Centre[edit]

"Polski Ośrodek Społeczno-Kulturalny" actually translated into English as "Polish Social and Cultural Centre", not "Association".

The article should be retitled accordingly.

I tried Google Translate and this is confirmed. Suggest Polish Social and Cultural Centre is created? LoopZilla (talk) 10:34, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for confirming the proper English rendering. The present article just requires moving to "Polish Social and Cultural Centre". Nihil novi (talk) 19:06, 11 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
POSK's own English language website History refers to itself as Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) and the Charity Commission registration uses the title Polish Social and Cultural Association [1] so the current title seems appropriate, despite the literal translation of Ośrodek. Why in Hammersmith?[edit]

The siting of POSK in Hammersmith was not due to the relative proximity of St Andrew Bobola Church, Hammersmith as suggested by one editor. It was the result of a systematic analysis by Roman Wajda and his committee, of the dispersal of Polish settlement in West London at the time the project was being planned. (West London had the highest clustering by far, of Poles in London, despite there being substantial communities in South and South East London). In the early 1970s, house prices were a decisive factor in Polish "flight" out of RBKC and surrounding areas where they had settled during and after WWII. Families were expanding and the elders were dying out. The type of accommodation needed altered and the natural spread was to seek homes in Acton, Chiswick and Ealing. There were still Polish clubs, organisations and businesses in Kensington, so the compromise was Hammersmith with its excellent transport links. Po Mieczu (talk) 10:11, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
