It is not myth. This page says Gandhi thrown out of train as myth. This is incorrect. You have to read Gandhi autobiography and also other biographers detailed story. It is clear that he was humiliated because of his race. Please read http://www.progress.org/gandhi.

General deterioration of this page[edit]

Well, eek. I think what happened is that User:Carisse made some new user/sandbox changes to the page, and no-one picked them up, or reverted them, and people continued to work on the damaged page. I've restored the lost images, and a paragraph of text that was lost/mangled. At some point, I'll come back and do a more detailed, better referenced history section. The "description" section was also taken verbatim from a tourism website. While it's useful information, and probably needs to be incorporated, in that form it was copyvio, so I removed it. Sigh. Factual Accuracy[edit]

I thought I should comment on the text I put on this page (I wrote most of the page).

I'm not sure of the reason for naming the town "The place of the elephant" (I've made this clear in the article).
I'm not too sure about the city hall being the southern hemisphere's biggest red brick building. It's something I was told once, and not from a reliable source. It is a large, and signifant example of red brick architecture.
I'm also not so sure about the horse statue at the casino. It's pretty big, and again I was told that it was the biggest in the world, but that is also unreliable.

Anyway, hopefully someone (or myself) will find the time to verify these and correct them as necessary

I've edited some of the text about PMB's capital status as it came across as being potentially inflammatory.

Horse Statue[edit]

I have removed the section on the statue of the horse being the largest in the world, since it was by no means conclusive. I've found links that refer to the city hall being the largest all brick building in the southern hemisphere, so that can stay. ManicParroT 00:17, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Take 5[edit]

I've never heard of take 5, and I'm dubious of its value to this article. I'm going to delete it soon, unless I hear an explanation.

Take 5 was a one of the popular night spots frequented by university students (definately during the 90's) Anyone from PMB at that time would know Take 5 if only by reputation (this includes the older generation). For many young people it is a fond memory.

GHS[edit]

Does anyone know why Pietermaritzburg Girls' High isn't mentioned in the list of edciation institutions? It is one of the biggest girls schools in PMB and always won the swimming galas in the 90's...

Gandhi[edit]

"What actually happened is that [Gandhi] was not allowed to board a first-class carriage, even though he held a valid first-class ticket."

The scholarship - most recently, Rajmohan Gandhi's widely acclaimed Mohandas (Penguin 2006) - does not support this version at all. A more historically accurate version of this paragraph might read:

"Pietermaritzburg is also famous for an incident early in the life of Mahatma Gandhi. A white man objected to Gandhi's presence in a first-class carriage, and he was ordered to move to the van compartment at the end of the train. Gandhi, who had a first-class ticket, refused, and was thrown off the train at Pietermartizburg. Shivering through the night in the waiting room of the station, Gandhi made the momentous decision to stay on in South Africa and fight the racial discrimination against Indians there. Out of that struggle emerged his unique version of civil resistance, Satyagraha."

Moving list of educational stuff[edit]

This article seems to have bogged down a bit, in the sense that it hasn't progressed beyond the point of adequacy. I'm thinking that the educational institution section needs to be moved, or revised, and a bunch more content could go in. I'm going to start adding content, but the educational institution section is stumping me - perhaps it would be ideal to mention a couple of the bigger / more historic institutions, and just create another page with the list of educational institutions.

City Hall[edit]

Is it really likely that Pietermaritzburg City Hall is the largest brick building in the Southern Hemisphere? The turbine hall and chimneys of Athlone Power station in Cape Town are built of brick and look larger, and I doubt they are even the largest in South Africa, let alone the Southern Hemisphere. Jonathan Handley link[edit]

Near the foot of the page is a list of famous residents of Pietermaritzburg, including Jonathan Handley, founder of SA rock group, the Radio Rats. His name is linked but pressing this goes through to an entirely different man, who works or has worked for the British Defence Ministry. Needs to be removed (I don't know how). i have noticed that in your educational institutions section, you have left out M.L.SULTAN (PMB) SECONDARY SCHOOL which was founded in 1964 with the benevolence of the philanthropist Muhammad Lappa Sultan. It is ne of the oldest High Schoolsin Pietermaritzburg.

The schools started as a Technical High School and provided training for children in the Indian Community in the technical fields, Brick Laying, Carpentry, Metal Work and Welding, Motor Mechanics and Technical Drawing.

Today M.L. Sultan (PMB) Secondary stands provides excellent educational opportunities to childrem from more than 35 suburbs in and around Pietermaritzburg!

Kindly include this institution in your website.
