Dearest Wikipedia,

can somebody please explain how it is possible?

"The five largest ancestry groups in Iowa are: ... American (6.6%) ... The racial make up of the state is ... 0.4% American Indian. One percent of respondents report two or more races."

So where are that 5,2% of Iowa, who have American ancestry, but are not belonging to the American race, and are not belonging to two or more races? Who are they?

That's a Census classification, not a Wikipedia one, so I can't say for sure. Just a guess, though, but perhaps "American" refers to those who answered the survey with "American" instead of "German" or some-such? Quad City Mallards

In the section under "Sports", it says: "The Quad City Mallards games are played in Moline, Illinois as part of the Central Hockey League."

I know Moline is part of the Quad Cities and thus there is some cultural connection with Iowa; nevertheless, this is an Illinois team. Do we really want it here? Kansan (talk) 18:00, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Good question. Do you know if they are primarily affiliated with Moline in particular or with the Quad Cities as a whole? with professional sports franchises (even semi pro) use the place in their name to denote the area of operation. For example: The New England Patriots would be within their charter to move the team to say Hartford, Connecticut or Providence, Rhodes Island without changing their name. I would say that the Quad City Mallards belong to the area not to a single state. Two of the Quad Cities are in Iowa so it belongs in this article as long as there is a place for it. Voter Trends

I didn't read all the political sections, but this one wasn't done well. Wrong information, partisan language, slanted adjectives, and poor grammar. To top all that off there is little to no context and even less critical information to support the suppositions. The question becomes, is this a section that has value or is it propaganda? The one I just edited was a political piece froth with easily disproved errors and framed in a subjective manner. The framing is still subjective and the section is suspect to me. While I don't see any "propoganda" there, it is poorly written, outdated, and has an inappropriate emphasis on the presidency and federal government. The paragraph on congressmen looks somewhat slanted and is sufficiently outdated that it could probably be removed without hurting anything. Oh, and the entire thing is unreferenced. If you wanted to spend some time fixing it up, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate it! Personally I'd scrap the whole section as useless. Look at the previous verse of the Voter trends because that's a cleaned up one. The information was largely wrong and easily variably so. As you pointed out it had little to do with actually anything but trivia. I think I could polish it but I would be banging my head against the wall for something that I don't see as substantive. I'll wait to see if anyone else weighs in with why this is worth while before I eliminate it. Despyria (talk) 20:59, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Vibrant? Historic?

The phrase, "Other communities with vibrant historic downtown areas include" appears four times in the article. Once would constitute wishful thinking. Four times amount to fantasy of the highest order.

Iowa is, in global terms, a farming backwater. To suggest that any part of it is "vibrant" shows a disconnect with the world. This may, ironically, be quite a suitable outlook for an Iowan. Hi Iowa Wikipedians! Long time. Just wanted to let you know that I have finally put my collection of 7204 photographs from 213 towns in 59 counties in Iowa on line. These include general town photos (of varying quality), as well as NRHP buildings. They all have the Creative Commons CC BY-NC 3.0 license. Trivia.

It's the only state with two vowels for its abbreviation. It's the only state whose eastern and western borders are formed by rivers. Who actually cares about this meaningless nonsense? This is not encyclopedic. Is Wikipedia just a place-mat in a truck-stop diner? Is it the only state who's third largest county contains more than seventeen obelisks? Can I put that in?

Requested edit: 10.3 Political Parties

It is currently listed that Iowa only recognizes two political parties and the Libertarian Party is currently listed as a nonparty political organization. The Libertarian Party achieved major party status following Gary Johnson's run for President in 2016 when he garnered 3.8% of the vote in Iowa, making it the third political party recognized by the state. Semi-protected edit request on 9 November 2018

Regarding my last edit request, and the example of the article for the state of Wisconsin: The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Kenosha County, Wisconsin, would actually be the largest metro area in Wisconsin.

This does not affect the previous request for the Iowa Wikipedia page, I just wanted to acknowledge that error.

Some proposed changes

Information to be added or removed: I propose adding the below text in quotes to the education section of the page:

"Iowa ranked 19th in the nation for educational performance, according to Education Week’s Quality Counts 2018 report. It earned an overall score of 76.3 out of 100 points and a grade of C. By comparison, the nation received a score of 75.2 or a C.

Iowa posted a B in the Chance-for-Success category, ranking ninth on factors that contribute to a person’s success both within and outside the K-12 education system. Iowa received a mark of C and finished 22nd for School Finance. It ranked 32nd with a grade of C-minus on the K-12 Achievement Index."

Explanation of issue: I believe this text would enhance the page, adding information on the quality of the state's K-12 education which is not currently available on the page. I'm asking your consideration because I work for Education Week. I apologize if I've misformatted this or left out information you need to make a decision - I'm rather new at this.

Change "Largest metro" from "Greater Des Moines" to "Greater Omaha (Nebr.)"

The Omaha, Nebraska metropolitan area has a population of 944,244 (2017 estimate) and includes three counties in Iowa. The Des Moines, Iowa metropolitan area has a population of 682,877 (2017 estimate). There is no larger metropolitan area that encompasses part of the state of Iowa than the Omaha, Nebraska metropolitan area.

On diction and naming: the current article lists (incorrectly) "Greater Des Moines" as the largest metro in Iowa, despite its official OMB name being "Des Moines–West Des Moines, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)". Similarly, this should be corrected to read "Greater Omaha (Nebr.)" even though its official OMB name is "Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)". The "(Nebr.)", or alternatively "(NE)", is necessary to inform readers that the central city of the largest metropolitan area in Iowa is actually in a neighboring state.

This is a commonly occurring problem on several Wikipedia articles for U.S. states. The article for Wisconsin, for example, lists the Milwaukee metropolitan area as the largest in the state, despite the Chicago metropolitan area being much large and including parts of southeast Wisconsin.  Not done - I think there is a fundamental difference between the way you think about this and the way most people do. You interpret "largest metro area in the state" to mean "largest metro area that has any part of it in the state", whereas most people think "metro area with the largest in-state population". In your example of Wisconsin, you want to list a metro area with only 125,000 Wisconsinites (Twin Cities) as the largest Wisconsin metro area over a metro area with 1.5 million Wisconsinites (Milwaukee)! While your definition is a valid interpretation of the words "largest metro area in the state", I think that it is both out of line with how reliable sources generally report this statistic and likely to confuse readers. I have to respectfully disagree. If this is the way most people are thinking about it, then it is Wikipedia's role to inform them of the objective reality using facts. Kansas is an example of this exact circumstance, where the article correctly represents the reality that Wichita is the largest city in the state (and incidentally, is the largest metropolitan area wholly within the state), but the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area is the largest metropolitan area in Kansas. This is a common occurrence in the United States, where many large metropolitan areas have developed along major rivers that also serve as state boundaries. Singling out the situation in Iowa seems arbitrary. State articles need to be consistent on this issue, and the largest metropolitan area of a state is the largest metropolitan area that incorporates part of that state, as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget. I don't think Omaha could be called the largest metropolitan area in Iowa. Most of those people live in Nebraska and aren't relevant to an article on Iowa. The Kansas City example doesn't really apply--there are more Kansans living just on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metropolitan area than there are in the Wichita metropolitan area, so it makes sense to list Kansas City as the largest metropolitan area in Kansas. That's not the case with Omaha and Iowa--there are more Iowans living in the Des Moines metropolitan area than in the Omaha metropolitan area. Stanleythetalkingfish (talk) 14:36, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
