deletion of uploaded image that is not used

hi could you please delete an image that i have uploaded with my previous username. there is no use of that image any longer. could you please let me know wether you can do that so that i can provide you with the the image and username. thanks :) Fkcuter123 (talk) 05:42, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I see three options:
  • You can log in with that username and mark it with a {{db}} tag (I think it's {{db-author}})
  • You could nominate it for deletion, either mentioning that you were the uploader or not, as an orphaned image
  • just leave it sitting out there until someone else comes along and decides it is not needed.
Hope this helps.  ★  Bigr Tex 19:50, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

wow wow so long ago you gave the answer and i did not check. if you are still around leave me a message. i am REALLY sorry that i did not get back to you. maybe you could run me through the steps. i dont know how to add the tag. if you login anytime soon, give me a shout and maybe you can help me. thanks Fkcuter123 (talk) 04:49, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

New image project

Hi. This little note is just to let you know that a proposal to merge the projects Wikipedia:WikiProject Free images, Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use, Wikipedia:WikiProject Moving free images to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia:WikiProject Illustration into the newly formed Wikipedia:WikiProject Images and Media has met with general support at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Files. In addition, I'm proposing merging Wikipedia:WikiProject Image Monitoring Group, because their aims seem to be very similar. Since you're on the rosters of membership in at least one of those projects, I thought you might be interested. Discussion about redirecting those projects is located here. Thanks. Better source request for File:HardWorkinMan.jpg

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 21:19, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:01, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Notification of automated file description generation

Your upload of File:BigrTex-Title.PNG or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! I'd like to invite you to add an Austin event for the Great American Wiknic. Please explain this close

I don't see a consensus to delete. Samsara 11:18, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Sure, I'm happy to explain. After being open for 40 days and with no discussion for almost half of that, some administrator needed to step in and make a call. I reviewed the Deletion guidelines for administrators, and specifically the section on Rough Consensus: "Consensus is not determined by counting heads, but by looking at strength of argument, and underlying policy (if any). Arguments that contradict policy, are based on opinion rather than fact, or are logically fallacious, are frequently discounted." In reviewing the arguments about Radon.jpg, those that spoke to the underlying policy (specifically [[WP:NFCC#1|]]) were weighted more than those that pointed out that it would be extremely difficult to replace the image, a point which I believe is inherent in the policy.  ★  Bigr Tex 14:46, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

Regarding File:Black Rhinoceros.jpg, this image was uploaded in 2005. We didn't really have these processes in place back then and the editing base was mostly much more conscious of such things, to the point where if someone from 2005 says they obtained a GFDL permission from the copyright holder and there is no evidence to the contrary, I'm usually inclined to take that at face value. Also, I am pretty sure, from looking at the deleted revisions of File:Thames Ditton Railway Bridge, United Kingdom.jpg that Etimbo is Tim Rogers. Certainly, the person who had it moved it to Commons thought so, as he or she credited the image as "Tim Rogers, aka Etimbo at en.wikipedia". --B (talk) 21:09, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

  • That's reasonable. Thanks for letting me know.  ★  Bigr Tex 21:35, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Peter Kennard @earth image

Hi there...perhaps we ought to clarify the origin of that image and contest that it is non-free. We are part of the team that created the book and the work itself and loaded the image onto Wiki at around the time of its release. Peter is also a firm believer in copy-left with regards to his work and although there is no 'site' that says this, there are a number of articles that quote it. Would be great if you could reinstate it. It is more representative of his more recent work than others. Would also be great if you could perhaps show us how to upload more images [marked ccbynd perhaps] for future use.

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, BigrTex. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi BigrTex.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

File:Iraq national football team logo.png

Hi BigrTex. The Commons file was deleted c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Iraqi Football Association's Official Logo.png. Some uploaded File:Iraq national football team logo.png for use in the team's article, but based on the previous FFDs regarding it, non-free use is only considered OK for the association's article. I removed it from the team's article per your close. If that's unacceptable, then please revert. I think the use is fine for the association's article and was going to add it, but I'm not sure a new upload is needed since the deleted File:Iraq Football Association logo.png now seems to be a candidate for WP:REFUND. Just for reference, the uploader of the deleted file Hashim-afc has been blocked per WP:SOCK, but he asked me for assistance at c:User talk: Hashim-afc#Iraq FA logo. I'm not really sure whether it's appropriate for me to be his editor-by-proxy, so maybe you wouldn't mind taking a look at that as well. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:37, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

@Marchjuly:, I recommend not being editor-by-proxy. I also notice that there is now File:Iraq National Football Team Shirt Badge.png on Commons that is PD. I encourage you to follow your muse.  ★  Bigr Tex 19:20, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your comment. I think I'm just going to step back now per your suggestion and also after seeing his latest reply on Commons. I've tried in good faith to explain the situation to him depsite being the target a few months back of some mean-spirited IP socking related to this file's use. Continuing to engage him may also embolden him to some more WP:NOTTHEM, which is not going to help him or anyone else. He'll hopefully return to constructive editing once his block has run out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:31, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Houston Community College logo is blurry

Hi - I saw you did some editing with the logo for Houston Community College. The logo as it appears in the article's infobox is very blurry, but when I look at the image on file [[2]] it looks fine. I tried to change the resolution down to 100px but it didn't improve anything. Is there some hidden setting that degrades the image for copyright purposes? TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 17:42, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

@Timtempleton:, I didn't see any blur on my computer the first few times that I looked at it. Then it started. It could be because it is a jpg and was close but not exactly the size that the infobox was displaying it, or could be something about the grey that it was being displayed on. I've added a logo_size parameter to the infobox to display the logo at the actual size of the jpg file, which I don't think throws off the proportions of the page drastically. Take a look and let me know what you think. Also take a look at other pages that use the {{Infobox university}} and see if they are doing similar things with logos if you have some time. Thanks for pointing it out.  ★  Bigr Tex 20:25, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:17, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I notice you're able to find fair use images for infoboxes, as you did for Jeff's Gourmet Sausage Factory. Would you happen to know of a fair use image for this new restaurant article? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 13:15, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Happy to do so. I actually uploaded it to Commons because I felt it qualified for {{PD-textlogo}}.  ★  Bigr Tex 20:43, 19 May 2019 (UTC)
