Education[edit]

Julian Roberts was a year younger than his classmates at King Edwards. As the pupils at King Edwards were expected to take the School Certificate Examination at 15 years of age, not the normal 16, it means he was only fourteen when he took it. Nevertheless he not only achieved matriculation standard but also achieved one distinction if my memory serves. He was well under 17 when he went to King's Cambridge for the scholarship examination in December 1946. The school instructed him to apply for a major scholarship only. Kings were wary and offered him an exhibition with a condition that he wait till the age of 18 before taking it up. The school advised him to turn the offer down and he did so. In early January 1947 he took the entrance examination at Magdalen, Oxford and was awarded its top scholarship, called a Demyship, with no restrictive conditions. Luckily for me, Christ's, Cambridge had given me a minor scholarship or we would have been competing against one another at Magdalen, no doubt to my detriment. Julian and I were classmates for five years and I enjoyed his companionship and academic skill very much. When we were pupils at King Edwards, all the places held by residents of Birmingham were subsidised by the City and also means-tested. Poor pupils, of which I was one, not only paid no fees but received a maintenance grant. Geoffrey Gardiner.G W Gardiner (talk) 10:59, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
