James Ussher[edit]

The tenure of James Ussher - as far as I know this was only 1642-3 and in commendam, so presumably the see was vacant 1643 to 1660. Charles Matthews (talk) 14:40, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Handbook of British Chronology (Carlisle p. 236) states:
BISHOP: James Ussher
ACCESSION: abp of Armagh, to hold in commendam 16 Feb 1642
DEATH (unless otherwise stated): 21 Mar 1656.
The HBOC treats the year as starting from 1 January, although at the time the year started later on 25 March. see: Old Style and New Style dates. So by old style he was bishop 1641-1655; by new style 1642-1656. I'm not sure which is best to use. Scrivener-uki (talk) 16:03, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
