Proposed merger[edit]

I think this article should be merged with Utah-BYU rivalry.

I am also against merging. There should be a football specific article on the rivalry. Also, there should be info about "The Holy War" which refers to just the football game. Ute in DC (talk) 04:42, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Logos[edit]

There needs to be some consensus on the logo placement. I have seen the order change several times in the last few months and it just seems unnecessary. Just because one logo is first doesn't mean one team is better than the other. Let's make a decision on order. I have a few ideas:

  • Alphabetical (in the interest of full disclosure, I am a BYU fan, so some may dispute this method as being self interested)
  • Put the team that won the last football game first. (I like this solution best)
  • Just decide and leave it that way.

Not Historic Dates[edit]

Historic dates mean more than just "oh so and so won". There needs to more to them than that. The following are not* "historic dates":

  1. 1995: For the third straight year, Utah wins, 34-17.
  2. 1996: BYU defeats Utah 37-17 on their way to a 14-1 finish.
  3. 1998: Utah misses the game-winning field goal, losing 26-24 in the first rivalry game played at newly rebuilt Rice-Eccles Stadium.
  4. 2001: BYU running back Luke Staley races down the sideline with 1:16 left to play to give the Cougars a 24-21 victory.
  5. 2003: Utah's 3-0 victory in a November blizzard in Urban Meyer's first year marks the first time in 28 years that BYU is shut out in a football game.
  6. 2005: In the first overtime game of the series, backup QB Brett Ratliff leads Utes to a 41-34 victory.
  7. 2006: BYU wins in Salt Lake 33-31 with a post-regulation touchdown to finish 10-2 and undefeated in conference.
  8. 2007: BYU beats Utah with a late drive to win 17-10 and clinch the outright conference championship.

They were just games that, like many college football games, were exciting to watch but not really significant. Who cares if Utah won for a third straight year? Or if Staley made a last minute run? Or even if the game went down to the wire? They way I hear it the BYU-Utah game is almost always decided by less than a touchdown. Image:BYUCougars.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. Deseret First Duel[edit]

The Deseret First Duel became a major part of the Utah v. BYU rivalry, beginning in 2007. Perhaps either a new article or new section to the Holy War page should be made. Thoughts? Xynariz (talk) 17:50, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is a corporate sponsorship that could go away. I disagree that is is "a major part" of the rivalry. There are not many newspaper articles about it nor do fans discuss it. Ute in DC (talk) 22:43, 16 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that we should add an infobox about the rivalry. No official one exists as far as I can tell, but some articles do have one. See: Backyard Brawl, Michigan – Ohio State rivalry

Last 10 games column[edit]

User 174.23.77.124 added a "Last 10 games" column on the series history chart. I thought this added clutter without any commensurate addition in information. Furthermore, none of the other rivalry pages I looked at appeared to have this column. See, e.g. Commonwealth Cup, Backyard Brawl, Michigan – Ohio State rivalry, or Notre Dame – USC rivalry. —Ute in DC (talk) 06:30, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname for 2009 game[edit]

Looking at the history of this page, there seems to be dispute as to a nickname for the 2009 game. "Second overtime" is one proposition, "George is still running" another. Others include "Touchdown, by George!".

Also, should the 2009 game even be mentioned? Is it notable enough? Maybe only due to Max Hall's post-game comments? Hillshum|Talk 06:17, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am fine with calling it "George is still running" or something else if there is a consensus for a different name. I had to call the section something so I just chose "second overtime game." It's bland and I certainly won't be offended if it's changed. As for notability, Max Hall's post game comments made espn. Maybe the game won't be notable in a few years, but right now it is—the game is likely to be of interest to anyone reading this page. Biased Edits[edit]

Subheadings in Series History[edit]

I think that the subheadings in the Series History section of the article should be changed to be more encyclopedic. For example, "Jim McMahon says, "Scoreboard" should be changed to something like "1980: BYU wins 56-6." BajaChikn (talk) 05:54, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
