1980[edit]

Actually, the 1980 World Series calls by Kalas are re-creations. Due to network regulations of the time, local announcers were not permitted to broadcast World Series games. This was mentioned on the video for the 20th anniversary of the 1980 world championship. Kalas called it a very frustrating time, but as Dallas Green noted, "Harry Kalas can re-create baseball better than most people can do it live." J-Red 15:06, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Outtaherephils[reply]

According to the Randy Miller book, "Harry the K: The Remarkable Life of Harry Kalas", Kalas has had experience recreating baseball games from his time with the Hawaii Islanders. As he did not travel on the road with the team, he got information via telephone from sports writers at the game and recreated the game from that information. While he was growing up, he had also recreated imaginary baseball games as a form of fun, using a then-popular board game as his inspiration and source for each player's performance. Bill S. Tribute comments[edit]

Wherever a blog is hosted, it's still not considered a reliable source. KV5 (TalkPhils) 12:56, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Per your link, "Note that otherwise reliable news sources--for example, the website of a major news organization--that happens to publish in a "blog" style format for some or all of its content may be considered to be equally reliable as if it were published in a more "traditional" 20th-century format of a classic news story." (emphasis mine) Tomdobb (talk) 13:40, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And there's also this essay that states "Weblog material written by well-known professional researchers writing within their field, or well-known professional journalists, may be acceptable, especially if hosted by a university, newspaper or employer." Tomdobb (talk) 13:44, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A non-blog source would still be better, such as [1]. I have no problem with it if cited that way. KV5 (TalkPhils) 14:05, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I absolutely agree. Any time a non-blog source is available it's definitely preferable. Tomdobb (talk) 14:10, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers. KV5 (TalkPhils) 14:57, 14 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Think we can get a better picture of the man? There are better ones out there... --Joeybags79 (talk) 02:07, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've looked. There's nothing better on Flickr that's free-use, and because this free image is available, no fair use images can be used. I did my best to find a free image and to clean this one up as best I could. KV5 (TalkPhils) 11:49, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I stepped up to the plate and replaced that awful photo with one I took myself at the 2008 World Championship Parade. One of the best I took that day. The lack of good free pictures of notable people is a real problem and somewhat ironic.Sturmovik (talk) 04:37, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Viewing in the stadium[edit]

The article says that Kalas will be the second person to be honored with a viewing in a baseball stadium on game day, after Babe Ruth, but ESPN says Jack Buck also got this treatment, and the article on Buck doesn't specify which day. Can anyone clarify? ShaleZero (talk) 01:20, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greek descent[edit]

Harry is not GREEK ... If theyre is any Greek in him it is completely washed out.. he is white .. non greek features .. light hair light skin.. and the only thing that sounds greek is his last name .. none of his first or middle names are GREEK .. i should know cause im Greek .. he must be mixed with like irish or other white ethnicities .. cause no full GReek looks like that .. or would have kids with that light of complexion or light hair regardless if his wife was white.. p.s. he isnt orthodox .. and he doesnt know greek .. all greeks who came here in the 1930's know greek and are all orthodox —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.114.155.71 (talk) 02:20, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

kalas is most definitely greek. to say he's not greek because he's not greek orthodox is plain silly. and just because you don't speak greek doesn't mean you're not greek. hello??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.133.179.131 (talk) 18:18, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Before any claims of ancestry are made, a source must be provided. KV5 (TalkPhils) 19:09, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted for the following reasons:

  1. The source provided is not reliable. It's essentially a blog.
  2. The sources that the source itself used included two audio sources, which do not contain the information.
  3. Other sources that this article used included this article (which is probably where the Greek descent came from, unreferenced), and two reliable sources, MLB.com and ESPN.com, neither of which mention Greek descent.

In essence, no true reliable reference was provided; since the fact is still unverifiable, I've removed it. KV5 (TalkPhils) 11:50, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm of Greek decent and have asked Harry's son here in Tampa if he was indeed of Greek decent. Todd verfied that he nor his father is of Greek decent, and that he get's that question a lot. But he verified that he is not of Greek decent. George Klimis of www.georgenation.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.155.188.58 (talk) 16:12, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why was autograph removed?[edit]

I own the Harry Kalas autograph.jpg file and uploaded it, which came from a letter that Kalas had sent me. I claim fair use as well as ownership, and authorize Wikipedia to use that autograph.

Why was it removed? I intend to replace it. Bill S. (talk) 10:08, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New photo of his grave is needed[edit]

I pulled this one off Google. Have no idea if it's allowed. I have a few photos of his grave myself.

http://s3-media2.px.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/SB_ZF10Rub8JmEBvQLSz4Q/l.jpg

Anyway, the current image is both out of date and rather embarrassing compared to the finished product. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.245.229.247 (talk) 06:27, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unless the photo is released for use under free license, we can't use or accept in this article. Better to have an old out of date image than none at all... — KV5Talk • 11:23, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated vandalism of images[edit]

There has been repeated vandalism of this page where images have been removed, even when those images have been uploaded with the proper copyright notices and image releases. I myself have been the victim of such vandalism, as I have posted images wholly created by myself and released to Wikipedia for free use, with the provision that the use of such images are properly credited to myself, including File:Harry Kalas permanent grave marker.jpg. All copyright notifications were properly filed yet the images were completely removed from Wikipedia by bots, even when the proposal for deletion was properly challenged - one by a bot belonging to a member who placed a temporary "away message" on their talk page, thereby eliminating any chance of challenging an improper removal. I feel that the use of bots should be disallowed by Wikipedia. Bill S. (talk) 05:22, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
