Crowd noise during Delap's throw-ins[edit]

This is one of my favourite paragraphs ever on Wikipedia:

"It is now a normal occurrence to hear the Britannia Stadium home fans initiate a constant and expectant "woo"-sound (similar to that often heard at football grounds as a goalkeeper prepares to take a goal-kick) that gradually increases in volume and pitch from the moment Delap positions himself with ball in hand by the touch-line until the player embarks on his run towards the line and launches the ball on its airborne trajectory towards the opponents' box from his firm grasp. At that precise moment, the fans' sound concludes with a sharp synchronal climactic roar of "wahey". This both co-exists with and contributes to the suspense and anticipation that surrounds the overall technique and experience of witnessing the throw-in. For opposition defenders, it adds an element of psychological anxiety to the already tough physical task of defending against the throw."

It's academic, entertaining, enlightening and almost poetic. But I fear that some killjoy will take the view that it's not boring enough for Wikipedia and delete it from the main article, so I'm pasting it here for posterity. Russ London (talk) 08:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'll be reviewing this. Before even starting to review the prose and other criteria, there are some obvious concerns that should be adressed.

  • The lead is not long enough, and does not summarize the article
  • The first block of text under "Career" is unsourced
  • Almonst nothing is written about half his career, namely from 1994 to 2001. This is the most serious concern.
  • Many statements are unsourced, including the claimed length of his throws
  • The "International career" section is thin
  • The career statistics are somewhat dated (from December 2008)
  • Most of the section "Personal life" is unsourced

This is not enough to quick-fail the article, but the article has a long way to go before it can be considered as a Good Article candidate. Nonetheless, it will be put on hold for a week. Punkmorten (talk) 11:42, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of throw-in assists[edit]

Although he did play in the premiership with a number of teams before Stoke, i honestly don't think they used his throw to their advantage. I can assure you that there were several occasions at Southampton when his throw-ins caused havoc in the penalty area, some of which resulted in goals, but I don't have the time to find match reports. Personally, I think this whole section is highly over-blown. We don't list every corner kick that leads to a goal, so why this fuss about his throw-ins? I see your point, but i guess it's because it's out of the ordinary. I know other players have long throws, but i don't recall many of them being covered in the media as much. Highbeam research[edit]
