National Coach[edit]

It is not clear who the national coach is, Dragan Mamic is the Under 23 coach. Druryfire (talk) 11:33, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

– Looking over Category:Sport in Burma, there's a definite preference for Burma, the actual name of the parent article, rather than Myanmar. The primary logic I can see behind the current names is that Myanmar is the country's official name with FIFA, but even within the AFC, North Korea national football team and South Korea national football team indicate a willingness to ignore that on WP:COMMONNAME standards. Note the jarring contrast at Category:Burma national football team. Olympic-based articles should probably be moved too, but we can see how this does and wait for the current Olympics to finish. -- BDD (talk) 15:16, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose In a sports context "Myanmar" is much more common. In a similar way, we refer to "Chinese Taipei" sports teams even if we don't use that name in non-sports contexts. More broadly, this country is undergoing a political reform process, and the Myanmar/Burma naming dispute has had a political basis, at least in part. Perhaps it's better to adopt a wait-and-see attitude, to see if ongoing political reconciliation brings about a naming consensus as well. — P.T. Aufrette (talk) 16:56, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose They are known as Myanmar in every sporting aspect as far as I know in every English speaking media i've ever seen. Can't really compare with North/South Korea which is a different kettle of fish. Everyone in Asian football refers to them as Myanmar, can't say the same for North/South Korea. Only the UK have I ever heard the news refer to the country as Burma and then send a reporter to Myanmar!! Druryfire (talk) 19:38, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Burma v. Myanmar and similar disputes may not always be totally straightforward, but once we have taken a definite decision it should be applied consistently unless there is a good reason to the contrary. PatGallacher (talk) 15:26, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • There is a good reason to the contrary: Common usage in sport differs from common usage elsewhere. Such splits exist in sport and there is precedent. (The best example I can think of is soccer being used in articles about Australia because that is common usage in Australia (and where association football can and does actually mean a sport that isn't soccer) but almost universally elsewhere, football or association football is used. FIFA and the IOC are two of the biggest sport governing bodies of sorts and their usage does lead the way for how sport reporting names the country. --LauraHale (talk) 20:36, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • Not disputing sports are sometimes known by different names in different countries, but that is a separate issue. PatGallacher (talk) 08:49, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • It is an example of common usage. Local common usage in the international sport community is that Myanmar is used ahead of Burma. Did you have an argument regarding common usage in sport as it pertains to Myanmar? --LauraHale (talk) 10:16, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Myanmar national football team[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Myanmar national football team's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "auto":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 02:43, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
