Coaching career[edit]

The article states that Riley coached the San Antonio Riders 1987-90 and the San Antonio Texans 1991-92. According to the wiki pages of each team, neither team existed in those years. So, either this page is wrong OR one or both team pages is wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikiguin (talkcontribs) 08:01, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you read the article properly you realize that Mike Riley coached the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1987-1990, not the San Antonio Riders, which he ended up coaching from 1991-1992. And while he was hired to coach the San Antonio Texans in 1993, the team folded before he could actually coach them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.149.152.87 (talk) 20:20, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PRIMARY TOPIC[edit]

@162 etc. and Niceguyedc:

Mike Riley was recently moved to to Mike Riley (coach) [1] with edit summary of "WP:NOPRIMARY; see Mike Riley (referee)" and then subsequently moved from Mike Riley (coach) to Mike Riley (American football) for naming convention reasons.

Mike Riley (the American football coach) is and remains the primary topic by the stated criteria of usage and long-term significance

  • over the last 5 years[2]
  • the last 3 years[3]
  • the last year[4]

Mike Riley (referee) is "Michael Riley (born 17 December 1964) is an ex-professional football referee, who has refereed matches in the English Football League, Premier League, and for FIFA. Riley currently serves as the general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited."

What say you? UW Dawgs (talk) 03:58, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @UW Dawgs: As a card carrying Husky/Pac-12 fan myself, my first inclination was to put Mike Riley (American football) at Mike Riley. Because of that, when the original move by 162 etc. happened (Coach Riley to Mike Riley (coach), and the redirect leftover at Mike Riley changed to point to Mike Riley (disambiguation)), I was tempted to immediately revert it. But after looking at the last year, as you showed, Coach Riley is ahead, and his lead is larger during the fall, but overall it's not so significant to immediately revert the situation. As a global English project, not just an American project, they're probably close enough in notability to warrant leaving them both with disambiguated titles. With that, I moved Coach Riley to the correct disambiguator (as you mentioned, Mike Riley (American football), and moved the disambiguation page to Mike Riley, and cleaned up all the links. As for Mike Riley (referee) being an ex-professional football referee, Coach Riley is basically an ex-coach at this point - the last two years he was in the AAF and XFL (two leagues that are gone - I know the XFL is looking to try again), and now he's a broadcaster for the CFL.
  • Having said all that, I would have no complaint at all if anyone wanted to use WP:RM to start a move request, with the acknowledgement that absent any consensus, Coach Riley goes back to Mike Riley and the disambiguation page moves back to Mike Riley (disambiguation) (either by starting the move request now, or moving both pages back and starting the move request from there). -Niceguyedc (talk) 07:40, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I had overlooked the older pageview stats before doing this move; it's clear that looking at previous years, the football coach has the majority of views. However, it seems that today in 2021, both are getting a similar amount of views, and I don't believe that either has a longer long-term significance. I'll stand by my assessment of WP:NOPRIMARY; feel free to start an RM if you feel it is not uncontroversial. 162 etc. (talk) 16:02, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
