Moved from article Apokrif 16:10, 25 July 2006 (UTC) The most recent release for Firefox has problems when editing long MediaWiki pages (see bug 5643).

Seems fixed with the latest release, see comments 31 & 32 to bug 5643. Testing it with http://test.leuksman.com/toolbar-tab-bug.html , the textarea is not truncated any more.

on Firefox?

what's the point of having Google Toolbar(GT) on Firefox(FF) if FF already have a search engine box in it? And does GT have any whatever-ware embedded in it? --Zerat ca 19:31, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm sure different people use it for different reasons. The Toolbar can replace more than one extension, for instance. The primary unique feature, though, is the PageRank display. Webmasters, especially search-engine optimizers, like to have that information.--Dhartung | Talk 21:06, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Latest version

Can someone running IE check current the current version? I hate to register 23:57, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I just installed today on this PC, the version is 4.1019.5266-big/en --NEMT 06:05, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Added the update template to make it clear the info is outdated. 195.24.29.51 10:46, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Controversy

I heard people were annoyed that the toolbar inserted ads into the pages etc. Is this true? I saw it mentioned looking up "Google" + "Evil" on Google. raptor 14:58, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

preventing update

The latest edition of the toolbar invades my browser space with unwanted and unneeded buttons. It would be great if Wikipedia could provide a link to a solution that prevents the toolbar from auto-updating! Thanks! 195.24.29.51 10:40, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure what we're supposed to do here. Wikipedia is not a technical support site. --Dhartung | Talk 10:48, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

OS?

Does the information really need to list an OS, as far as I can tell, its platform indedpendent. As long as you can get firefox running, you can have google toolbar. --User:Bassgoonist Feb, 12, 2007.

re: functions on the google toolbar

This is a reply to the post regarding the google toolbar taking up too much room. It is pretty easy to adjust the functions on the google toobar. just click on the options button and remove what you don't want.

Alternatively, try using Firefox, rather than IE. Then you won't need the Google Toolbar at all. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 0s1r1s (talkcontribs) 05:28, 30 March 2007 (UTC).

  • Shouldn't this page describe what this toolbar does? I stumbled on this wikipedia page because I had this thing get automatically installed with no clue as to what it does nor why I should want it. Of course, I immediately uninstalled it (and am somewhat annoyed by the way it is presented). But I want to make sure I am making the right decision, and have been searching around for some list of reasons as to why I might want this thing installed. Anyways, so far, I have found not only no compelling list of reasons to install this thing, I have found no indication that it does anything at all! And I know it has to do *something*.
I'd second that - I uninstalled "Google Toolbar for IE" as part of a cleanup of someone's machine and was curious as to what it does. The entire body of the article is about another product, Google Compute. I'd look at http://toolbar.google.com/ to see what it does but I get redirected to this which offers a link to an EXE without explanation and a link to Google Toolbar 4 which actually shows a page about version 3 but adjusting the URL manually gets me to this page for version 4. The list of options offered seems redundant for someone using either FireFox 3 or IE 8. Marc Kupper (talk) (contribs) 20:44, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Broken link

http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=13539 doesn't seem to be alive anylonger, redirects to the root/forum index. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ahoier (talkcontribs) 04:49, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Malware

Adaware and Spybot list this as Malware/Spyware and ask if you wish to remove it. Corporately, many companies I give IT support to via contract have listed this as a 'banned software' install. Users can be fired for installing it. I don't know about referenceing that though since internal corporate policies usually are not available on the web or covered in newspaper articles --Brian(view my history)/(How am I doing?) 16:48, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I was really surprised to see 'Spyware' in the 'Type' field in the short description box on the right. The very beginning of the article doesn't also look too objective: 'Google Toolbar is an Internet browser toolbar available for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which records the surfing behaviour of the user.' I believe that was not specifically designed to do so. Users are informed of it, and they can turn this functionality if they want to. I wouldn't make such statements in the very beginning of the article. Suggest rewriting that.

User agent string

anyone can update the page with this info? pls. thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.215.196.10 (talk) 23:37, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Separate Google Compute?

Although the title of this article is Google Toolbar, most of the content is really about Google Compute. There would ideally be a discussion of the various versions of the toolbar, features, etc. I'm certainly not an expert on the topic, but I think the article needs a refocus. thoughts?Joe JJC (talk) 19:19, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Chrome(ium)

It might be good to add a note for anyone wondering why Google’s toolbar is not available for Google’s browser. I don’t know exactly—I assume it’s because most of the features are or will be built-in—but I’m sure it’s a question on peoples’ minds and would be good to address. Synetech (talk) 19:43, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

From: Taushif96

I have the answer Sytech, The Google Toolbar does not work for Google Chrome because it has most of the same features that Google Toolbar have. If you search from the address bar on Chrome, it will google search it for you.

Was it Helpful? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Taushif96 (talkcontribs) 12:31, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Word censorship

You know that as typing a query in the search box a list of suggestions based on popular searches appears. I noticed that it doesn't work for the word nigger (actually there are two suggestions, niggersniggersniggers and niggerniggersniggers) while there are a lot for nigga and "niger ". I wonder what other censored words are there.

By the way, the same happens with the YouTube search, typing "nigger" won't get you any suggestions.

Size of Google Toolbar - Big? Small?

Hi, everyone. I have a question about google toolbar. There is less space on my HD(hard drive or C:\ Drive). But I want it. Does anyone know it's size? If you could tell me the size, it will be helpful. Thanks,

sidewiki not a wiki

If only one site should make it clear sidewiki isn't a true wiki, it is Wikipedia.

It isn't a true wiki because you can't edit others. Despite the name it's basically a centralized comments utility.

(This has been reported widely; sourcing this claim shouldn't be a problem) CapnZapp (talk) 14:21, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Looks a lot like Wikalong, which actually was a wiki, but now seems to be abandoned. -Terrible Tim (talk) 19:48, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

The implications for all sites, including Wikipedia, if this thing catches on are going to be huge. What good is all the nitpicking about 'NPOV' and sourcing statements if there's going to be a 'sidewiki' out of wikipedia's control next to every article where anyone can write anything? All the concerns about BLPs are going to look silly if a cesspool of nonsense gets loaded up beside every page. There's no way to opt out of it either. Nick mallory (talk) 12:16, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, if it catches on. There was another toolbar that did the same thing more than five years ago, and it even overlayed comments on the content. There was some controversy but it ended up going nowhere - it was called Page(something) any one remember that? --Themshow (talk) 13:01, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Try 10 years ago. It was called ThirdVoice. Wired has an interesting article about its demise.DataSurfer (talk) 15:46, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Proof that you need not Google_Toolbar to see SiteWiki comments

As all claims in WikiPedia must (at least) be given evidence, the author inserted an external link to a SideWiki comment on the article page, but was refuted by the system. So he hopes that this link is visible to people, who have not installed the Google Bar. GoogleSideWikiCommentsOnWikipediaDiscussionPages

GoogleSidewiki:GoogleSideWikiCommentsOnWikipediaDiscussionPages

The WikiPedia engine refutes links to GoogleSideWikiComments on Wikipedia article pages, when explicitly linked to their URIs.

Let's test, if the same mechanism is active on a discussion page.

In the opinion of the author it would be a great benefit for Wikipedia and its authors, if at least such explicit links were allowed by the system, because this would imbed the consensus-building into more Social_Networks. --Fridemar (talk) 16:24, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Time to stop the neutrality dispute about Google Toolbar?

The are references for the criticism. What is there to dispute? 95.34.181.62 (talk) 19:38, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

I agree. Does anyone have a problem with removing this? Harry1717 (talk) 03:35, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
I agree too. Hirak 99 (talk) 12:18, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Why isn't Word Translator Part of the Features Section?

I have noticed that the Word Translator is not mentioned in the Google Toolbar article, nor is the Google Toolbar (with word translator feature) mentioned in the Google Translate article.

Why is this so? The Word Translator feature is a major feature of the Toolbar, and is used by large numbers of nonEnglish students at English language Universities. I went to ANU in Canberra and I have seen the Chinese students use the word translator on their laptops. In fact I would say that the Google Toolbar is the most used vehicle for Google Translation services.

The following HELP page of Google documents the Word Translator feature

[Word Translator]

I am the creator of the Wikipedia GoogleTrans gadget which uses Google to offer services similar to the Google Toolbar word translator, so I have noticed its absence.

Reference to the Word Translator feature should be included in both the Google Toolbar article and the Google Translate article.
