The curse of Wikitrivia[edit]

Meaning of name Ealing[edit]

I see that the etymology of the name Ealing has been removed because 'format not verified'. I am not sure what that reason means, but here I quote in full the entry in 'Dictionary of Place-Names in the British Isles' by Adrian Room, Bloomsbury, 1988, ISBN 0 7475 0170 X:

'Ealing (Greater London) This town and borough in west London had its name recorded in about 700 as Gillingas, showing the personal name Gilla with the Old English suffix -ingas, meaning 'people of'. The overall sense of the name is thus '(place of) the people associated with Gilla'. It is possible that in more recent times the name has come to be wrongly associated with 'eel', because of its proximity (and even more, that of Little Ealing) to the Thames. The name appears in a document of 1553 as Elyng. Compare Ely (which is correctly associated with eels).'

I have now added an etymology section, using some Room's words plus the old entry for changes in the name to the present time, which presumably came from one of the general local references quoted as further reading. Spencer Perceval[edit]

Perceval's name was removed from the list of notable Ealing residents because the Wikipedia entry for him says that Elm Grove was in Hanwell. Elm Grove was at the south west corner of Ealing Common as the 1894 map clearly shows, so he was definately an Ealing resident. In addition to that, his daughters were in residence in Pitshanger Manor on Ealing Green until Walpole Park was sold to the borough in 1900. Peter Maggs 18:43, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ealing Broadway and Ealing Common as suburbs[edit]

I am removing this sentence:

Ealing consists of 3 smaller suburbs, namely Ealing Broadway, Ealing Common and Little Ealing (South Ealing), but they are never classified on their own as suburbs.

Ealing Broadway and Ealing Common are not suburbs, Ealing Broadway is the name of a road with a station named after it and Ealing Common is the name of a park. The linked articles are not about suburbs, but redirect to articles about said station and park respectively. Also how is a suburb "classified on its own" anyway? If you're going by postcode districts, there are only two "official" areas, Ealing and West Ealing, in which case you also have parts of Northfields, North Ealing and Pitshanger Village also sharing the W5 area. - filelakeshoe 01:58, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Famous people and achievements[edit]

Is it not time to prune this section right back and rely more on the link to Category:People from Ealing. The very size of this list makes the page look messy. Also, the article is primarily about a geographical place (Ealing) not the people whose sojourn through life had them colliding with it. So, whilst they are an inseparable part of Ealing rich tapestry the article would be better if these people are listed else where.--Aspro (talk) 12:18, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Schools[edit]

There is no mention of any schools in the area. I am presently writing a biograph for Air Marshal Sir Michael Giddings who attend Ealing Grammar School. There is no mention of this in the article. Community[edit]

This section is confusing the article as being about the London Borough of Ealing. So I am going to split it up and move to different articles. The Polish community first developed in Acton,_London due to the concentration of industry and cheap accommodation that once existed there. They also commuted into nearby Park Royal but I do not have references for that. The Polish squadron at RAF Northolt was a wartime strategic/resource issue and so had nothing to do with the existence of an Acton community. Finally, mention of the memorial belongs in South Ruislip. It has no conection with Ealing --Aspro (talk) 19:48, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hyperbole[edit]

I'm a little curious about the sentence 'It is often referred to by its inhabitants and in literature as the "Queen of the Suburbs".' in the intro. To date, I see little (or little enough) in this article about Ealing to do with the notable contributions many well-known authors in Ealing have made to English literature over the years, which I find mildly disappointing to say the least: Literally, Ealing may not be the centre of the literary universe but, nonetheless, it is probably still quite near it. I, personally, would welcome any additions to the article that would reflect and support this notable relationship, or argument, and I suspect that the many well-known authors who now live or who have lived (if they are still alive) in Ealing would feel the same way about it. ~ ThaddeusPennib (talk) 15:39, 1 December 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.149.140.177 (talk) [reply]

Public transport[edit]

This open source public transport map, shows the Ealing Broadway bus and train termini. http://öpnvkarte.de/?zoom=17&lat=51.51465&lon=-0.3034&layers=B Thought it might help with the writting the transport section. It is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 License so would it be useful to have an image of it in this article as a picture paints a thousands words etc.?

Whilst on the sibject of transport. On the Ealing Braodway, the North Star public house (which is on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest [1]) was named after the Great Western's first locomotive, which was a modern technological wonder of its day. However, I can't find a good reference for it. It is bound to be mentioned in Ealing: from village to corperate town by Charles Jones (1902) but I don't have a copy. There is an interesting short film entitled Panorama of Ealing from a moving tram (1901) but unfortuantly it is realesed under a UK only Creative Archive Licence, even though it is out of copyright by now ( or come to think about it – this would have been well before copyright on film came into existnce, so probly never had copyright protection in the first place).
