The winning links possessed by Salamanca.[edit]

Dear Sirs,

From one of the hyperlinks which has been placed on the web page associated with this discussion, I note that it is claimed that Salamanca is twinned with the City of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK. I work within the Civic Office within Cambridge City Council. I can confirm that the City of Cambridge possesses only two twinning relationships: with Heidelberg in Germany (since 1957), and with Szeged in Hungary (since 1987). There is no formal twinning relationship between the City of Cambridge and Salamanca. I would be grateful, therefore, if your editorial team would either remove or correct this reference.

Translation[edit]

Right now, I am working on a translation/improvement, based on the entry in the Spanish wikipedia. I have a working draft here. I've made one tiny change you might not care about: editing the picture captions to replace "XII century" and "XVI century" with "12th century" and "16th century". Roman numerals simply aren't used in standard written English to describe centuries - either the Arabic number is used or the number is given in words. You'll see "12th century" and "twelfth century", but you won't see "XII century" in works written by native English speakers. --NellieBly (talk) 19:12, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't mean to disparage your contributions, and I'm sure your 2009 translation was well accomplished, but currently there are barely understandable sentences that are clearly the product of feeding the Spanish-language article into Google translate. Is the opening sentence chauvinistic?[edit]

"Salamanca is an ancient Celtic city in northwestern Spain"

Edited first line[edit]

The first line said that Salamanca is an "ancient Celtic city". I have removed this for several reasons:

It is not an ancient city, it's a current city. Rome is not an ancient city, it is a city founded in ancient times which has mediaeval and modern additions. Same here. This is not Pompeii for example.

Merely being founded by Celts does not make it Celtic. Sydney is not a British city. Montreal is not a French city. This is romantic nationalism from one of two very different camps: either the Spanish extreme right, or the mostly left leaning but equally zealous pan Celtic movement in the British Isles.
