Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to 4 external links on Chris Smith (defensive back). Please take a moment to review my edit. Chris Smith (defensive back)Chris Smith (defensive back, born 1987) – avoid confusion with Chris Smith (safety) Joeykai (talk) 01:26, 25 December 2020 (UTC) Relisting. Ⓩⓟⓟⓘⓧ Talk 04:35, 1 January 2021 (UTC) Relisting. —Nnadigoodluck 21:13, 8 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose per WP:CONCISE and WP:NCPDAB. There are five Chris Smiths, all disambiguated by different positions, which is how most readers will know them. There's no reason to think year of birth will be known to most readers, and no reason to add it if the shorter title will just be a redirect back to this article. Just add a hatnote if necessary. Station1 (talk) 02:00, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move instead to Chris Smith (2010s defensive back) per WP:NCGRIDIRON. Decade is preferable to birth year, when possible. As an aside to non-American football fans, a safety is a specialized defensive back, which is the nominator's point about the current name being ambiguous and not WP:CONCISE enough.—Bagumba (talk) 20:40, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Although more helpful to readers than the original proposal, if someone were really confusing this Chris Smith with the safety who played until 2008, even adding "2010s" to the qualifier might not be enough help. For those people, a {{distinguish}} hatnote pointing to Chris Smith (safety) probably would be of more use. And if a hatnote were in place, there would be no need change this article's title in order to redirect Chris Smith (defensive back) to the dab page. Station1 (talk) 10:23, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
.. adding "2010s" to the qualifier might not be enough help: An article title is not a 100% guarantee a reader will get where they expected. Still, it's not an excuse to make it more ambiguous than it needs to be, and WP:NCGRIDIRON is a naming convention guideline. I don't understand the apprehension to following it.—Bagumba (talk) 17:38, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I completely agree. In fact, that's my point. The title is not a 100% guarantee a reader will get where they expected, no matter what we title it. Therefore we need a hatnote for that 100% guarantee. And if a hatnote is in place, shunting people to a dab page presents no benefit. Although, frankly, with only 3 views per day for both articles combined, it makes virtually no difference what we title it. Station1 (talk) 18:50, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
