Joe Smith (coach)Joe Smith (American football coach) – avoid confusion with Joe Smith (football forward, born 1889) and Joe Smith (footballer, born 1890) who both served as coaches Joeykai (talk) 00:48, 4 April 2021 (UTC) Relisting. Andrewa (talk) 03:16, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Since both men are described as players and managers, I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that in association football, "manager" also functions as the equivalent of "coach" in American football. Otherwise, I would replace my "support" vote with "neutral". —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 12:56, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Relisting comment: Whether either or both of the other footballers can be described as coach seems very relevant here. I will post a heads-up at the relevant WikiProject. Andrewa (talk) 03:16, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In association football (soccer), at least in the UK, manager is the term used for the senior figure involved in buying/selling players, selecting teams, directing tactics, etc. Depending on the size of the club, the role can often extend to coaching. At many professional clubs, the managerial role will also involve appointing individuals to coaching roles; managers may be supported by individuals expressly described as coaches (both at a team level, eg: "First team coach" and/or for particular team roles, eg: a "goalkeeping coach"), though most managers will retain a direct involvement with training sessions, etc. Paul W (talk) 07:34, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think if most managers will retain a direct involvement with training sessions, etc. that justifies calling the Association managers coach. Exactly my question, thank you! Andrewa (talk) 19:45, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:04, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - American managers are described as "coaches" regardless of sport, I do think denoting a bit more is suitable. (American football coach) is the suitable disambig. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:49, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
