Article Targeted for Deletion, Develop it![edit]

I oppose deleting this article. It describes a National Historic Landmark which makes it notable. This article was marked for deletion because it did not have references and was not developed. I added several references just now, but, please, other researchers, further develop this article, now! Actually there is further material in the references to report. And what is available from other external sources, that could be mentioned? But anyhow, the article now has references and it is notable, so it should not be deleted. doncram 00:10, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong house was identified as Denmark Vesey House?[edit]

A non-logged-in user just wrote into the article that the wrong site was identified, and that this NHL-designated building was almost certainly not the home of Denmark Vesey. Assuming that your information is correct, thanks! I for one am perfectly happy for the article to describe accurately that a mistake was made, but what is the reference for this? For a similar situation, the Florence Mills House in New York City, the wrong house was identified as the home of Florence Mills. In wikipedia we can describe the mistake, but there are references to point to in that case. I can find a reference to this info in a footnote in the book He Shall Go Out Free:The Lives of Denmark Vesey (at http://books.google.com/booksid=b1dA1_XQXogC&pg=PA83&lpg=PA83&dq=edward+turberg+beckie+johnson&source=web&ots=B9jR2sg99x&sig=3YRTYTa91RVDWhXBkNk0YlpOJtg&hl=en ) on Google books on pg 83. It references the Denmark Vesey House File at SCDAH. I can't find the document at SCDAH. I'm not sure that referencing a footnote in another book is appropriate.Lvklock (talk) 00:40, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The link to the book doesn't work for me. Does it describe that the wrong house was landmarked? That would be very helpful.

Thank you to same or different non-logged in user who recently added references about the wrong house being landmarked. I notice that the NRHP Inventory/Nomination for the site was written by Lynne Gomez Graves, the same historian who also wrote the Florence Mills House nomination. Graves was associated with the Afro-American Bicentennial Commission or something late that. That organization had an agenda, just like most other nominees of NHLs or NRHPs do, but it seems in these cases to have led to an incorrect conclusion. I don't want to be too judgmental, as it must be difficult to pin down what is correct information. However, the later research in the Florence Mills House case is convincing to me, and likewise I expect the memos in the SC DAH files about the Denmark Vesey House case are probably also definitive that a mistake was made. Hmm, in the Florence Mills House case, the NPS did not outright apologize, but they do characterize in their webpage that it is the house "formerly believed to be home of Florence Mills" or something like that. doncram (talk) 18:59, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
