!

Headline-1: Chris Rock tells white people to own the actions of their ancestors

QUOTE: "Chris Rock explained in a lengthy interview Sunday that he believes part of healing racial relations in America is by white people “owning” the actions of their ancestors. The black comedian told New York magazine’s Frank Rich that racial progress in America is “nonsense” and that the only thing that’s changed is white people aren’t as crazy as they used to be. “When we talk about race relations in America or racial progress, it’s all nonsense,” Mr. Rock said. “There are no race relations. White people were crazy. Now they’re not as crazy. To say that black people have made progress would be to say they deserve what happened to them before." -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 16:38, 7 December 2014 (UTC) -- PS: FYI for future editing. The 4-minute video is great. At the end, I believe he uses the term "Black humor".

Other than some apparent confusion in web biographies with the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that Chris Rock attended Stuyvesant High School. Some of these bios refer to a "Bedford-Stuyvesant High School", but there isn't any such school. There is a good chance that Rock attended Boys' High School or its successor Boys and Girls High School, which is located in Bed-Stuy. I tried several times to confirm the Stuyvesant connection, but to no avail. I'm going to remove the references, but if someone can cite a reasonbly authoritative source I'd love to be proved wrong. RossPatterson 17:08, 19 February 2050 (UTC)

Couldn't find the Stuyvesant High School reference anywhere else, and checked the Stuyvesant High School site, where he is not listed as an alumnus. On page 46 of his autobiography, "Rock This," Rock writes, "I got bused from Bed-Stuy to a white school in a poor white neighborhood: Gerretson Beach, Brooklyn. It was even worse than where I lived." Stuyvesant is in the Wall Street district of Manhattan. A fan site (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=14712) links to a 2001 New Republic article discussing Rock's unpleasant experiences at high school—the New Republic uses the spelling "Gerretsen" Beach. Errors in content

The page states that 'the couple live in....' in reference to his marriage - Chris Rock and his wife are now divorced and obviously don't live together anymore.

Also, the page states that Chris Rock's mother was a teacher and social worker 'for' the mentally handicapped - it would be better to say she worked 'with the mentally handicapped. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.193.50.95 (talk) 08:44, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

The "Personal life" section includes a paragraph that begins "On March 27, 2022, Rock was slapped by Will Smith ..." That should be deleted as it's already included in the "Academy Awards host" section and is nothing to do with his personal life. 86.173.116.27 (talk) 08:27, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Rock hosted the Academy Awards three times, in 2005, 2016 and in 2022. Prarthanashr04 (talk) 07:03, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

I came to flag this too: the lead currently states "Rock hosted the Academy Awards two times, in 2005 and in 2016." 86.173.116.27 (talk) 08:22, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
Not done: He presented but was not the host this year.—Bagumba (talk) 09:12, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Spelling error to be corrected - predominantly, not predominately. 2406:E003:1DDB:8D01:B98C:2A92:A9B9:5C7C (talk) 11:37, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Photo

The photo on this page looks very unflattering. 2605:8D80:521:4C76:F559:288E:EEC7:DC45 (talk) 00:43, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Problem is that we don't have many photos that we can use due to licensing. Of the four that are on the article, that one has proper licensing and is the best for the infobox. If another photo is taken with the proper licensing, it can be considered to replace the current image. --Super Goku V (talk) 09:07, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

How about any mention of the incident? 98.150.89.27 (talk) 20:54, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

It's in the 2022 ceremony subsection. Jim Michael (talk) 21:09, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

2016 oscars section referencing comments from 2012

The paragraph under the 2016 Awards subheading which discusses that years ceremony contains the following line:

Rock made a joke about the lack of challenges in voice acting, and was criticized by voice-actors Maurice LaMarche and Tara Strong.

But the sources indicate these comments date from 2012 when he presented an award at that years academys. I'm not sure if this line is notable enough to be moved to another section (views?) or if it should be removed entirely. Thoughts? FM talk to me | show contributions ]  15:09, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

The non-Twitter source looks to be just a blog, which might not be a reliable source. Searching doesn't bring up that many possible sources, so it might need to be cut anyways. (I do want to mention that there was a joke that was criticized if you feel that it should be added in place of this. It seems to have garnered more criticism than the voice acting joke. LA Times, NBC News, BBC, Vox) --Super Goku V (talk) 01:27, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

Personal life

Why is “everyday racism” in quotes in the Personal Life section and why does it say he “claims to experience” it rather than just saying “experiences”? 129.59.122.76 (talk) 17:41, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
