MSU Interview

Dear Mr. Z-man,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Is is possible to restore Harrison Ruffin Tyler

The article on this person was deleted in 2008 for not having notoriety for being a living grandson of president tyler. You stated in the talk section that if recent articles were found on this subject that he should be retained. Apparently the world figured this out two weeks ago and there were articles written in the Huffington post, Politoco, New York Times, etc and a CBS Presidents day interview. Hi. :) That's not exactly what I said; i said at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Harrison Ruffin Tyler that the article should be deleted "unless somebody produces evidence that this individual has substantial coverage in reliable secondary sources." It's not really about the sources being recent; it's about them being substantial. If you think that the sources are substantial enough to verify that he meets notability guidelines, then an article on him may well be appropriate. In terms of restoring the old article, it is possible, but you would need to take the request to Wikipedia:Deletion review, which lists among its uses "if significant new information has come to light since a deletion and the information in the deleted article would be useful to write a new article." You might consider speaking to the administrator who deleted the article first. He is not often active these days, but may still be able to return to assist you. Tool peculiarity

Something has happened -- possibly a change in MediaWiki itself, possibly not -- affecting all new pages created after approximately 5 pm on March 19 2012, in terms of how they interact with the PatrolLinks tool you made me.

When I click such links in the unpatrolled queue, the result is "Error: Page deleted", even though the page has not been deleted, nor has it expired from the queue (the only instances when that message should appear). In fact, when I open such an unpatrolled page and click the link at the bottom, patrol is registered as normal; patrol also works normally when I use the "patrol all pages created by user (X)".

And when I reload the queue, the links which had just been marked as "error - deleted" refresh themselves instead of being removed from the list.

If it's March 19-related, it's probably due to the Toolserver's database replication issues. The database is frozen in time currently at March 19, 2012 (there's no newer data available past that date). The replication issue should hopefully be fixed by the end of this week (cf. this mailing list post). --MZMcBride (talk) 17:43, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

closeAFD.js

I've been using your AfD-closing script for awhile, and I think it's a great tool. Thanks for taking the time to create it. I have one suggestion for improvement: Every once in awhile, someone nominates an article for deletion, and the article is moved to a different location during the course of the AfD. In these cases, when the consensus is to delete the article, it's quite easy to simply hit the delete button and move on, not realizing that the script only deleted the redirect and left the main article intact. My suggestion is that the script should check:

• If the user closes the AfD by hitting the "delete" button (or the "delete article" button under "Other"), AND...
• If the target article to be deleted is a redirect, THEN...
• Prompt the user that the target article is a redirect, and ask them if they want to also delete the redirect target.

Edit filter 31

When dealing with this false positive, I saw that it was caused by this change to the filter. This is undoubtedly a false positive - the filter is supposed to stop "ASCII art", and this clearly isn't it. Is there a tool that calculates lists of popular pages in other languages? Translation has begun into our first batch of 10 as per here [3]. As we get a fair number of article done we are going to want to know the sum of the page views in each language. If it is not available now how much work would it require? Pageview stats

Mr. Z-man, I noticed that your "Popular pages lists" tool uses up-to-date pageview data. I was wondering how you derive this data. I'm aware of the hourly stats at dumps.wikimedia.org, but they are so cumbersome. Do you have a way of boiling those files down to monthly pageview stats or something? Or do you just blast stats.grok.se with queries? I'm looking for a relatively fast way to look up weekly or monthly page view stats on the scale of potentially hundreds of thousands of pages. They made monthly files for a while [4], but it's been broken since last August. I just use the hourly files and aggregate the data in a MySQL table. Mr.Z-man 17:12, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Not at the moment, and right now it only includes the articles that are included in the projects signed up (roughly 85% of all articles). It's also not being kept up to date right now. I still haven't added the data for April. The changes that I'm planning on making will include all articles and I'll make the tables public then. I noticed that your bot is doing some work with popularity statistics.

I have always been interested in popularity of the articles I write. Right now I check it manually, like on this page. Would it be possible to create a list or table with popularity statistics (number of views) of all articles I created? If yes, how?

Bug in closeAFD.js?

I am an regular user of your invaluable User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD.js script, but for the first time I have encountered a problem. I closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/My Little Pony: Friendship Gardens as delete with the Delete redirects box checked: the script also deleted User:Ciaran Sinclair/A Canterlot Wedding with edit summary "Deleting redirects to "My Little Pony: Friendship Gardens" after Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/My Little Pony: Friendship Gardens". That page, since restored, was a redirect, but a redirect to a different page, A Canterlot Wedding.

Below the redirect, the page contains contained (it has since been edited to remove it) a lot of text, but no reference to "My Little Pony: Friendship Gardens", however it transcludes the template {{My Little Pony}} which at that time did have a link to the Friendship Gardens page. The only explanation I can think of is that the presence of #REDIRECT at the top of the page and of the link to the deleted page in the template made the script think it was a redirect to the deleted page. ocassional User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD.js bug

I've noticed recently that User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD.js is occasionally not removing the AfD tag from an article after the close. For example Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Leah Kauffman and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Savan Kotecha closed the discussion properly, and tagged the talk page with the template, but failed to remove the in article AfD nomination tag. I'm not sure what the cause is, but it seems to be occurring on average with 1-2 closes per day. Dropping you a note in case someone wants to take a look at the issue. Dead AfD script

Hi Mr Z-man. I've been using your excellent AFD closing script for a while now without any problems - today, however, the usual additions to the drop down menu appear to have vanished when I view an AFD discussion. I can't see any recent changes to the script that would break it, and it still appears to be installed correctly at my vector.js page. Any ideas as to what may have caused this? Hey Mr. Z Still working on getting the popular pages tool into other languages. I may have some programmers who can help. A couple of questions for you. 1) What language is it written in 2) Is it under an open license and would you be willing to allow others to build on it. It's written in Python and is open source. I'm in the [slow] process of rewriting it though as it's not efficient enough to adequately handle the current load though which is why the updating has been erratic the past few months. Bot

The bot reports based on the edit filters using the list here. I've removed the spambot filter from the "immediate" report list as it's getting too many false positives. Mr.Z-man 01:17, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

False positives on Z-bot

Hey, I've just been going through some of the filter logs that have been reported on AIV over the last few days or so. A few of them are not vandalism, but also don't meet the criteria for the filter either. One was a filter to stop editors a) outing people as gay and b) making any derogatory statements about gay people - on an article about buses. The edit was somebody genuinely trying to update an article about buses. It's not the majority of reports but it's sizeable enough that I thought you should know. OK I think I found it from the link to the source code repository on your User page, but it appears to run direct database queries, so unless I have the ability to do direct database queries, it won't be helpful, will it? Zad68 00:52, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I read on your page about the AFD Closing script that there should be a re-list tab, but for some reason when I use the script there is no such tab. I've been trying to do this too... I've got Python bot software working and am trying to get a clone of Z-man's bot set up. If I can make it work then I can hopefully take over these sorts of ad-hoc reporting requests for WP:MED. Zad68 20:59, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

I should hopefully have time to work on it this weekend. The issue isn't the bot part that writes the list pages to the wiki (which will be the same in the new version), but the back-end analysis part that has to read through the hourly pageview logs, condense them into a monthly table (resolving any redirects) and adding the assessment/importance for the associated projects. The current version generates lists of every page associated with a project that has signed up and compares that to the hourly logs, but that has become too slow and resource-consuming (when I started, there were only a few tens of thousands of pages on the list, now there are several million). The new version is just going to compile the data for every page in a "content" namespace (so it doesn't need to spend the time and resources comparing it to a gigantic list) and then generate on-wiki lists for the projects that sign up. The back-end part is written in a combination of Python and C (I'm doing more tasks in C to reduce overhead). The other issue that sort of affects most bots/scripts is the ambiguity over the future of the Toolserver. Some people think that Wikimedia Labs will eventually supersede it and that once that is done, WM-DE and WMF will phase out support for the TS. Others seem to think that the planned architecture of Labs means it will never have the capabilities to replace the TS - [5]. Mr.Z-man 21:18, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Toolserver/Google Maps firewall problems

Hi there. I'm still using the missing image tool albeit mostly working my way through a backlog of offline copies. Something that's been broken for a while is you can no longer click on the kmz link to bring it up on Google Maps. The kmz file itself is OK - you can download it, ftp it up to one's own website and point Google at that, it works fine. So it's obviously something permissions-related on the toolserver that's blocking Google accessing the kmz directly - is this fixable or above your pay grade? Cheers. Should be fixed now. I think it was an http vs https issue. Some browsers didn't like loading the unsecured kml file on the https version of Google Maps. I also upgraded the jquery library it uses. Yes thanks, we're good now - what was the problem? One other thing which isn't urgent but is a mildly annoying bug : when it's failed to derive the starting coordinates from an article name, the "Submit" button is permanently disabled until one reloads the page. It'd be nice if the button was enabled again once one started typing in the location box. Like I say it's not a biggy, just mildly annoying when you enter an article name which turns out to be a dab page (eg Windsor) and you've changed a lot of the options that need to be redone if you reload. What's the lag for popularity ratings?

Sorry, I meant the list of articles in each project is generated in the first half of the month (early April). Then it takes until around the end of the month (May 5) to process the data, and then the states are recorded on each project page. Mr.Z-man 12:30, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

refToolbar

The ref toolbar is amazing. There are however issues with reliability from time to time. Some time it does not work and I go back to using diberri's tool [6]. Anything we can do to help keep it working always? Also sometimes it adds a space before the ref begins. Anyway to get rid of this extra space? Can send screen shots if you need. Popular pages - please can you make an exception?

I was wondering if you could make an exception to your moritorium on adding new wikiprojects to your bot's "popular pages" runs? I have been involved in a GLAM project with the State Library of New South Wales (Wikipedia:GLAM/SLNSW), and they are doing some fantastic work. They are really interested in using metrics over the next couple of months to target articles within their institutional remit (New South Wales), so would really appreciate a localized version of Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/Popular pages. The relevant wikiproject is Wikipedia:WikiProject New South Wales, and it looks like it's set up normally so shouldn't be unusually difficult. It is something that I am still working on. I've gotten caught up with the old data and done some more work on the new program. I should be ready to start testing it soon, at least for English. As far as adapting it for other languages, if they use enwiki-style projects, those will be easiest. But it's more "modular" than the current program, so would be adaptable for others as well.

Since the majority of the NSW articles should already be included under the Australia project and it's only 6500 pages total, it shouldn't cause any problems to add that. Since August is already done, the new data won't be available until early next month. Mr.Z-man 17:25, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

UBLPs again

Hi, I thought your bot could work out that articles like this actually have references. If it can't I think that it shouldn't run until it can detect when it is the "unreferenced" tag that is wrong, not just assume that it's missing the "BLP" part. I think this was brought up a long time ago and the conclusion was that it is impossible for a bot to detect whether something is really a "reference." You can have links and things in ref tags that aren't valid references, and things that aren't links and aren't in ref tags that are valid. Considering that the majority of the tag changes are correct and these changes aren't really negative, I would hardly call the entire task useless. Mr.Z-man 16:37, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

If identification of refs is too hard for a bot then it should only generate a list of "possibly unreferenced articles about possibly living people not tagged with BLP unreferenced", and leave the. tag changing to humans. Unless the subject of the article isn't also alive, it's not making it any more wrong. I still don't see the harm. I don't feel like looking through 20,000 edits to verify, so I just picked 5 random ones out of the ones it did the other day:

• Sid Makkar - correct
• Santiago Nazarian - correct
• Fulgencio Obelmejias - basically correct (the link verifies some of the content in the table, but little else)
• Amrapali Dubey - correct
• Mark R. Cohen - correct-ish (the only sort-of reference was a dead link)

Generating a list is basically just turning 1 backlog into 2. Now instead of having people source or tag for deletion, they'll also have to go through a list just to see whether the tag needs to be changed and remove the tag if it's wrong, something that they would do anyways without the extra list. It's essentially the same amount of work for users, probably slightly more. The only "benefit" would be saving a few edits. Mr.Z-man 03:26, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Criteria R2 is for a redirect between namespaces, like between an article and a userpage. I note that in your earlier request for deletion you said that it can be made into a stub. If you want to do that, you can simply overwrite the redirect, there is no need to delete it first. In the meantime, it should be maintained as a redirect to the most relevant page. Can you please provide backup for your comment "csd previously declined"? The article was previously speedily deleted and WP:SALTed based on CSD G4 guidelines on April 28, 2009, after discussion in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jeopardy! set evolution (3rd nomination). No, it was after a request at RFPP actually. The edits of the IP correspond with similar edits to the same article Amherst Cove by 2 new accounts around the same time. High Court (disambiguation)

Can you restore or userfy High Court (disambiguation) for me? From search, it appears it was a redirect to List of national supreme courts, probably as a result of a flawed merge. There is an article High Court which is just a list, but the page history shows that it started out as a disambiguation. High Court probably should not be merged to List of national supreme courts because some high courts are not national supreme courts – they are lower level courts. I'm on the fence over whether High Court should remain a list or be converted back to a dab. As a list it has an odd hatnote, and it's also odd to have a long list of "high courts" when we have no high court article. Actually the title High Court worked when it was a dab, but should be high court if it's about a generic type of court. Do you have an opinion on that? There's not really any significant history worth restoring. It was a redirect to High Court, then it was a redirect to List of national supreme courts, then back to High Court. It never had any real content and has no incoming links. The issue is not whether he exists or whether he actually appeared in movies, the issue was whether he was notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. That generally requires significant coverage of the topic in multiple reliable sources.

• [10], [11] [12] [13] [14], [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24], are about movies, only mention that he played a role, and barely discuss him at all outside the context of his character, many don't even do that and only list him as a supporting actor. They definitely do not pass the threshold of "significant coverage." Some are also blogs or other types of unreliable sources.
• [25] [26] [27] [28] are basically just lists of what movies he was in with little to no additional discussion. Anyone who has ever had a named credit in a movie or TV show can get their name on sites like these. And these types of sites are usually user-edited, so they are not considered reliable sources.
• [29] might qualify in that it actually says more than characters he has played, but the coverage is still pretty minimal. It was also in the article when it was being discussed, so other users apparently didn't consider it sufficient.
• [30] is the only link that's actually about him

But I'm not going to overturn a deletion discussion on my own because of a 4 question interview for a magazine. You can open a new discussion here, but if you want a chance, do not just paste a big list of links. You need to find articles like [31] that are actually about him, not about movies he appeared in. AfD closing script

Hi Mr.Z-man, as you'll probably see I've closed the RFC regarding PRODs and deletion without prejudice (soft deletion). Part of the successful outcome is that WP:Soft deletion in endorsed as the procedural outcome for AfDs with no comment other than the nominator's.
