National Championship edits[edit]

75.65.8.7 edits are nothing more than an attempt at devaluing the accomplishments of the Ole Miss football program; trying to make them seem like they really aren't notable. That is POV and last I heard, wasn't acceptable on Wikipedia. The infobox already contains the championships as being "claimed" so there's no reason to make the changes being made by 75.65.8.7. But that also leads to another issue: These are championships awarded to Ole Miss, regardless of whether or not they are official NCAA championships. Ole Miss doesn't "claim" them but accepts them as they were given to them. Was the NCAA even in existence back in the old days when these championships were awarded to Ole Miss? Apparently there wasn't any "authority" for championships back then - no NCAA, no BCS.. just news organizations awarding championships, which means Ole Miss' aren't any less valuable than any awarded by the Associated Press back then. 75.66.75.195 (talk) 05:48, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am not trying to "devalue the accomplishments of the Ole Miss football program". The awarding or claims to national championships are a contested and debatable topic for all schools across the NCAA.
My case is simple:

  1. The NCAA has not awarded any team the title of National Champion for any of the years discussed
  2. As 75.65.8.7 has stated, this leaves only a collection of polls and journalists to award rankings
  3. Two of these organizations remain as respected authorities on rankings, and are still in use today: 1. AP Poll, 2. Coaches Poll
  4. Ole Miss was never ranked #1 in the two most respected polls, but was ranked #1 by other polls
  5. Because there is no clear cut awarding of a National Championship title, all the facts should be presented together
  6. Presenting only that there was a #1 ranking awarded implies that there was a clear title awarded, which is not true


The purpose of Wikipedia is to present all the facts and I believe I have accomplished that.
I agree with Uncle Milty's edits. I would be comfortable in accepting his changes.

But this article is about Ole Miss football, not all those other schools. It doesn't matter which polls were the "most respected", they are ALL nothing more than media polls and no single one, especially back then, was any more important than any other.. so yes, you are devaluing national championships that have been awarded to Ole Miss. If editors here reach a consensus on how the ranking should be stated in the article, the semiprotection can be lifted. Consider an WP:RFC if there are not enough participants. It sounds like the ranking issue may affect more articles than this one, so it might have already been discussed somewhere else. I have done some more research on this subject, mostly from Official 2009 NCAA Division I Football Records Book (PDF).. The NCAA does in fact recognize polls which it considers to carry more weight than other polls and calls them "Major Selectors". It even says which polls were considered major selectors for each year since 1869.

I think a reformat of this section would be appropriate. I would think the following changes would be appropriate:

  1. The bowl information should be moved to another section with historical information about bowl games. While they were the last games of the year, they were not championship games and have no more bearing on the championship than any other game
  2. It would be more informative to create two sections, one for major selectors awarding a number one ranking, and another section with other selectors awarding the number one ranking.

I believe this most accurately represents what was awarded to Mississippi and who awarded it. I also agree that it would help to have more people weigh in on this. I'll do some research to see if it has been discussed elsewhere.

According to Billingsley's official website (http://www.cfrc.com) Ole Miss was awarded the title by them in 1960 and 1962. (see http://www.cfrc.com/Archives/NC_Year_2008.htm). Can someone explain how "In 1959, Ole Miss finished 3rd in the SEC." when they only lost 1 game all season? The truth is, they were tied for second in the SEC according to http://www.secsports.com/news/default.aspx?ArticleId=296 and this should be changed. LSU beat Ole Miss during the regular season, a couple of weeks later Ole Miss beat LSU in the Sugar Bowl - this makes them tied for 2nd. 75.66.75.195 (talk) 08:54, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have started the 2010 season section. It's just one line for now. I will add content following each game. For the record, I am not an Ole Miss fan. 2001 Season[edit]

Whenever someone clicks on the link to the 2001 Ole Miss Rebels football team, they end up on this page. Also, nobody is able to create a page entitled 2001 Ole Miss Rebels football. The same issue exists for the 2007 Ole Miss Rebels football team. Can somebody please fix this redirect problem? Thanks.

Divisional Championships[edit]

Some annonymous IP keeps coming in and reverting the divisional championship notation to fractions, which is not the standard. I keep reverting the change but don't want to be accused of edit waring, because apparently being "right" isn't justification, so I'm pointing out the issue here. Ole Miss was not the first college team to fly to a game[edit]

FYI, here's a citation noting that UNM flew in 1929: http://newmexicohistory.org/people/the-flying-lobos So UNM is clearly first. However, only 11 players flew from UNM, the rest took the train; there's not much I could find to determine if Ole Miss was the first *entire* team to fly. Regardless, the article as it stands is factually incorrect, and should have that section either removed or amended to say something like "first entire team" to fly. Vandalism[edit]

With the recent developments in the NCAA case, almost every page relating to an Ole Miss football team has received and will continue to receive edits with incorrect information, the most common of these being wins from previous seasons being vacated from their record. You're right, but regarding this edit (I'm assuming you're IP 23.127.92.252); the paragraph that was removed seemed to be referring to Alabama's forfeited games in the series. This article repeats a lot of information and has some grammar and readability problems. I can try to tackle some of them myself, but some outside help would be appreciated by anyone who is willing.

time for "History of..." article[edit]

The Ole Miss Rebels football#History sections has many "era" subsections which have grown much too large for the main article. I suggest someone with interest tackle this as a project to:

  • Port some "History" section content (with attribution to this article) to a new "History of Ole Miss Rebels football" article containing this deeper detail. You can see 20 such team-specific "History of" articles at Category:History of college football by team.
  • Rewrite these "era" sections in this article taking a summary view (reduce specific game callouts, focus more on bowl/overall WLT record, championships, etc).

Matt Luke's time at Ole Miss as coaching[edit]

I see reports that [[Matt Luke (American football) was fired from Ole Miss today. There is no official announcement from the school themselves. Should we wait until the official announcement has been made? I have to keep reverting random IP's edits back to he was present. Let's tighten the History section[edit]

I propose to cut this article's History section down to a few lines per coach; there's no need to duplicate so much material available at History of Ole Miss Rebels football.
