HABS pics for John Gridley House and in general

Hey, great u'r going to upload some HABS pics. I just cut and pasted in my HABS external link info, into the John Gridley House article which you created, by the way. To actually upload a HABS pic, the general process i follow is:

1. select which HABS pic i want
2. download to my computer the highest resolution version available of that pic
3. open the pic in picture editing software (i use Microsoft Office Picture Manager)
4. edit the pic to crop out the ugly borders present in almost all HABS images, which are not part of the photographer's work. Also I crop the pic to remove any caption info that is also not part of the photo (I don't see any such captions in the John Gridley House HABS pics though). I will capture any such caption text in the description area for the uploaded file
5. save the pic with a descriptive name like, for the doorway pic that is 4th one available there, "JohnGridleyHouse_HABS NY 34-SYRA 4-4 cropped.jpg". Note i use "cropped" in the filename.
6. upload the pic to commons like other pics. Hopefully being sure to add HABS photographer info, hopefully also a precise link both to the photo file URL and to the John Gridley House overall HABS webpage URL, etc. And I explain somehow that i was the person who cropped the file in 2009, while the photo was taken in 1970 or whenever. I usually have to go to a past example of my HABS uploading to find a model of the final description text.

Yikes, maybe the highest resolution is too big. For one, there are available: "Larger reference image (JPEG - 120K bytes)", and "Highest resolution image (TIFF - 15475K bytes)". Actually the JPEG is fine, while 15 meg is not worth it. Anyhow, you go to the picture, click on it, scroll down, see those two options, click on Larger reference image one. Then, for me to save it, i right-click on the image itself, and get options including one to "Save file as..." which i pick. doncram (talk) 04:43, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Armory Square and other Syracuse Historic Districts

Hi, yes i do have an opinion, that indeed it is fine and appropriate to include a list of any or all of the contributing properties of a historic district in its article. I myself have edited some historic district articles towards that goal, could round up some examples if u like.

You could even choose to create a table of them if you like, as in our list-articles of individual NRHPs. That could allow for you to add pics and descriptions if you like. Or just list them and describe them to whatever extent you like. Probably some individual contributing properties are notable enough for separate articles, if you choose to create them, but many should be just listed and described in the overall district article.

There's been recent discussion at wt:NRHP about creating a separate article for contributing properties or not. Or maybe i am thinking of discussion about creating separate articles for delisted properties or not, in which i think it was Elkman who pointed out that they can be listed but separate articles are not usually needed. doncram (talk) 01:10, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey, i wonder if you'd be willing to help develop this article, just created by Bmpowell, and put it up for DYK sharing a credit to him. I butted in on a conversation at User talk:Nyttend which moved to my talk page and then to Talk:Nicholas County High School. Bmp was very nice about being guided on some things and then doing a nice job with the new article, which is in pretty good shape already. It doesn't look like he has DYKs in his record, and the article looks relatively easy to put up for DYK. The sorry last one didn't have a street number on the list in the nom form. From the map, i now know it's 907, and i'm pretty sure it's not there any more. Walnut Park

As a an SU alum, I liked the Walnut Park article (and added it to the appropriate cat).

I suggest you go back in warmer weather and see about getting a picture of the whole district. If you can go up to the upper stories of Bird Library and shoot through the windows, you'll probably get the best possible picture with all the frat houses on the sides and the trees in the middle.

Also, it may be a long rectangle but it is not a linear park because it doesn't follow a road or watercourse or some sort of path.

See if you can find some good sourcing for when SU's spring block party was held there (from what I've found more recently via Google, it was moved indoors some time back, which makes sense because the weather at that time of year is awful about three-quarters of the time, but then it's a block party in name only). Woolaroc

I see you created the article Woolaroc Ranch Historic District and doncram redirected Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve to it. There is also an existing article Woolaroc. Can these articles be merged? I know nothing about Woolaroc, but it is a museum in Oklahoma that is linked to List of museums in Oklahoma, and I thought it best to have the most complete article. World Heritage Site lists

You mentioned "I realized that likely most of the redlinks had articles, so I started in EUR checking for articles and pipelinking them, but now I'm thinking that i should possibly be setting up redirects instead....which is the way you'd normally do it?". I would be sure to set up redirects first, so that anyone searching on the exact WHS title for a site will find it. Then, afterwards, if u want to put in pipelinks so the wikilink goes directly to the article instead of via the redirect, you can do that (but it is then not really necessary). doncram (talk) 16:46, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

canvassing

Perhaps you are unaware that the fact that the cited edit might be construed as canvassing was called to his attention at his talk page by Orlady, which I believe led to his comment here. I think a couple of isolated notes to specific individuals pales a little in comparison to your notices at Wikiproject Tennessee. If he had posted such notices at WP:NRHP, that would be comparable, and I would imagine that was a temptation. NRHP progress

Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/ProgressNRHPlistsByState looks good. Sure, take out Boston, it doesn't make sense to keep it in, if tallying by the number of counties (I think it is in all in one county, Suffolk, which also has non-Boston elements).

So far, it is a bit hard to see where work needs to be done, as you have to scroll through a lot already done and compare numbers to see if there is a difference. I couldn't detect any difference, visually, at all, but i knew to look for Arkansas then i see that. That could be addressed by using another column to report a difference. Maybe use abbreviations so columns narrow, to fit in another column like that? So, the tracking will be by number of counties covered vs. to be covered?

I guess i actually thought you'd do a tally for just the states and territories needing work, which would be those in the bottom section at List of RHPs that just have estimates, not final tallies. But i like seeing what we have done, too, interesting to see how many counties. And, we could want to cover other matters going back to all states, say for revising how top stuff is handled, or checking whether all sublists are have been tagged with the wikiproject banner, etc.

The Other section needs to be broken out to cover Guam vs. various other places needing work (see the broken out elements within List of RHPs.

Another way to do it, or perhaps a complementary thing, would be to splice together the tally-by-county tables for the unfinished states. But, hmm, that would just duplicate them where they currently are, causing more work. Your tracking should be more summary. So, i like what you have, but with narrow columns. Also the formatting with that dotted green line always was odd, it stems from an example i copied from long ago when tables seemed very new, but odd is okay by me.

Note, also there is Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/ProgressOnRHPsByState which has, at bottom, some old tallies of how many articles in the wikiproject there were. One thing to do this month would be to get a good new total of articles covered overall (and perhaps in each state, but i don't think that's feasible). What is current total tally? Then we'll get a bot run this month, and/or tag a log more using AWB or otherwise, and increase the count by a lot. I could easily spend weeks on finishing up the NRHP dabs needing cleanup, so i am appreciative. And then we could go on to other stuff, like using AWB to add NRHP banners etc. Would you be willing to get set up to run AWB, or have u already? I went ahead and added tallies for a bunch of completed AR and MO counties to the state-wide tables. Yes, if the town Town, Arkansas article does exist, then fixing redirects from Town, AR to it is good. But, if Town, Arkansas does not exist, a redir from Town, AR to that name is invalid. So, if u don't want to start the Town, Arkansas article, you can only change the Town, AR links to being links to Town, Arkansas, instead. I just think it's wrong to leave redlinks to Town, AR in the NRHP list-article, as that calls for people to create something there, the wrong place for any article. Yes, AR seems huge. It is the last one of the top 10 largest states. And I think it also involves more work because of practice by local/state staff to accept common names for places that then require disambiguation when viewed at national/world level, while some other states (like South Dakota perhaps) use more specific names of places. Same historically for town names and county names, often common to other states' towns and counties. This is taking forever.

P.S. Boundary increase items noted should be addressed by creating article and capturing increase info (location original and increase, both dates) into article and into list-article both, or at least i have been doing that stuff, others might not be. I'm not sure if u noticed i was doing that for Dortch one in Lonoke just now, already, but i wouldn't have deleted the boundary increase mention in old list until that was done. doncram (talk) 03:48, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

NRHP listings in Syracuse peer review

I have contributed my thoughts (generally, a good job). I should add that I actually like that you got some pictures of buildings in snow ... this is the snowiest city in the lower 48 we're talking about, after all.

Thank you for your comments! I must modestly decline your accolades for most of the pictures ... Wadester16 went and improved on my original photos. I'm sorry about that whitespace ... I've noticed the same issue too when viewing that page with IE. I honestly don't know how to fix it.

Making the maps really isn't hard. I screen-cap the appropriate section from Open Street Map, then put the overlays in in Photoshop and save it as a PNG.

I also have some suggestions for one of your Syracuse articles: Hall of Languages, Syracuse University, a building I have very fond memories of since it (at least then; I think it still does) housed the English department (as well as religion, philosophy and (I think) political science) and I spent a lot of time in its classrooms and offices. You definitely want to get a picture of its interior, since it was completely gutted in the early '80s and rebuilt. It now has a very contemporary interior with a sort of slanted atrium that goes up two or three stories from the front ... you'd see it almost immediately upon entry. This would have happened after it was listed, so you'll need some other source.

Also, I don't know if the nomination said this or not, but I'm not entirely sure it's the earliest SU building (it certainly is the oldest extant one). I always thought it was slightly predated by Winchell Hall, a small brick building across the street that was demolished in the early 1980s to make way for the Schine Student Center. Or maybe I'm just remembering that Winchell was the university's first chancellor. Whatever.

Funny yet unecyclopedic story about "HL" as it's referred to on-campus: One group I was part of was responsible for organzing homecoming every year, and among those responsibilities was organizing the homecoming king and queen contest. That includes developing the questions you ask the candidates. We decided one year to include an offbeat one: If you could be any building on campus, which one would you be? (yes, it got some laughs). Almost every respondent said that they'd be the Hall of Languages.

Perhaps I should look up the nom and expand the article for you. It would be a labor of love, and it wouldn't take a lot of time since it's an early '70s app and likely to be short. Daniel Case (talk) 14:29, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

NC tableizing

Hi Lvklock ... thanks for asking about the NC NRHP tables. I have been ever-so-slowly working my way through the counties. I've slowed to snail's pace lately because my work schedule has encroached significantly on the time I spend out here. But I'm finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and hope to have at least a little more time for tableizing here. That said, I've been working through the NC counties in reverse order of the number of listings. The county counts in the table on the main NC page are based on a spreadsheet I have with NC listings which I think is comprehensive and up-to-the-minute. After I create a separate article for Robeson County, my plan was to leave the tables for the remaining counties on the main NC page (like what I did with Virginia). If that results in an overly large article, I was planning to split out more counties in reverse order of the number of listings. If this seems like a reasonable plan to you, perhaps we can work in opposite directions with respect to the number of listings and meet somewhere in the middle. One of us could start with the counties with the fewest listings and work up and the other could start with the counties with the most listings and work down. I've pretty much given up on trying to reach consensus on the page-move issues (there are at least two parties who keep moving pages), but I continue to focus on trying to improve/maintain the quality of whichever articles currently exist. Interesting observation about the Hazard family of Rhode Island and Syracuse. Another little-known but ubiquitous family that I've tripped across is Meigs. I've had some interesting times trying to sort out Meigses -- I've discovered errors (and made a few errors of my own) in sorting out the different people of similar names. As near as I can tell, all of the people on the disambiguation page Meigs are members of the same family, and all of the non-person topics on that page are named for members of that family. --Orlady (talk) 02:41, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

HDs nationwide

What do you think of filing a bot request to help with Category:Historic districts in the United States? I'm thinking of asking for a bot to add the category itself to all articles with "hd" or "nhld" in the "type" line of the infobox, as long as those articles weren't already in a state-level category. Once this was complete, we'd be able to remove the category from the table without running the risk of missing any, and an edit to add the state-level category to each site could easily include removing the national category. It should be easy: far easier than trying to keep track of which states or letters had been sorted into state-level categories. Nyttend (talk) 19:03, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

NY 57 photo request

Hey there. I noticed that you've taken a few pictures (excellent pics by the way) for several Syracuse-area state route articles. Could I ask you for a big favor? The article on New York State Route 57, a fairly significant route which began in Syracuse up until it ceased to exist in 1982, could use some pictures to accentuate the prose. Apparently there are reference markers on the portion of old NY 57 (current County Route 57) between Fulton and Phoenix (based on another wiki user's edit), and a picture of one of those in the style of File:NY 18 ref marker on Lake Rd.jpg or File:NY 253 ref marker.JPG would be great. Other pics, like one of the southern terminus of New York State Route 264 (which is at old NY 57) would be very useful as well. I'm not sure of where you are in relation to Syracuse, but if this request isn't too much of a burden I'd greatly appreciate it if you could help me, and by extension the article and Wikipedia, out. OK, excellent. I was in the Syracuse area yesterday for opening day of the state fair and I took a few pictures of old NY 57, including some pictures of old reference markers along the way (check out Commons:Category:New York State Route 57). However, I wasn't thrilled with how any of the three pics came out. So, if you could take a picture of one, I'd appreciate it. It turns out that it's not necessary to go to Phoenix to find the markers; I saw some along old NY 57 as far south as southern Clay. There's a couple halfway decent ones right around the NY 31 / CR 57 intersection in Clay: one just north of the intersection on CR 57 northbound and one a bit farther north on CR 57 southbound (the pics I took that didn't come out too well are of the latter marker). Hey again, just checking up on the request. At the same time, I have another one, this time for a current route in the Syracuse area that may or may not be closer to you than Phoenix. =) This one is New York State Route 598, located just northeast of downtown. What would really be a good pic is the intersection of NY 298 and NY 598, a picture of a "NY 930M" reference marker (the former designation of NY 598 between NY 298 and the Syracuse city line), if any still exist (they may have been all changed over to read "598"), or anything else you think will work well. AWB

I think they mostly have "designated =", not "designated=" (you type in just the phrase you want to search on, without quote marks). You can check some manually, outside of AWB. And, you could just set the Skip settings to not skip any, but just to step through them all. And you yourself can choose manually to skip each one that you don't want to address. About the Template talk:Did you know#Fiddler's Reach Fog Signal, i am not sure that one "winds" a counterweight-powered clock. The DYK hook involving a "counterweight mechanism that had to be wound by hand every four hours" (and the passage in the article) don't quite make sense to me. Do u think the whole Eur list should be in one sortable table, or divided into smaller tables by country? I am not sure. Back in July, I asked your opinion about filing a request for a bot to add HD categories to HD articles so that we could remove Category:Historic districts in the United States from {{Infobox nrhp}}. It will add a state-level category to any article with {{Infobox nrhp}} that is tagged with "hd" or "nhld", unless (1) the names of multiple states appear, in which case it will add Category:Historic districts in the United States [so we can sort it manually later], or (2) there's already an HD category on the article. I actually can't remember what all I did: to speed up the process, I saved each document as [NRIS document number].pdf. Therefore, I saved the form for Ohio's "Black History TR" as "64000610.pdf". I'm in process of checking the names and renaming the files to reflect the MPS name. I think that I did everything that Doncram says that I did (including Iowa 13-55), plus Oregon and Oklahoma at least. Great! Thanks again, both of you! There's only a chance that that this will have been urgently necessary, but it is probably good to have these ourselves, anyhow, as the source site can go down anytime, and I do think it would be reasonable for them to remove at least some.

BTW, it went faster for me only late in this process when i realized i could do the downloading by first clearing "My Mozilla cache" where firefox saves downloads, then click on all for a state (slowly, not having more than 6 in process at a time, or the download requests get lost), then copy-paste over to a new directory for that state. And then compare counts to make sure I had the right number of them. While yesterday i went really slowly, opening each file and renaming them (which is nice for having them be more useful later of course).

I think we got them all then, glad to see certain states in Nyttend's list. Some duplication is good, too. We have some overlaps because Nyttend and I apparently both did HI, SD, SC, and I have assorted ones from all states as i took any ones with various keywords in the list-stated titles. Passing through

On Friday, my son and I will probably be driving through Central New York and Syracuse on our way to an anniversary party in Buffalo. I'll be taking NRHP pics where I can just off the freeways, but not in CNY since you've already done so (although it looks like the Jamesville listings would be within reach of a short detour from I-81, if that's something you don't think you'll be able to get to. And Elbridge, too).

I will be trying to take some roadscape photos, if the weather makes it glorious enough and we have made good time — I-81 along the moraines, that view of Cortland from I-81 as you approach (the article needs that!) the Thruway through the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (you know, the long straight section where you can see two miles ahead), and perhaps US 20 at Big Bend, just off the interstate ... I think I recall that being pretty scenic.

Blocks and bans

This is in response to your comment on the 3RR noticeboard (which doesn't need any more clutter, IMO).

You may find Wikipedia:Blocking policy interesting reading. Blocks and bans at Wikipedia are not supposed to be forms of punishment so much as they are supposed to protect Wikipedia and the user community from disruptive behavior. (I'm not quoting the page here -- those are my words, and the page may say things a little bit differently.) I realize that it's hard for all of us not to think of them as punishments. However, if you think of them as preventive actions it's much easier to accept the seeming inconsistencies in their application. If the general idea is to cause disruptive behavior to cease -- and hopefully not happen again, it makes sense that different cases would be handled differently, and that evidence of new disruptive activity does not necessarily lead to extending the duration of an ongoing user block.

As for whether or not Polaron was socking, the evidence is all at the WP:SPI case and it seems pretty clear. It's not for me to second-guess the decision of the administrator who handled that case and determined the durations of the blocks, and I don't think it's beneficial for the community to continue discussing a closed SPI case on the 3RR noticeboard. (Similarly, it's not for me to second-guess the decisions of the administrator who handled the 3RR case.) YMMV. --Orlady (talk) 18:20, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

The only real site I think I have left is the Stafford Historic district in Ventor, and even that was from me hurrying before dark, hunger, etc. 4 pix there and I think I got one that could go up. In short, I'd love to see yours.

In particular, I may have Barclay Court, Holmhurst Hotel, Morton Hotel ?, Santa Rita Apartments, and the Segal Building, but I have to sort them out, and they are all empty lots or parking lots, if I remember correctly.

The more interesting question is a nice building at 15 S. Pennsylvania, with Barclay Court apparently the parking lot at 9-11 S. Pennsylvania. Other than that 2 pix of Trumps parking lot and I couldn't really decide which side of the street the parking lot that used to be Santa Rita Apartments was on Smallbones (talk) 04:53, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

re the AN discussion relating to doncram and a proposed ban on the creation of alleged low quality stubs

You have in your contributions to the above discussion alleged various violations, by un-named parties in most part, of Wikipedia:No personal attacks. I have asked, on that page, for you to supply some examples, by way of diffs, of such personal attacks so I may review them and take such action as I deem necessary. I am asking because my reason for moving my "comment" to "support" was in light of doncram's responses to what appeared reasonable points made by some editors immediately before the AN discussion was opened. If these comments, although still inappropriate in some cases, were made following bad faith comments by those other parties then I shall have to reconsider my opinion. Gosh, yes. Please feel free to go ahead and change out pics if you think yours are better. Especially in hugely obvious cases like this one, where when I took the picture it was in the midst of rehab that's clearly been finished now. There's a pic I took 3 or 4 years ago in Daytona Beach of an NHL with scaffolding all around it that no one's ever changed out. 2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. Thank you. He and I very much enjoyed meeting you as well. My involvement here has been minimal for a long time, just pictures. I would upload them ro commons and Don would put them in articles and lists. When I have the heart to get back into it, I may reach out for some pointers on all I can't remember how to do.
