There are quite a few circumstances where it's okay to reformat other people's comments. See WP:TPO. "Fixing format errors ... include fixing indentation levels" is explicitly allowed. —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 01:46, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Talk header discussion

There's a discussion regarding the injunction not to place {{Talk header}} on a blank talkpage. It was pointed out that you added the advice in 2007. Looking into the history of the template, it appeared to me that you might have added that advice because there were a handful of users who disliked the template because it turned talkpage links blue, and you added that advice as a concession to them. If I have got that wrong, or you wish to join the discussion, it's at: Wikipedia talk:Talk page guidelines#Do not create a page solely to place the Talk header template on it?. Abort, Retry, Ignore

Sure go ahead and edit the page. I still feel that anybody understanding that article is well aware that MSDOS was command line oriented. I really feel that is irrelevant, as A,R,I would pop up during programs that took over the screen and did menus. The real reasons for it are the need to be compatible with CP/M (where on most machines a disk missing from a drive would make the call to open a file block until a disk was inserted, therefore a lot of software assumed that the only possible result for creating a file was an opened file).

It certainly was Abort, Retry, *Ignore* in the version most users see. By the time Microsoft added "Fail" most software that took over the screen had also replaced the handler, so users did not see this anywhere near as much. I do remember that faking "fail" was a real pain in MSDOS2 and required unwinding the stack through the MSDOS system, a kludge that was very unstable and Microsoft was forced to remain compatible with the dozens of methods software used to fake this.

I think the important points are:

• Doing "Fail" ALWAYS would have been a much, much, much, much (...) better solution and could have been done even on a "primitive command-line-oriented system" as you call it (which is the real reason I do not like that text). This would not be incompatible with CP/M software, as it would simply act as though the file was not found, which I cannot think of any examples where this would be worse than the program crashing immediately. This is an inexcusably bad design by Microsoft.
• This is an excellent example of cryptic error messages. The information it presents is perfectly accurate but has nothing to do with what the user wants to know or wants to do. This is a design problem that still exists today. Lots of programmers just think if the errors are "pretty" and antialiased and non-modal and have "help" buttons and other crap that it is fixed, but it is not at all. "Abort, Retry, Ignore" would be equally bad no matter how beautiful the pop up error box is. This is the other reason I don't like that "command line oriented" text.
