IRC office hours for wiki-mentors and Snuggle users[edit]

Hi. We're organizing an office hours session with the Teahouse to bring in mentors from across the wiki to try out Snuggle and discuss it's potential to support mentorship broadly. The Snuggle team would appreciate it if you would come and participate in the discussion. We'll be having it in #wikimedia-office connect on Wed. July 17th @ 1600 UTC. See the agenda for more info. --EpochFail(talkwork), Technical 13 (talk), TheOriginalSoni (talk) 17:37, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki-edit contest[edit]

The Biophysics wiki-edit contest was over yesterday, and I think we're in pretty good shape, even in geographical and subject-matter diversity. Of the 16 people who signed up, 7 have made very respectable entries, 2 did a trivial amount, and the rest did nothing at all. So our task now is to decide which 6 of the 7 should win, give all of them feedback on their articles, help them fix minor issues, and see if there are any that could be worked up to Good status, have a DYK, etc.

I'll send a short message to the 7 entrants in the running, who are:

  • pablo.gainza - Protein design
  • danielkeedy - Protein dynamics
  • Mgrosasco - Voltage sensitive phosphatase
  • Jkriege2 - Light sheet fluorescence microscopy
  • Jajava - Membrane fluidity (also edits to Membrane lipids, Physics of skiing)
  • Shanata - Single-molecule experiment; Model lipid bilayer
  • LeDucdAuge - Photoactivated localization microscopy

How about each of us pick a couple of entries we'd like to judge in detail, then correlate (hopefully in the next few days) to make sure all are covered by 1 or 2 judges? My preferred 2 would be Protein dynamics and Protein design. If it suits them, I'd suggest that Keilana and RockMagnetist do only one entry in detail, but go thru all the articles for style, format, policies, & possible upgrades. (Anyone else is of course also encouraged to make such comments.)

For confidentiality, I'd suggest that you send evaluative comments, and we work out the initial entry assignments, thru email - I'm at jsr@kinemage.biochem.duke.edu. We need to work out who's doing what as soon as feasible, so we can proceed asynchronously thru vacation schedules. (Thus a warning - if you don't reply with your preferences soon, you may get stuck with what others didn't want!) But we don't need to settle on the 6 winners until early Sept, so we can take into account how the entrants respond to our feedback, as well as correlating all our overall impressions. - Dcrjsr (talk) 17:23, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! That sounds great, I'll send you an email right away. Thanks for thinking through the logistics of this. Keilana|Parlez ici 21:03, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE July 2013 news report[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

Userification request[edit]

Hi Keilana :) I've been looking through some archives at deleted articles, and I believe Robert Babikan, which you deleted after an AfD discussion, is now notable enough for an article. As a result, could you restore the article into my user area? That way, we keep together the page history, and I (possibly) have to spend less time redoing the article. Thanks in advance :) Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 08:50, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Luke! I've restored it to User:Lukeno94/Robert Babikan, good luck with the article! Best, Keilana|Parlez ici 13:36, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles deletion[edit]

Dear Keilana,

I apologize for the inconvenience, but have no other way than appealing for administrators’ help recover a deleted article.

I published a film article entitled Drits (Derivas), a film by Portuguese director Ricardo Costa. It is the second film from an autobiographic trilogy, Faraways. The article was kept untouched by several months. To my surprise, it was recently eliminated and redirected to the director’s page with no discussion. I undid the redirection, but saw the article was proposed to deletion. Reason: independent, verifiable, secondary resources. I argued that the article couldn’t have but primary sources (the producer’s ones) as it is an upcoming film, like many others listed at upcoming films. A film that has not yet been premiered or distributed may not be commented. Besides, none of the films so listed has ever been deleted or even contested.

At last, in discussion, user User:reddogsix proposed that the article should be renamed to Drifts (film) or similar, and at the same time put at the disambiguation page of Dritf this reference «Drifs, unreleased film by Ricardo Costa (filmmaker). I created a new page for the same article entitled Drifts (Portuguese film). As the semantic root “drift” seemed to be the problem, I replaced the article name to Derivas (Drifts) and published it once more with some improvements. As a result, the article was fast deleted and I blocked for three days.

In the meantime, a new article about the trilogy was published: Faraways, which was proposed to fast deletion as well by the same user, User:reddogsix.

Although unreleased, although having no reliable secondary sources, Drifts is unquestionably an outstanding film for its uniqueness and characteristics: autobiography, comedy, docufiction, metafiction in one. I guess that “outstanding” may be a synonym for “notable” in such cases and that articles like this shouldn’t be deleted without previous cared analyses: important information may be lost.

This sequence of interventions is clearly a personal attack by User:reddogsix, supported by two or three user friend. It has no other explanation. It contributes in nothing to improve articles quality. Mists article, which I created on 10 September 2010, is the latest example. The article structure was unreasonably modified, loosing clarity and useful content.

NOTE: sent to 30 administrators.

Thanks for your attention, User:Tertulius 22:56, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2013 July newsletter[edit]

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Canada Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, London Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Poland Piotrus (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.

Other than that, there is not much to report! If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Keilana, this is super! I just started putting our new course page together yesterday, and already an offer from an OA, AND a budding biologist at that! My students are going to be thrilled (although they don't realize it yet) that a 'peer' bio student is going to be our go to Wikipedia guru!! I'll share with you some of the 'reflection' comments students gave me at end of semester related to their work on wikipedia. Several discovered their 'hidden geek'. I'm also professionally interested in how wikipedia assignments and their impact on student learning are being assessed, etc. Given your current lab interests, I'll see if I can get a student interested in a Drosophila development related stub. Looking forward to chatting with you much more. Very psyched for the new semester. (Also- have you ever thought of working on the article about Nicole Marthe Le Douarin? She did AMAZING work creating chimeras of quail and chick embryos- which required cutting out and switching tiny bits of neurula stage neural tube between quail and chick embryos and making major contributions to the understanding of neural crest cells.) I'm working on starting one but it's very slow going. Perhaps we can learn together? :) Keilana|Parlez ici 08:30, 9 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page appearance: Auriga (constellation)[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Auriga (constellation) know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on August 17, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or one of his delegates (Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs)), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/August 17, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

A representative sketch of the constellation

Auriga is one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy and remains one of the 88 modern constellations. Its name is the Latin word for "charioteer", associating it with various mythological charioteers including Erichthonius and Myrtilus. Auriga is most prominent during winter evenings in the Northern Hemisphere, along with the five other constellations that have stars in the Winter Hexagon asterism. Because of its northern declination, Auriga is only entirely visible as far as 34° south. A large constellation, with an area of 657 square degrees, it is half the size of the largest constellation, Hydra. Its brightest star, Capella, is an unusual multiple star system among the brightest stars in the night sky. The resultant of its position near the winter Milky Way, Auriga has many bright open clusters in its borders, including M36, M37, and M38, popular targets for amateur astronomers. In addition, it has one prominent nebula, the Flaming Star Nebula. In Chinese mythology, Auriga's stars were incorporated into several constellations, including the celestial emperors' chariots, made up of the modern constellation's brightest stars. Is there a barnstar for "Crushing it at a dinner party table full of cognoscenti"? You were definitely the most interesting person in the room :) When I got home, I told my wife about you and said I hope our daughter grows up to know so much about the world and to make similarly meaningful contributions.

Hope to run into you again sometime.

all best wishes, Matthew (WMF) 22:17, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Last time I told my wife about a really cool girl I met, she didn't take it too well... anyways, seems you've made a stir Kei! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:46, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm just jealous ya'll went to Hong Kong while I'm stuck here in Canada. Psht. Dusti*Let's talk!* 00:35, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Crisco - psh. It was definitely those brown velvet shoes that made a stir... Keilana|Parlez ici 00:42, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am so flattered, Matthew, by your kind words. I really enjoyed meeting you and hearing everything you had to say at dinner, and I do hope we cross paths again soon. Keilana|Parlez ici 00:42, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't be flattered, you probably deserve it. I wish you had been elected for arb, you would have know to make people talk to each other. - But now you decided never to apply again, and I guess I come to see why. My attempt was this. What yould you have said? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:49, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Gerda. I just wish people would remember everyone else's humanity and treat each other with kindness and respect, but I don't know how to make them do that. Keilana|Parlez ici 16:14, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Probably being nice with other people even if they don't treat people kindly... that will show them that civility is the right path to follow :) Oh, and sorry for poking my nose in this. Miss Bono [zootalk] 16:51, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That and more face to face meetings--so much harder to troll me when you look me in the eye. Incidentally, lots of people were talking about Keilana's presentation as well. She made a great impression on a lot of people. Matthew (WMF) 17:48, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Matthew. I strongly regret not being there. I think I will never be able to attend to any of those meetings... :'( except if one of those is in Cuba. Miss Bono [zootalk] 17:56, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Matthew - you flatter me! But I agree, it's so much easier to get over conflicts and build rapport in person. I wish I could solve all of my onwiki conflicts with a coffee meeting and a little in-person compassion. It's so easy to forget that the words on the screen are being written by humans with feelings and lives. Keilana|Parlez ici 20:18, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Miss Bono: Wikimania in Cuba sounds awesome! (he says from his personal capacity and in no way representing the Wikimedia Foundation or its assigns:) Matthew (WMF) 23:02, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Matthew (wmf): Yeah, I dream of that. Hopefully one day I can be at a Wikimania meeting :)... Miss Bono [zootalk] 12:03, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hong Kong was close to me...but bad timing :P ...anyway, Keilana, am trying for a mighy 5x expand of Pavo (constellation) - target is > 1505 words. Finally played around with Phoenix (constellation) and am quite happy with it - it's at FAC. I think we all need to have a look at Perseus too. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 12:14, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Casliber: If you want help with Pavo, I'm happy to contribute. Sandbox or mainspace? I'll drop a review of Phoenix off in the next few days and see what's up with Perseus. :) Keilana|Parlez ici 17:41, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Mainspace is fine - I virtually never use sandbox but I generally edit low-traffic articles anyway...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:18, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, once I'm through moving in I'll start doing some work. :) Keilana|Parlez ici 19:31, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this. Coming back after an absence to find that an article you started has been drastically expanded is one of the unique joys of contributing to Wikipedia.

Disambiguation link notification for August 25[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Fatimata Seye Sylla, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page OSIRIS (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

WikiCup 2013 August newsletter[edit]

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:

  1. Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
  2. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
  4. Canada Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
  5. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), the winner of the 2010 competition. His contributions mostly concern Naval history, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
  6. Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
  7. London Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
  8. Scotland Adam Cuerden (submissions) has previously been involved with the WikiCup, but hasn't participated for a number of years. He scores mostly from restoration work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.

We say goodbye to eight great participants who did not qualify for the final: Poland Piotrus (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), Michigan Dana boomer (submissions), Prince Edward Island Status (submissions), United States Ed! (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions). Having made it to this stage is still an excellent achievement, and you can leave with your heads held high. We hope to see you all again next year. Signups are now open for the 2014 WikiCup, which will begin on 1 January. All Wikipedians, whatever their interest or level of experience, are warmly invited to participate in next year's competition.

This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.

Finally, the usual notices: If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Keilana, sorry to interrupt your busy life. If you were intending to make a statement at WP:Arbitration/Requests#John_Carter, I think the request phase is going to close soon. The Arbs are asking if there are any more parties that wish to make a statement. Cheers. Ignocrates (talk) 22:40, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Much of the proposed evidence in this case is from years ago and I think your fresh eyes in the mediation process would be an invaluable contribution for the arbitrators to consider. By the way, although I'm aware there was a dispute mediation case, I haven't read over any public portions of it so I don't know anything about your experience of this particular process, positive or negative. I just understand that it is more recent than conversation about this case from 2011! Liz Read! Talk! 18:17, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter[edit]

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

YouTube[edit]

I caught your latest YouTube video. I didn't catch the editor name of the main narrator. It would be nice if you pointed the narrator at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive253#Comments requested before I implement consensus at WP:VisualEditor/Default State RFC and Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 117#VisualEditor now opt-in only for all users on English Wikipedia. His characterization of me as some kind of bad guy that unilaterally turned off a crowning achievement of the WMF both angered and amused me. My act was far from unilateral, as the first link will show. His repetition of James's falsehoods about me implementing something that overloaded WMF's servers showed a certain sloppiness of research, and the second link should show that most people familiar with the situation recognized that James wasn't telling the truth.—Kww(talk) 23:39, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gathering data for Brown wiki event[edit]

Heya - So glad you will be helping out with our event at Brown tomorrow; thank you so much in advance! I haven't had the chance to add all of those WikiProject tags to the women on the to-do list but I will ask folks at the event to add them whenever they go in and make their edits. But I also wanted to ask you: I'm planning on surveying in-person participants using Survey Monkey and was wondering if there's any data that would be helpful for me to collect that you might use for the project you proposed for next year? I know Sarah Stierch has been collecting data on such events, so I will use her last survey as a model. I also definitely still want to chat with you about collaborating on your proposed project, but just wondered if any data from this event -- such as looking at how users continue or don't continue as regular contributors -- might be useful. Anyway, just let me know! Thx Girona7 (talk) 15:45, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Girona7: I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you soon enough with this! If there's still a chance, I would like to look at the participants' contributions over time - retention at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months would be interesting to see. I would also be interested in probing their motivations for contributing. I'll be looking at these metrics specifically for my pilot and it would be great to be able to compare retention from this event to the Loyola events, to see what factors might be affecting retention. We definitely should chat soon - our event got pushed back two weeks because of issues with scheduling and permission and such, so I have a little more lead time. Shoot me an email (keilanawiki@gmail.com) and we can email or Skype or whatever. :) I hope everything went well today - I'm working on a woman scientist today in solidarity. :) All the best, Keilana|Parlez ici 22:51, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Keilana: No worries at all! It's been a slightly hectic few days for all of us, it sounds like ;) Would love to have you take a look at user retention over time, and if there's anything I can do to help with that, just let me know. Right now I'm compiling a list of contributions beyond what folks self-reported. I have all the contributions from in-person participants done and now need to do the remote participants, whom I'm assuming are more likely to be established contributors. Anyway, I'll definitely email you later in the week or this weekend at the latest so we can plan some more Wiki goodness :) Cheers, and thanks again for your contributions for this event! Girona7 (talk) 06:00, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect pages[edit]

Hi, I am leaving this message regarding redirecting precursor mRNA page into primary transcript page. I have discussed this issue with some classmates and professor, and we agreed in suggesting the redirecting since the two terms basically refer to the same concept. Thank you for your time on this comment! Kohw 23:24, 14 October 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kohw (talkcontribs)

@Kohw: Hi! From my knowledge (I'm a sophomore molecular biology student) that seems fine. Do you need help performing the redirect? (Incidentally, I would suggest redirecting the other way around, but I would ask your professor first.) I hope this helps! Keilana|Parlez ici 22:54, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Keilana: Hi! I talked to my professor and she suggesting redirecting precursor mRNA into primary transcript (so merging precursor mRNA page into primary trancript). Would you help in performing the redirect?
@Kohw: Hey, I think it'd be a good skill for you to learn to do it yourself, but I can walk you through. The first thing you need to do is to make sure that all of the information in the precursor mRNA article is in the primary transcript article. You can use an edit summary like "merging info from precursor mRNA". Then you replace the text of the precursor mRNA article with this: #REDIRECT [[primary transcript]]. Does that make sense? Let me know if you need more help! (If I'm not around, feel free to ask at the Teahouse, where you'll get a good answer. Keilana|Parlez ici 23:18, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flow Newsletter[edit]

Hey Keilana. I'm dropping you a note to let you know (or remind you) about Flow, the structured discussion system for Wikipedia that we're building. You may have heard about some of the longer-term vision for Flow in the past, but in the last two months we've been moving quickly to narrow down the short-term scope of the project, and we're keen to get feedback.

First: we've written up an explanation of the "minimum viable product" – the set of features that will be in the first, on-wiki deployment. Because discussions on Wikipedia are complex and varied, we're approaching Flow development as an incremental process of uncovering user needs for different types of discussion. The first release will be limited to a few WikiProject talkpages only, with the goal of testing out our first stab at peer-to-peer discussion functionality and improving it based on feedback from the WikiProject members who use it. If you've got any thoughts on the MVP, or on the philosophy we're trying to follow with this software, let us know on the Flow talkpage. If you know of a WikiProject that might be interested in testing this out, let Maryana know on her talkpage :)

Second: we're having a set of discussions around some experimental features we'll be trying in the first release. These include indenting and nesting of comments and comment editing. If you've got any practical thoughts on these, we'd appreciate hearing them. For background and feedback on the design, there are the ongoing set of design iteration notes, a Design FAQ, and a page for design feedback.

The software prototype is still in early development, and changing daily in small ways, with major goals updating every 2 weeks. If you've got comments about other bits of the software, we'll be holding an IRC office hours session in #wikimedia-office at 18:00 UTC on 17 November to talk about Flow as a whole, and fielding questions on the talkpage before and after then.

Third: this is a pre-newsletter announcement of a new WP:Flow/Newsletter signup page! If you'd like further updates, details, and requests for input, please add your name there.

Thanks, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:00, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Reference Formatting[edit]

Hi Keilana, I am in Dr. Ogg's Molecular Biology class at JHU this semester. You recently reviewed the extrachromosomal DNA page that I am working on for the class project. I know that there are some major issues with the reference section, but I cannot figure out how to fix them. I've been doing different things via trial and error and nothing seems to fix the problem. If I remove the ref tags, then the in-line citations don't seem to work right. I've tried going through and changing the way the citations were written in the text (using an actual citation rather than a named citation) but I still seem to get both the number linked on the ref list AND the citation in the area below. I am really struggling with this fix and would greatly appreciate any advice that you have that can help me correct the situation. Thanks so much! Jfitz1974 (talk) 04:33, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jfitz, I've tweaked the formatting and I think I've got it to what you were intending. Could you check it out and see if I solved it? If you want, I could show you how to make a shortened footnotes list like the one in Barbara McClintock so there's no duplicates. Hope this helps! Wiki redirects[edit]

Hi Keilana, We are working on developing the Homologous chromosome wikipedia page. In our "see also" section we are trying to link to the "Developmental biology" wikipedia article, but it keeps redirecting to the "Developmental biology (journal)" page which says that "Developmental genetics" redirects to the "Developmental biology" page, but it actually links to the "Genesis" page. I've already sorted it out, but should you need to link it again, that's the way to do it. Hope this helps, and good luck with your article! Keilana|Parlez ici 22:58, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:U2 for peer review[edit]

Miss Bono and myself have requested a portal peer review for Portal:U2.
We would appreciate any helpful advice at Wikipedia:Portal peer review/U2/archive1.

I would also like to remind all members of WikiProject U2 (and other interested editors) that U2 Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky (talk · edit · hist) has been put up for peer review (PR) by Dream out loud (t · c) on 10 November 2013; see discussion. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance and happy editing,

Copyvio check[edit]

Student editors of Cotransporter included an entire table list of diseases from a copyrighted web page, here, and I think it constitutes plagiarism, but maybe it's non-copyrightable "data"? It was in the article when you reviewed it, and you didn't flag it, so I thought I'd check with you first. Klortho (talk) 03:48, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Klortho: I assumed it was noncopyrightable data but maybe? Let me ponder it. Keilana|Parlez ici 06:08, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll leave it up to you. I put a question in my comments asking if they'd checked themselves. Klortho (talk) 13:29, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
