Indian Immunologicals Limited or IIL is a biopharmaceutical company based in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It was established in 1982 by the National Dairy Development Board.[1] [2] [3] [4]
Indian Immunologicals Ltd was registered as a company in 1999 under the companies’ act. IIL today is a leading “One Health” company in India involved in the manufacture animal vaccines, human vaccines, nutraceuticals and formulations.[5]

IIL has three vaccine manufacturing facilities in India. The Gachibowli-Hyderabad facility is engaged in the production of vaccines, while the Karakapatla-Hyderabad facility produces animal health formulations and human vaccines. IIL’s facility in Ooty exclusively produces human anti-rabies vaccine, “Abhayrab”. IIL’s manufacturing plants conform to GMP and are certified for ISO9001. [Pristine Biologicals Ltd] is IIL’s subsidiary in New Zealand and is involved in the production of serum used in the manufacture of vaccines.[6]

IIL started manufacturing human vaccines in 1998 on a specific request by the Government of India. IIL launched purified vero cell rabies vaccine (PVRV)– Abhayrab. This led to the discontinuation of use of older and unsafe sheep brain derived vaccine (also termed Nerve Tissue Vaccine – NTV) in the country.[7]

Animal Health

IIL manufactures animal health vaccines and formulations. After the introduction of FMD vaccine — “Raksha”, IIL launched the tissue culture rabies vaccine “Raksharab” in 1989. IIL is the third largest animal health player in the Indian market and the market leader in veterinary biologicals in India. It operates one of the largest plants in the world for veterinary vaccines which is WHO-GMP and ISO-9001, 14001, 18001 and 27001 certified.[8]

IIL is the largest producer of animal vaccines in India. IIL operates one of the largest BSL 3 Plus facilities in the world for the manufacture Foot and Mouth disease vaccine (FMD). IIL also introduced the world’s first vaccine against Porcine Cysticercosis –Cysvax. IIL is the only producer of companion animal vaccines in India.[9]

Human Health

To a request from the Government of India to make a safe vaccine for Human Rabies IIL in 1999 launched the country's first purified Vero cell rabies vaccine (PVRV) - Abhayrab. Till date several million doses of the vaccine have been sold in India and over 29 countries and is a leading brand.


Human Biologicals Institute

IIL established Human Biologicals Institute (HBI) in 1999 to manufacture modern Tissue Culture Anti Rabies Vaccine (TCARV) for human use at Ooty, Tamilnadu. Based on the capacity created by IIL, the Government was able to phase out usage of NTV from Government hospitals.[10]


International Business

IIL exports its products to more than 50 countries across the world with a customer focus in Middle East, Asia, Africa, CISR countries and expanding in Central and Latin America.


Product Pipeline

In animal health, IIL is working on inactivated vaccine against IBR, a recombinant tick vaccine and multi component clostridial vaccine.[11]

On the human vaccines side, the R&D group of IIL has developed technology for Hepatitis A, Chikungunya vaccine, Measles rubella vaccine.


Recent Developments

Immunologicals Limited (IIL) is developing a vaccine for coronavirus in a cross-continental collaboration. It is leading the cross-continental research collaboration in association with the Griffith University of Australia to develop 'live attenuated SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine or Covid-19 vaccine' using the latest codon de-optimization technology.[12] [13]

Veterinary and human vaccine manufacturer Indian Immunologicals Ltd. (IIL) has launched Classical Swine Fever (CSF) vaccine under brand name “Rakhsa Class” The Raksha Class vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine and has been tested for safety, sterility and potency. The field trials were conducted at Bengaluru and Hyderabad Veterinary colleges.[14] [15]
