The copyediting tiger is back...[edit]

I have been particularly vicious in Battle of Apple River Fort and left lots of <!--COPYEDITOR'S NOTE:-->'s all over the place. I'll make sure I'm online tonight (UK time...let's say up to midnight) so that I can help you with that. About to turn my attention to Horseshoe Bend... Cricketgirl 17:58, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have been equally evil at Battle of Horseshoe Bend (1832). Good luck! Cricketgirl 18:23, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I was terse/overly nit-picky in my school-ma'am-with-red-pen routine. It's always a pleasure to copyedit for you, and you seem a little stressed... Hope everything's ok. Cricketgirl 11:24, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Been through both of them again now, they both look good to me. I had a question, which is relevant in both, although I only corrected it in Apple River (because I'm not sure if I'm right!) - see the talk page. Good luck at GAC with those! I'm off to bed now, but I'll check in the morning in case you've had any more questions/ideas. Cricketgirl 23:38, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem[edit]

Sorry about that, I misread how the sentence was written. Thanks for catching it though and I have passed the article for the sweeps. I'm sure I'll run into a few more of your articles before I'm done with all of the "conflicts" articles, so don't hesitate to correct me if I incorrectly reword anything else. Keep up the good work with the GAs! --Nehrams2020 21:28, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll leave a message on your talk page for any more of the articles I review of yours. It will probably be between this month and November at latest, but most likely to October. --Nehrams2020 23:06, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's still going to take place once a year, but it hasn't been done very throughly in a while. Right now there are about ten or so editors who are rereviewing articles, and we're planning on looking over all of the current ~2,800 GAs. I've reviewed about twenty of the "conflicts" articles so far since I adopted that section, and have about forty articles to go before I move on to another topic. There has been a lot of articles delisted, since many articles were passed before the current standards, and many more have been put on hold until small issues have been addressed. You can read more about the sweeps here. --Nehrams2020 23:12, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Byron Nuclear Plant[edit]

Hi Ivo, I added a few more comments to the peer review after some copyedits and would be glad to look it over again once you have tweaked it based on / after my suggestions. Is there any WikiProject you could ask for advice on it? As for myself, I will be submitting an article to Peer Review later this week, with hopes to take it to FA. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:31, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have always left a notice on relevant WikiProject talk pages when I put an article up for FAC. Maybe that would be better at this stage than another PR request, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:39, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of UIS Journal[edit]

UIS Journal, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that UIS Journal satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/UIS Journal and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of UIS Journal during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Frank L. Smith Bank and Dwight, Illinois[edit]

Since you just finished creating Frank L. Smith Bank, could you look into sourcing the statement that of three F.L.Wright-deigned banks, it "is the only one still operating as a bank today." in Dwight, Illinois? Circeus 05:09, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And thanks for the barnstar. Your own work on history has prompted me to work more on Quebec history (science history, actually) myself. Circeus 05:11, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Template Barnstar

Ending suspension?[edit]

Your comments on the ending of the suspension of WP:FPC#Four-seam_fastball_by_Chris_Young are welcome.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:20, 1 October 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Do you remember what talk pages we debated the template at?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 14:45, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you notice the new template feature that puts the article in the Category:Articles actively undergoing construction when the template is in the article space and the template takes on a different appearance on the talk page. You should look at the current version of the template.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:14, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I thought you previously were against {{underconstruction}}. To say I ignore all opinion is so far of an exaggeration, I would tend to ignore it:-) More precisely, I have made tremendous changes in the template that vastly tone down WP:ASR concerns. The template serves a purpose of telling the users it is under construction and why.
Can you explain equating addressing complaints about a template and continuing its use after addressing complaints to ignoring all complaints?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:32, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Knock wood) Almost all complaints were about WP:ASR violations with the numerous links to various pages of WP:CHICAGO and WP:CHICOTW and the huge bold fonts. I have not received any complaints in the last several weeks and numerous DYKs. I think September was a personal high in DYKs and I had no {{CUR-CHICOTW}} complaints. The debates have not been very organized because they have taken place at T:TDYK and various odd places, so it is hard to track down exact phrasing, but I had no complaints in my most active DYK month so I assume the problem has been resolved with the latest editorial changes to the template.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:48, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I should congratulate you because I think you are going to pass me on WP:GAs if you haven't already.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:48, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bricks[edit]

I managed to get my changes in - I wasn't entirely sure how the conflict resolution worked, but I think I've got it now. I did manage to eliminate my question on the second attempt though: were the bricks in France uniquely proportioned ("were only found in France"), or have they been discovered ("have been found in France")? I look forward to seeing the additions; brick stamps sound interesting. Do you have anything on modern use of Roman bricks outside the US? I'm intrigued to know if they are still used elsewhere. Re: A class reviews[edit]

The articles that are already GAs could probably be viable candidates; there's no guarantee that they'll pass the first time, but you'll have something concrete to work with even if they don't.

On a side note, {{Black Hawk War (1832)}} should probably be converted to use the standard style documented at WP:MILMOS#NAV at some point. Kirill 04:15, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I personally heavily dislike these military navigation boxes (we have too many different things that prop in the top left corners.). A style closer to band articles templates (without subfolding section, see e.g. {{Aerosmith}} or {{U2}}) is what I would normally expect. Circeus 04:24, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Keep in mind that the military navbox style supports full-width boxes as well; see, for example, {{Civil War DC forts}}. The overall style remains the same, though, regardless of which option is used. Kirill 04:39, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nope; see my comment just above. It's the style rather than the position we're trying to standardize. (Indeed, given how many entries are in this template, the small-width option wouldn't really work very well anyways.) Kirill 04:41, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The simplest way of doing it would be something like this; but variations to the layout are obviously possible, depending on what exactly you prefer. Kirill 04:49, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for those pictures of Kinzua bridge and creek. I rearranged the pics in the bridge and park articles to add one of each. DYK expired noms[edit]

Please can we take this discussion to the talk page, rather than edit warring on the update page -- I was actually trying to remove EncycloPetey's hidden comments so as to update the page with the extra items and clear the backlog when you reverted my change. Regards, Espresso Addict 14:35, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note -- I probably shouldn't have used rollback to restore the deleted items (being the project's most dilettante admin, it's actually the first time I've ever used it!) -- sorry! I couldn't find the items readily elsewhere and it seemed the easiest way of restoring them quickly. We then had an edit conflict when you undid my rollback where I was trying to remove the unhelpful hidden comments. I think we should go with the expired noms, which looked fine to me, unless there's any other problem with them? Regards, Espresso Addict 14:53, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to revert to the version with the (gasp) expired noms, since it seems like more people are for including them than excluding them. Please don't revert my changes, but comment at the talk page if you really think there is some reason they shouldn't be used other than spite. And then take a break; you're a really good contributor and it will be sad to see you go if you're really that frustrated. Rigadoun (talk) 15:26, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever is currently on the page, it's blocking access from our school district. The page contains a "banned phrase" according to our protection software. If this content is put up on the main page, it will block access to Wikipedia itself from numerous schools. Sorry I can't be more specific about the problem, but I can't see the page content because of our district's filtering software. --EncycloPetey 15:20, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your suggestion[edit]

Ivo,

Thanks for suggesting that I get in touch with local officials regarding sourcing that. Actually, the other hook was probably better anyway, and as a matter of fact I'm well acquainted with our town historian (a position every municipality in New York is required to appoint someone to, although it's usually unpaid) and have been sharing printouts of all the NRHP articles I've created pertaining to our town and its three villages (we've been doing quite well in getting listings, actually ... I'm surprised). You might find this article about our town's efforts to preserve our historic properties interesting (and it's just about the ones in the town, not the villages).

That's our loss. You should, however, read something into the fact that you very nearly achieved a consensus figure, despite the recency of the dodgy behaviour... if you ran again in a month or two, I think it'd be a snowball, especially if nominated by a couple of uncontentious nominators in good standing. Yeah, the book with the bloody long title, though the page has been changed to James the Brother of Jesus (book). He actually did create the article, as part of trying to mediate discussion on the Ebionites article, no less. I think that qualifies for real recognition. The fire tower barnstar[edit]

Thanks! It never fails to amaze me how you never get barnstars when you're expecting them, but only when you're not.

Actually, there are four other firetowers in the Catskills on the Register (the listing was part of the strategy behind keeping them in place). I have a picture of the one on Balsam Lake Mountain; this weekend my son and I are hopefully going to visit the one on Red Hill (the very last one to be closed). As for Overlook and Tremper, I'll have to look on Flickr unless I get up there myself soon. And here in Orange County we have the one on Sterling Mountain; the last one still in use (at least at the turn of the century). I'm sure there are others in other mountainous areas (the Forest Fire Lookout Association has been working to preserve and rebuild them). Daniel Case 20:43, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proper protocol for List of the Day proposal[edit]

I think my proposal is ready. I have never made as far reaching of a proposal before. What would be the proper protocol for officially announcing my proposal (WP:LOTDP)? Should I place it at the Featured List talk page Main page talk page, Featured content talk page, Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals), or all of the above?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 21:04, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I will probably announce the proposal tomorrow. You only think I should post it at the Village Pump? I think I should at least also post a link on the FL talk page. What was your thinking with suggesting Village pump? I get your point about only 401 lists. There have been more than 401 counting WP:FLRCs. My point is that we have 401 current (1 years supply for the main page), are producing over 30 a month now. When WP:TFA started (2004-02-22) they only had about 200 WP:FAs and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I also think the quality of the FLs now is at least as good as the FAs were in February 2004.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 21:26, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In order to make the proposal brief I eliminated sections discussing the merits of a new section at the bottom or taking half of the WP:POTD section. I also think saying we only have 4 good lists a month worth featuring is a bit pessimistic. Should I make it clear that this discussion attempt to limit discussion to this proposal and not get thrown off track by a myriad of alternate proposals that others could come up with. Of the 400 current featured lists, there must be about 200 that you would feel good about seeing on the main page. Of the 40 or so produced in each of the last two months, I would think at least half of these are main page worthy. If these two things are true we are at least where TFA was when it started. I do think the surest way to derail getting Lists on the main page is to get a bunch of people throwing out various ideas and hope that this does not get torpedoed with such discussions. --TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 21:39, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You have lost me. What would be the purpose of doing weekly instead of daily if we have sufficient quality lists. Did TFA or POTD start with weekly or did they just jump on the main page with daily editions. I am fairly certain both started as daily.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 21:57, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

Thanks I was fixing double redirects (a necessity, of course), and I figured I would go ahead and fix the in-text ones as well. It was a capricious decision and I'm hardly committed to it. DYK[edit]

Here I am with another DYK message:

Updated DYK query On 12 October, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Execution of Lucy and James Sample, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Wow, you're prolific. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 04:28, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I sort of forgot about this one:
Updated DYK query On 12 October, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Minor attacks of the Black Hawk War, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.
The hardest part about updating DYK putting the DYK notices on the article talk pages and onto the user talk pages (like this one), and then I need to copy the results to Wikipedia:Recent additions. It's a lot of work, and it would be great if there was a way to automate it. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way to automate it, or even semi-automate it, yet. There's also the business of making a protected copy of the image, if it's on the Commons, so vandals can't upload vulgar replacement pictures on the Commons. I never realized how much work DYK was until I became an admin and decided to start updating it. On the other hand, having new and interesting articles at DYK is a good thing, since it encourages people to write good articles. So, in other words, keep submitting new articles at DYK, by all means. Eventually, I'll figure out a way to automate the busywork. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 04:43, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox_nrhp: thanks for patience/star[edit]

12-Oct-07: Hi, IvoShandor. Wikid77 here. Thank you for your patience, fixes, and barnstar. That Template:Infobox_nrhp was frying my brain, so I hadn't taken the time to respond to you. I was able to debug the logic in an alternate variation, Template:Infobox_nrhp_map, which allows both the top-image and a small bottom-map. As you might know, it wasn't until expanding with an alternate version that I understood the problems in the original. More below. -Wikid77 05:09, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox_nrhp_map[edit]

12-Oct-07: The alternate variation for Infobox_nrhp, Template:Infobox_nrhp_map, allows exploring new options, such as allowing both the top-image and a small bottom-map. Upgrading the original template would be too disruptive now, until new options are settled. The future I see is for an Infobox with optional top-banner markers (corner icons), and the bottom-map with a custom marker, such as a house symbol or cannon symbol on a battlefield, etc. It should also be possible to generate a small scrollable map within an infobox, to allow users to scroll across a historic site in a smaller scroll viewport, while reading the rest of the article. Even though video is typically slow, a scrollable map/image can be quite fast, and I see scrolling as a stepping stone to the day wiki-videos are more common. For now, view that new infobox in article "Monticello" for a preview of Infobox_nrhp_map. Thanks. -Wikid77 05:09, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tiny bottle[edit]

I have no idea what that could be. I wouldn't have thought a tiny Coke bottle would have been much of a draw. A giant one maybe, but a tiny one seems pretty run-of-the-mill. As to the five articles in one go, it looks fine to me. Is there a policy against it? The alternative would be five separate nominations which would either make it "Did you know? (Orangeville Edition)" or lead to your nominations being discarded, which doesn't seem fair. I'm not sure whether Matisse's comment was serious; he doesn't give much context. You do crank them out at a fair old pace, though luckily the quality doesn't seem to suffer as a result. Andplus 08:47, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed the outdented section. Just ignore him (as I've seen you decided to do anyway), life's too short. Andplus 14:32, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Per your request I've done a ce of Sinsinawa Mound raid. One question for you:

This sentence (from the last section):

strikes me as a little confusing, because I can't see where it fits into the context of its surroundings. Was Col Dodge responding to the raid by turning out more militia forces, or does 'militia' in the sentence refer to Stephenson's men being re-routed somewhere else (ie the search being called off)?

Regards, EyeSereneTALK 17:11, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments. I think you've made that much clearer. To be honest there wasn't much to do, but, as you say, another pair of eyes... ;) EyeSereneTALK 17:23, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A third pair of eyes[edit]

I also did some copyedits - moved the wikilink on British Band to its first appearance, added US to first sentence, made Platteville just the city name (as it was not part of Wisconsin then). Question 1 - is it normal to refer to US Territories without a definite article? To my ear, "settlement in the Michigan Territory" and "governor of the Indiana Territory" sound better, but if this is not the standard formaulation, never mind. Question 2 "Finding no allies, he attempted to return to Iowa..." can you call it Iowa when it was still a territory and not yet the state? I also tweaked the date formulations for the "The week before the Battle of Apple River Fort (on June 24)..." sentence to hopefully be clearer. In "Prelude", do you really need to repeat the last sentence "The attack at Sinsinawa Mound occurred the same week as the battles of Kellogg's Grove and Apple River Fort.[12]" given the same information in the "Background" section? I switched "Jones's" to the descriptive adjective "Jones" twice in "Attack".

In "Aftermath" you mention Jones being elsewhere when the attack occurred - why not put this info in the Prelude too? I had just assumed he was at the fort during the attack until I read this. I made a few other minor tweaks - finally, this seems a tad over wikilinked. Based on Peer Review and FAC comments, I usually try for one wikilink per term per article (with duplicates in the infobox not counting). If an unusual term is in several sections I can perhaps see wikilinking it in each section, but this had several places with the same wikilink repeated in the same section. I removed some, but did not get them all.

Sorry to be slow on this - a perfect Wiki storm is brewing for me. Dincher and I just submitted a list to WP:PR (hoping to get the FL), Larrys Creek is going to be WP:TFA on October 19, so I am doing lots of nitpicky stiff there, and I have an article in WP:FAC (although it has not gotten much feedback yet, so that has been less work, though frustratingly slow). Overall a good article and congrats on the five DYKs in one blow - amazing! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:20, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at Plum River raid, I am having trouble understanding this sentence: "Present at the settlement, Hays and Goss were trying to round up livestock, while Davidson had left the area in search of a horse, only Pierce remained at the blockhouse." I know there were 6 men present originally and when the raiders attacked only 3 were there. I tried tweaking it, change as needed. Also if you know where Blundell was, please add that. I also clarified it was horses wounded and killed. Finally for both of these articles, it would be useful to give rough distances (i.e. ...from Galena, about 10 miles (16 km) away...), so there is some idea of the distances involved. Another good job here too. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:27, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Your edits to Sinsinawa Mound raid look fine. Thanks for the Larrys Creek comments - I will answer them there. If you feel like it, we could use PR feedback here. I will be glad to look at Plum River again once you work on it - forgot to mention there - did the settlement have a name then? The article refers to it as modern Savanna, and once as Savanna back then I think. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:24, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the FA congrats - I have made most of the chnages you suggested at Larrys Creek, but still need to write the bridge and list articles. I can add the blue creek path to the relief map, but will save it to last as it will take longest. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:32, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well I think it is awesome. Wikipedia needs more people like you who focus on writing quality articles. You and User:Senkang from Singapore are excellent at this' It never ceases to amaze me how many people would rather argue and get in your way just for the sake of it rather than contribute to articles themselves. When they see you contribute all some people can do is criticise it!!. But always remember there are many like myself who always appreciate it even if they don't let you know about it. For me an important aspect of wikipedia is adding localized knowledge , it is this which makes this an outstanding resource. Keep up the great work. Thanks for the medal! I remember timidly submitting my first DYK back in May and I was call-my-mom excited when it showed up on the main page (no, not literally). Hard to believe I've passed the 25 threshold!

PS I want to echo what Sir Blofeld said above. You're a great editor, someone I really admire at this project. It's an unfortunate fact of life that greatness at anything attracts the spiders. Spiders have nothing to contribute to the world (or the wiki) but they draw their strength from preying on stronger creatures. You attract the spiders because you are good and they are worthless. Don't let that get you down -- the wiki is full of crazy people and spiders and vultures and trolls -- but it's full of good people too. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say the good editors really appreciate having you in their company.

Cheers and thanks again! --JayHenry 03:23, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ivo,

It was great to see your contributions to DYK and the great amount of enthusiasm you showed to the project. Please reconsider your decision. I hope that you reconsider too. You bring much to this project. You have written many interesting articles about my neighboring state to the south. I have experienced wikistress at times too. The best way to deal with it is the click the red X in the upper right, and take off at least a week. After returning, I decided to not watch most types of discussions (since they cause wikistress) except if they directly involve something that I know very well. If something else caused you wikistress, then you should avoid it as much as possible if you return. Royalbroil 17:15, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know, you really shouldn't be letting these morons on the Wikipedia bother you. Just ignore their comments, make your own back at them, and move on. I will be home tomorrow night, and really hope that you will have reconsidered by then. This guy got exactly what he wanted, which was to drive you from DYK and the Wiki. 21 Illinois articles in October is awesome! About Mattisse[edit]

You might not want to talk about that user anymore, but a lot of people have had problems with him. I made an RfC with another user a few weeks ago about Mattisse, but unfortunately not many people looked into it enough to know exactly what was going on. But the funny thing is, me and the other nom also noticed Mattisse's passive-aggressiveness and we talked about it on the RfC. Obviously he was being sarcastic with that comment on DYK's talk page, tried to incite you and get you to lash out, then claim he did nothing wrong. This is nothing new for Mattisse. Please look at Mattisse's contribution history. Just a couple of days ago he nominated for deletion per copyvio for dozens of his own articles. I hope you feel OK enough to comment about this situation and Wikipedia can get together to do something about it. - Cyborg Ninja 04:07, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
