OSell is a Chinese cross-border e-commerce company with headquarters in the south western city of Chongqing in the Yuzhong District.[3] It provides business-to-business (B2B) sales services through its platform. It also features a trade fair and several exhibitions held under the umbrella of the OConnect brand.[6] The company is known for its original B2B2C approach that builds on China's popularity for cross border B2B e-commerce and on the country's position as the world's largest e-commerce market.[7]

OSell owns vast a network of warehouses and display centers throughout the world, which allow manufacturers to sell directly to retailers. The company's platform sources a range of products, from jewelry to electronics.[6] Osell has a prominent presence in the Chinese e-commerce industry, and is responsible for organizing and co-organizing related forums, summits and conferences, most notably, the China-Russia e-Commerce Summit held in Moscow, Russia held in 2015.[8]

According to popular traffic analysis site Alexa Internet rankings, its website ranked 375,709 in July 2016, a jump of nearly 62,500 places over previous three months.Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page). The data indicated a strong presence in the European market, especially in Turkey.[5] The company is a subsidiary of DinoDirect China Limited, and is supported by the local government.[9]

History[edit]

OSell was founded by Kevin Fenn in 2010.[2] Over the next two years, the company expanded its base, and established an office in Dubai, UAE.[1] The company showed fast growth, and, by mid 2013, its catalog featured the names of over 53,000 manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers from China with some 30 million items listed.[6]

The first few years of growth were crucial, as the company expanded rapidly by acquiring and partnering with other companies to increase the capacity of its consumer services. It co-organised several events promoting e-commerce in target countries. It made a definitive entrance into the Russian market with a three day exhibition connecting Russian retailers and Chinese manufacturers held in October-November 2014 in Gongguan, China.[10][11] In December 2014, it acquired the logistics and supply chain management company, TDPro, to provide faster delivery options in Russia.[4][12][13] In April 2015, OSell, along with prominent e-commerce company Alibaba, represented China at the first BRICS Expert Dialogue on e-Commerce held in Moscow, Russia. The dialogues are aimed at creating conditions for free e-commerce amongst BRICS countries.During the same month, it signed an agreement with UnionPay International enabling its overseas customers to pay using the Company's international cards.[14] Later in October, it co-organised the China-Russia e-Commerce Summit in Moscow, Russia.[8] By the end of 2015, it was one of six key entities in the cross border e-commerce market in China.[15]

In March 2016, an agreement to construct "two parks for two countries" was signed between OSell and the Czech Trade and Tourism Alliance.[16] In May 2016, it acquired the French company Comex, furthering its presence in the European market. A month later, the OSell group organized the China-Poland Online Silk Road Economic Cooperation Forum was organised in Warsaw, Poland as part of an official Chinese government visit to the country.[17]

Relations with the Chinese Government[edit]

OSell is one of four e-commerce companies to be ratified by the Ministry of Commerce.[18] In April 2016, it came to be officially recognized by Premier Li at Boao Forum for Asia’s Annual Conference.[18]

Focus[edit]

The OSell company primarily promotes products of Chinese origin while improving dialogue between inland, and cross border parties. Future plans are said to include building local experience centers, warehouses and after-sale services in cities along the "One belt and one road".[4] Covering 60 countries and a population of over 4 billion, this region's foreign trade volume is more than one trillion dollars.[19] In 2013, the Chinese Government first launched the concept of "one belt and one road" as a network of overland corridors across Central and Western Asia, connecting China and Europe.[4]This concept would also include a maritime route linking China with Southeast Asia as well as Europe and Africa.[13]The company owns several local experience centers, where prospective buyers can physically view products before ordering them. Additionally, strategically placed warehouses facilitate logistics and speed up delivery.

It also plans to focus on the concept of "two parks for two countries." This concept involves building two showrooms: one in China and the other in a foreign country, and each would showcase the other's products.

Services[edit]

OSell features a business to business platform that includes a range of provisions for both consumers and suppliers, like IT support, product quality check, payment management, delivery services and branding options.[20] The portal also has an anti-fraud system in place.[20] It works on the principle of globalized localized operations.[1]

Offices[edit]

The company is headquartered in Chongqing, with offices across China including cities like Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hefei and Mianyang.[21] Its global operations are run from Hong Kong[22] with worldwide offices in Moscow, Russia; Jakarta, Indonesia; Montreal, Canada and Canberra, Australia.[4]

Experience Centers/Warehouses[edit]

The company boasts of several 'experience centers' and warehouses placed strategically in various countries around the world. In early 2015, Moscow saw the first ever experience center. Domestically, the company has warehouses in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Urumchi.[20] Internationally, warehouses exist in Russia and Ukraine[4] with one opening soon in Toronto, Canada.[23][24]

Custom Clearance Platform[edit]

OSell plays a major role in way in the government regulated cross-border e-commerce custom clearance service platform, in Humen. Started in July 2014, this platform's main purpose is to ensure that business is conducted in a legal and transparent manner.[25][26] Four types of customer clearance services are featured, including general export, and online shopping bonded imports.[25]

Delivery and Transportation[edit]

Since its establishment, the company has expanded rapidly and currently (June 2016) delivers to 218 countries and districts.[27] Products to Europe are sent through the Yuxinou Railway, the Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe international railway.[28] It aims to transform this railway into the main route for all logistics handled by the company.

App[edit]

The company's B2B platform is offered through its app for both IPhones and android phones. Features include instant messaging and translation services for international buyers[29] as well as a global samples centre, order management and overview of OConnect showrooms.[30]
